As of 1 January 2023, sesame officially became the ninth major allergen on the list in the US and will now be subject to the same labelling and manufacturing requirements as other major food allergens identified by the Food Allergen Labelling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004. The other major allergens within the act include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.
Any food that is already in circulation before 2023 doesn’t need to be removed from shelves, or relabelled to declare sesame as an allergen.
More than 1.6 million people in the US are allergic to sesame and cases of sesame allergy have been rising in recent years, along with a growing number of foods that contain the ingredient.
