French supermarket cyber attack highlights UK food security risks

The appalling cyber attack that raised refrigerator temperatures in French supermarkets should serve as a wake-up call for the UK food industry, highlighting the need to strengthen the resilience of the infrastructure on which our food supply depends.

Reportedly, the legacy systems targeted in the attack were no longer receiving security updates. The incident raises serious questions about the security of equipment used in critical infrastructure, and whether manufacturers should be required to provide security support throughout its operational life.

The cold chain plays a vital role in delivering a reliable and efficient food supply, and maintaining food safety standards. Frozen food is particularly important, extending shelf life from days to months and giving businesses and consumers greater flexibility when supply chains come under pressure.

Unfortunately, the risk of disruptions is growing as geopolitical instability, extreme weather, energy price shocks – as well as cyber attacks – place increasing pressure on food production and distribution.

The downgrading of the Government’s food and farming portfolio to a junior ministerial post also raises concerns about whether food security is receiving the attention it deserves.

The British Frozen Food Federation believes the UK needs a comprehensive audit of its cold-chain infrastructure, examining capacity, contingency arrangements, backup power and the ability to maintain supplies during major disruption.

Government and industry must work together to identify vulnerabilities, strengthen safeguards and prepare for unexpected events. Manufacturers also have a clear responsibility to ensure that equipment used in critical infrastructure remains secure throughout its operational life.

Food security is fundamental to national resilience. While the next crisis may be difficult to predict, practical steps taken now can help reduce its impact and protect the UK’s ability to maintain a reliable food supply.
