In our other guidance we have mentioned that HSE have allowed the temporary use FFP2 masks for food ingredients over the FFP3 which the HSE usually specifies (subject to additional measure being adopted) see link below. https://bfff.co.uk/options-for-using-ppe-with-an-apf-of-10/
In this guidance we would like to make you aware of alternative reference numbers to use and the ones to avoid when looking to procure equivalent FFP2 masks for protection in the food industry against harmful ingredient dusts. The FFP2 code refers to the EU/UK standard, defined as Filtering Face Piece FF for particulate P, the number 2 relates to medium efficiency or the number the 3 relates to high efficiency.
When trying to source FFP2 masks there is also an option to procure the US standard N95
It is widely accepted by industry that the N95 (USA Code) although tested against different standards are broadly equivalent to a FFP2. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) references a 3M technical bulletin ‘Comparison of FFP2 and N95 and other filtering facepiece respirator classes which suggests that it is reasonable to consider N95 and FFP2 masks as being equivalent for filtering non-oil-based articles.
It is IMPORTANT to note that the China KN95 or Korea KF95 versions/codes are not equivalent to FFP2 standards and should not be used. Counterfeiting of personal protective equipment is also an issue so its recommended that equipment is purchased through a reputable supplier.
