Demand for Lactose Free on the Rise
Research has revealed that 72% of people would like to see more lactose-free options on menus when eating out* and with Allergy UK estimating one in five have a lactose intolerance, operators who look to cater for these dairy avoiders could boost profits.
With the inability to digest lactose the most common cause of dairy intolerances, the state-of-the-nation research completed by Swedish bakery Almondy, reported that over a third of people have bought a lactose-free product, rising to 40% of men*. Plus with a growing number of people opting for free-from products for lifestyle reasons, there’s never been a better time for operators to look at how they can make menus lactose-free friendly.
Andrew Ely, Managing Director, Almondy explains;
“We’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to lactose-free; commercially it offers a huge untapped opportunity for operators, not only in catering for the 20% of people who have the intolerance but appealing to the growing number of consumers buying free-from.
“It’s clear from the research that the demand for lactose-free is there, seven out of ten want more options* and operators seen to react will stand to profit.”
With dessert menus often limited, providing a free-from option that ticks all the boxes can be a challenge. The Swedish cake supplier who has built an army of fans thanks to its gluten-free confectionery inspired range – which includes Daim Cake – recently launched a Creamy Chocolate Cake with Roasted Almonds that is both gluten and lactose-free.
Andrew adds; “Operators keen to get a slice of the growing lactose-free market – as well as the already established gluten-free market – should look no further than Almondy. Our bakery has spent three decades building its reputation for high quality, delicious gluten-free cakes, which is why the new lactose-free cake had to be absolutely right.
“We’re confident customers won’t be able to resist the cake’s rich chocolate cream and roasted almonds, but most significantly it really will remove the headache of multiple free-from dessert options and simplify a catering operation.”
Almondy’ Creamy Chocolate Cake with Roasted Almonds is available frozen and pre-cut into 12 slices for convenience and accurate portion control, with each slice taking just 20 minutes to defrost. It has a frozen shelf life of 18 months and a chilled shelf life once thawed of up to seven days.
Almondy’s latest lactose-free dessert joins its classic gluten-free almond cakes which feature confectionery favourites Toblerone and Daim, as well as a Peanut & Caramel version.
