We have just released new guidance on Emergency Arrangements and Treatment in the event of Eye Exposure to Ammonia (Including those wearing contact lenses). The guidance has been assured by its Primary Authority Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, this giving it legal standing which is paramount when introducing new industry guidance.
Simon Brentnall Head of Health & Safety at BFFF states;
‘This topic was raised by one of our member companies, on further investigation we identified that companies do not always consider eye protection and first aid treatment in their risk assessments when it comes to contact lenses wearers. Employees and contractors working on ammonia refrigeration systems are at risk of injury and those wearing contact lenses even more so. In the event of exposure to ammonia, contact lenses would need to be removed quickly in order to minimise the risk of serious eye injury and therefore giving the best chance of effective medical treatment. For those working on Ammonia refrigeration systems it is critical that treatment and emergency arrangements are considered’
