Brakes, the nation’s leading foodservice wholesaler, has reaffirmed its commitment to developing future culinary talent by continuing its partnership with Compass Group UK & Ireland for its Junior Chef Academy (JCA).
Since partnering with Compass on the programme since 2021, Brakes’ support has played a pivotal role in enabling the Academy to grow into a national early‑careers initiative that inspires young people to explore hospitality careers and develop essential life skills.
Aimed at children aged between 14 and 16 years old, the initiative is not just about teaching cooking techniques, but also helps build confidence, foster creativity, and inspires the next generation of culinary talent. The 10-week programme helps aspiring junior chefs embark on a transformative culinary journey, honing their skills in mastering fundamental culinary techniques, plus crafting and creating a diverse range of delicious dishes.
To date, 23 Junior Chef Academy programmes have been delivered across 10 regions, working in partnership with 11 colleges. The programme has already supported over 300 young people, providing hands‑on culinary training, mentoring from Compass chefs, and a structured pathway into further education and apprenticeships. So far, 11 students have progressed into Compass apprenticeships, demonstrating the Academy’s growing impact on the future chef pipeline. The two organisations have plans to significantly expand the initiative to over 1,500 students in the next 2-3 years.
Brakes’ sponsorship ensures every participant receives chef jackets, equipment and ingredients at no cost, removing financial barriers for young people – particularly those in left behind regions where access to enrichment opportunities can be limited.
