An ambitious initiative to launch a mobile, multi-purpose community hub on a North Yorkshire heritage railway has attracted significant funding enabling a launch date to be set for this Summer.

The Leeming Bar Residents’ Association (LBRA), which is carrying out the project, has attracted funding from the National Lottery as well as support from ice cream manufacturer Froneri and food group ABP Wessex.

Volunteers from LBRA are busy converting a 1961 British Rail carriage into the hub which could be used for a wide range of activities such as cookery demonstrations and meetings or be turned into a mini-cinema, café, youth centre or mini-library.

Charlotte Hambling, head of marketing at Froneri UK , added: “We are delighted to support this project which will provide communities and groups along the 22-mile route with a very valuable resource.  I am confident the many hours spent on converting the carriage will be amply rewarded.”
