Following the Prime Ministers statement of 31st July, guidance on shielding and protecting people defined on medical grounds as extremely vulnerable has now been updated to include information related to the pausing of shielding.
Those who are clinically extremely vulnerable were previously advised to ‘shield’ during the peak of the pandemic in England. However, the government is now advising that they do not need to shield at present. This is because the rates of transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the community have fallen significantly.
Note: Those affected could be advised to shield again if the situation changes and there is an increase in the transmission of COVID-19 in the community. Names will be kept securely on the shielded patient list by NHS Digital and they will be informed if the advice changes. Any national changes will be reflected in the guidance.
