In order to limit global warming we need to halve global greenhouse emissions by the end of this decade. Given that global GHG emissions have increased by about 0.9% a year since 2010, this will be a pretty significant reversal.
In 2019, the UK made a commitment to be Net Zero by 2050. Becoming net zero involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions and balancing any remaining emissions by enhancing carbon sinks which remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With less than 30 years for this commitment to become a reality, fundamental changes are required by all organisations in the UK to play their part and reduce their impact on the planet. With investor pressure, a looming UK target and market momentum, becoming net zero is high on many businesses’ agendas.
Every company now needs a strategy to reach net zero by 2050, and responsible businesses need to get there sooner. Businesses will be committing to only working with companies that have a credible net zero strategy, and consumers will be choosing products that do not contribute to the climate crisis. If you do not prepare your business for these new requirements, you will lose out to your competitors.
