  • Workplace transport is still one of the highest cause of fatality in the workplace, this talk by Mentor Training will look at aspects of materials handling equipment (MHE) often overlooked,
  • Manual Handling & Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) are still above average in the food industry, the HSE policy team will provide the latest updates,

Pallet Truck Safety - Challanging Common Myths
Andy will challenge common misconceptions regarding the use of pallet trucks. Often downplayed as lower risk than popular rider-operated counterbalance and reach trucks, he will explain why pallet truck safety deserves your attention, with unsafe use posing serious risks to your team and the productivity of your operations.
Since serving with the British Army, Andy has gained 30+ years’ experience as a qualified Instructor, specialising in workplace transport, and is Mentor’s Technical Manager. In this role, he develops training courses, advises on regulatory updates and helps customers identify training solutions.
Andy is Vice Chairman of AITT and sits on their standards committee. He represents AITT on the ABA, which sets UK testing standards and categorisation for forklift operation, and is used by the HSE as an expert witness on forklift accidents. He is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH, a Member of the IIAI and a Fellow of IIRSM.
The good the bad and the ugly of leadership
This presentation entitled ‘the Good the Bad and the Ugly of leadership’ will take attendees through several case studies of how leadership and culture plays a crucial part in many situations resulting in both positive and negative outcomes.
It will be easy for those attending to identify how good leadership traits can be harnessed in their own organisations. Simon shares these experiences gained over the years from factual accident investigations and observations.
Simon is the director and principal consultant at Hallam Safety Ltd, he has worked in the Health & Safety profession since 1999. Previous roles include Senior HSEQ Manager for a FSTE 250 and later H&S Director. Simon actively works with clients in the food & drink, motor, plant and tool hire and logistic industries. Simon also works with the British Frozen Food Federation and its members as Head of Health & Safety.
In 2005, following the introduction of the Work at Height Regulations, he successfully advocated the retrofitting side handrails to a company operating the largest fleet of LGV’s in the UK, this collective fall prevention can now be seen fitted to vehicle fleets across the UK.
In 2009, Simon became a Chartered Member of IOSH and also gained other qualifications for fire and training. Hallam Safety deliver many of the IOSH Accredited courses such as Managing Safely and Leading Safely.
Accident Investigations
During accident investigations, it’s crucial to consider various factors that can significantly impact the cost and outcome of a civil claim in the future. Understanding these aspects can be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of the case
I have over a decade of experience in corporate claims, specializing in liability claims, particularly within the food production and retail industries. My background includes leading liability and motor teams, as well as overseeing a Large Loss function at NFUM. Currently, I am responsible for heading a team that manages relationships with NFUM’s large corporate clients from a claims perspective.”

He is the Official Starter (first tee announcer) for golf’s Open championship. David and his team very much occupy the higher end of the market for business communication and presentation coaching, designing and delivering bespoke training courses for individuals or groups. They cover every aspect of presentation in its widest sense; daily interaction between individuals or speaking at meetings, through to fullblown staged performances to large audiences.
David is the author of the top-rated book, “Help With High Impact Presentations” which is available on Amazon.
Legal Update
This session will provide a practical and informative update on all the changes and recent developments that health and safety professionals and business owners need to be aware of.
Louise is a Legal Director and solicitor-advocate in the Litigation, Advisory & Regulatory team. She specialises in health and safety and criminal regulatory law and advises on a wide range of regulatory legal issues including health and safety, building safety, fire safety, product liability, food safety, white collar crime, contentious environmental and transport law. She represents clients (both companies and individuals/directors) at inquests, PACE interviews and in relation to prosecutions. She also provides clients with advice on a wide variety of regulatory issues and carries out a large amount of training for them. She has a masters’ degree in Health, Safety and Environmental Law and is ranked in the legal directories for health and safety work as a next generation partner.
A different kind of 10K, my journey there
Craig will identify some of the key challenges along his journey towards achieving his first 10K. In addition, he will explain why the journey will never end.
Craig Foyle is a Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH), and a Member of the Institute of Directors (MIoD). He has over twenty-five years of experience in occupational safety and health (OSH) and specialises in in project safety management, training and development, and consultancy (compliance/management systems), providing support for clients internationally.
A keen volunteer with IOSH, he is currently a committee member of the Food & Drink Industries Group, a Peer Review Interview Chair, and Representative on the HSE Food & Drink Manufacturing Forum. In August 2022 Craig became an Ambassador for the Institute of Directors in East Yorkshire.

HSE MSD Risk Assessment Tools and taking a Proactive Approach
The presentation will cover, a few statistics, a step by step approach to managing MSD risk, what tools we have now, and for the ‘proactive’ approach - the Body Mapping Tool and why it is good for businesses to proactively check for MSD signs and symptoms.
David Butter is the Head of Manufacturing Sector Team for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). He has over 33 years of experience in frontline regulator and policy roles across many industries.
