The BFFF Health and Safety Conference
Welcome to the virtual BFFF Health and Conference, sponsored by ARCO the experts in safety, 25th February 2021
Just over 11 years ago the Federation launched its very first Health & Safety Conference, since then we have gained quite a following from health & safety professionals to company directors, managers and maintenance teams.
In conjunction with the BFFF Health & Safety Expert Group, we have put together another strong programme based on previous feedback and current topics where we have endeavoured to address industry issues with 3 modules, hot topics, innovation, and a general session.
Hot topics: Matt Birtles joins us from the HSE science division to explain the new management tool to help companies control MSD’s. We then have our sponsor speaker Arco covering both slip resistance and footwear. Ruth Poulten of NFU Mutual will cover modern slavery labour exploitation is now the second most common form of modern slavery in the UK. Ruth will interview Shayne Tyler from the Fresca Group. Shayne has been on the receiving end of trafficker threats after exposing slavery in his factory 10 years ago and is a recognised industry leader in the fight against this crime. In addition, Ruth will interview Dr Alastair Redfern, Chair of Clewer Initiative. Alastair was instrumental in creating the draft Modern Slavery Bill, launched in 2014, and will show how COVID and Brexit are creating new dangers which could have a serious impact on modern slavery in the UK.
In the innovation module we explore textbook examples of how the use of technology can deliver good practice and continuous improvement within our industry. Paul Duncalf from Brakes takes us through a series of vehicle innovations implemented within the company, with the aim of preventing accident reoccurrence. Daniel Bowles from Finsbury Foods and Julian Taylor from SHE Software will join us to explain how software has been successfully integrated into managing Health & Safety in the workplace. In the final session Milly Wallace of Safety Culture shows us how the EddApp can be used to deliver on the job training courses to employees via smart phone applications.
In our general module, Terry Mallard from Birmingham EHO will take us on a journey through his Black museum of enforcement stories. Glenn Woolley of NFU Mutual outlines how Composite Insulated Panels; extensively used across the frozen sector and wider food and drink industry can be managed effectively, and finally our Keynote Speaker for the day Dr Shaun Lundy, Director of Tetra Consulting, will take us through the challenges, including those caused by Covid-19, faced by Health and Safety Practitioners. Sometimes Health and Safety is often incorrectly used as a convenient excuse to stop what are essentially sensible activities going ahead. The Health and Safety Executive set up an independent panel – the Myth Busters Challenge Panel, to scrutinize such decisions and Shaun also sits on this panel.
