FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS CONFERENCE EXHIBITOR SPOTLIGHT: AAK FOODS

AAK Foods are confirmed to exhibit at this year’s Frozen Food Business Conference at the Stratford Manor Hotel.

“Everything we do is about Making Better Happen™.

AAK specializes in plant-based oils that are the value-adding ingredients in many of the products people love to consume. We make these products better tasting, healthier, and more sustainable. We enhance their sensory experience – by giving the silkier mouthfeel in premium chocolate, the juicier texture in a plant-based burger, and the puffier appearance in a lower-fat pastry. We can also optimize their production by substituting existing ingredients with plant-based equivalents that give better efficiency. AAK’s value-adding solutions enable our customers to be successful in a better way.

Listed on Nasdaq Stockholm and with our headquarters in Malmö, Sweden, AAK has been Making Better Happen™ for more than 150 years.

At the heart of AAK’s offer is Customer Co-Development, combining our desire to understand what better means for each customer, with the unique flexibility of our production assets, and a deep knowledge of many products and industries, including Chocolate & Confectionery, Bakery, Dairy, Plant-based Foods, Special Nutrition, Foodservice and Personal Care. Our 4,000 employees support our close collaboration with customers through 25 regional sales offices, 15 dedicated Customer Innovation Centers, and with the support of more than 20 production facilities.

This will be our first conference and we are really looking forward to networking within this community, hearing from inspirational speakers and understanding a little more about the role AAK can play in supporting our fellow members.

Attendees that are focussing on healthier reformulations, going vegan or reducing their ingredient cost base should pop by the AAK stand to discuss their challenges with our team. We will also be sampling our delicious vegan fudge made with our plant-based butter alternative, which is suitable for use wherever butter is currently used. Talk to us about lower carbon & energy cost ingredient solutions.”

CELEBRATING 34 YEARS OF PARAMOUNT

This month it’s our 34th birthday; find out what’s new at Paramount this year, from sustainability and community support to our latest product awards.

Paramount started with an investment of £3,500, second-hand machinery, determination, and a lot of faith! We now supply a range of innovative vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and seafood products across the globe.

Sustainability and community support have always been at the heart of what we do. But, this year, these have been more important than ever.

2022 marks our first year as an accredited Living Wage employer, committing to paying all staff the real Living Wage. This is a voluntary rate, the only rate based on the real cost of living.

This year Paramount has also been working with FareShare to reduce food waste and fight hunger. FareShare is a charity that redistributes surplus food to charities and community groups across the UK. So far we have donated over 19,000 meals, reaching over 800 charities.

As well as helping to reduce food waste, donating surplus products can also have a positive environmental impact. Paramount’s donated meals saved over 12 tonnes of C02e and over 120 million litres of water from going to waste.*

Over the year, we’ve also celebrated a Gold Taste of the West award for our new vegan Pea & Mint Fritters, Silver for our new vegetarian Mozzarella Bites, as well as our MSC Smoked Haddock & Mozzarella Fishcakes, and a Highly Commended for our Butternut, Goat’s Cheese & Beet Burger.

Despite the challenging times, we’re excited about the year to come, and building on the recipe we’ve created for success.

For more information on Paramount products, to request a call from our sales team or any other enquiries, get in touch at info@paramount21.co.uk.

OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL APPOINTS OAKRA DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Oakland International has appointed Adam Turner as OakRA Development Manager, to support their unique reusable packaging solution.

Joining Oakland as a line operative in 2019 before early promotion to line leader and then supervisor, Adam brings with him an enquiring mind with a rounded skill base, a comprehensive understanding of the direct-to-consumer (D2C) market as well as a flexible approach to the role which encompasses product development, scientific testing, researching and IT development amongst its many elements.

Said Adam: “I feel excited to be involved in such an important business venture within Oakland, helping to develop OakRA as the environmentally sustainable food packaging solution for the industry.

“Going forward my focus will be on continuing to expand my sector knowledge whilst helping to develop the full OakRA concept from the product through to the operational processes and turnaround systems. I am thankful to Oakland for this opportunity at such an early stage in my career.”

Invented out of the necessity to reduce waste packaging, OakRA provides a fully reusable alternative to traditional cardboard and is set to disrupt traditional transit processes and lead the way in hardwearing reusable packaging development.

Congratulating Adam on his appointment, Oakland International Group Innovation Officer, Lindsay Winser, said: “I am delighted to have Adam on board, his passion and commitment to the project are evident and he is a great asset to OakRA, our ground-breaking sustainable packaging solution.”

GOVERNMENT CONFIRM DELAY OF OCTOBER 1ST DEADLINE FOR FOOD LABELLING RULES

The UK Government has announced a delay to remaining import controls on EU goods entering Great Britain, in recognition of the significant supply chain impact due to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and the recent rise in global energy costs. The Government has concluded that in this context it would be wrong to impose new administrative requirements on businesses who may pass-on the associated costs to consumers already facing pressures on their finances.

In line with protecting consumers from unnecessary costs, the food labelling rules that apply from the 1st October, 2022 will now come into force on the 1st January, 2024.

In general, delaying these labelling requirements will mean that some labelling terms and EU addresses (in relation to the importer or FBO address requirement) will continue to be permitted on the GB market for an additional 15 months. To further help UK businesses it has also been decided to further extend the deadline to use “UK/EC” identification marks on the GB Market to 1st January 2024.

Following decisions in Wales and Scotland these changes will apply across the whole of GB.

A list of affected products is below. More detailed guidance around this will be published in the coming weeks but you can read the full announcement here

PRIMARY AUTHORITY, SHOULD YOU JOIN?

Just a reminder to all BFFF members, that along with our other partnerships, BFFF has developed a series of co-ordinated Primary Authority partnerships with a number of different regulatory authorities. These include Cambridgeshire County Council Trading Standards from 2014, South Cambridgeshire District Council Environmental Health from 2015, Wakefield Council Environmental Health from 2016 and Essex Fire & Rescue Services from 2020 to create a dedicated legal resource base to meet the needs of our members.

Primary Authority is a means for businesses to receive assured and tailored advice on meeting environmental health, trading standards, health and safety or fire safety regulations through a single point of contact. This enables all businesses in the coordinated partnership to invest with confidence in products, practices, and procedures, knowing that the resources they devote to compliance are well spent.

Primary Authority is based on legal partnerships between businesses and individual local authorities.

Advice is provided to you via BFFF which has been tailored to our members general needs. This advice can be found on our website here.

Primary authorities provide advice to businesses that other local regulators must respect on compliance with the regulations. They can also produce an inspection plan for a business or the members of a trade association to improve the effectiveness of visits by local regulators and underpin better sharing of information.

The benefits to the business are:

  • access to relevant, authoritative tailored advice
  • gain recognition of robust compliance arrangements
  • draw on an established and effective means of meeting business regulations
  • be more confident they are protecting yourselves and your customers

Its costs nothing to sign up through the coordinated partnership

If you have any questions, please contact Holly (hollyjones@bfff.co.uk)
