Coconut Coated Prawn Skewers, made by Pacific West Foods, were crowned Foodservice Product of the Year at the prestigious 2016 BFFF Annual Awards (9 June).

Organised by the British Frozen Food Federation, the glittering awards were the highlight of the trade association’s annual gala dinner dance at the London Hilton on Park Lane hotel. Sponsored by NewCold, an integrated service provider for cold chain logistics, the awards are recognised as the frozen industry’s top accolade.

The prawn dish beat six other gold award winners to claim the overall top spot. Gold winners included Bidvest Foodservice, which claimed two golds in the Best Bakery and Best Desserts categories and Newberry International Produce, Oliver James Foods, KK Fine Foods and Bar Foods.

The Frozen Food Awards are well respected throughout the catering industry as all of the entries are judged by representatives of the prestigious Craft Guild of Chefs.

Commenting on the Product of the Year one judge said: “The coconut flavour was intense and enjoyable. I loved the crisp coating.”

Commenting on the awards, Brian Young, BFFF chief executive said: “Our experts from the Craft Guild of Chefs simply loved this product.

“All of the finalists should be rightly proud of their achievement. This year we have had a record number of entries. The quality of products submitted for judging has been outstanding and once again, demonstrates the on-going innovation and creativity of frozen food producers.

He added: “Caterers continue to recognise that frozen food is nutritious and tasty as well as providing value for money, minimal waste and convenience.”

Editors Notes:

The winners in the foodservice sector are judged by representatives of the Craft Guild of Chefs, who, as executive chefs, catering managers and recipe developers, are expert in their field and uncompromising in their assessments of the entries. They are always impressed by products that take the labour out of prestigious dishes which normally require intensive preparation in the kitchen. In the foodservice sector, frozen foods, with their established logistical benefits, have gained still higher acceptance through clever innovative ideas in both recipe formulation and preparation functionality as well as product sector insight. Backed by a deep understanding of the catering market, frozen foods continue to make significant progress in the foodservice sector as end users demand enhanced quality, recipe authenticity and significant labour-savings in the kitchen.

This year is the 29th year of the BFFF Awards which started in 1988.
