NewCold brings Innovative Solution to the Cold Chain

NewCold, the deep-frozen storage and logistics specialists, have recently introduced a fully-automated handling solution which, says the company, sets new standards in maintaining temperature integrity and efficiency in the cold chain.

Designed in close partnership with Gray and Adams and produced at the trailer builder’s Doncaster manufacturing facility, the aptly-named ‘Pod’ draws on the latest automated loading technology and according to NewCold is a first for the UK.

The Pod’s key function is to bridge the gap between the deep-frozen production or storage environment and NewCold’s auto-loading 44-pallet double-deck trailers – also designed and manufactured by Gray and Adams.

For example, as soon as the product leaves the production line at minus 22 degrees, it is automatically loaded through a sliding door at the back of the 60-pallet-capacity Pod, which itself is pre-cooled to the same temperature. From here, following a brief temperature-stabilising period the pallets are automatically transferred into the double-deck trailer, docked to the front of the Pod.

Initial loading into the Pod is completed in around 5 minutes, with the whole cycle taking less than 30 minutes. Meanwhile, 3 x Carrier TRS refrigeration systems hold the temperature at a constant minus 25 degrees and being electric, keep harmful emissions to a minimum.

Effectively, every deep-frozen package or pallet remains at a constant set temperature of minus 22 – minus 25 degrees, and at no time during its journey from the production line to completed loading in the trailer is any pallet exposed to the ambient environment or touched by an operative. This not only ensures absolute temperature integrity but virtually eliminates product damage.

Newcold’s Logistics Advisor Tom Cassells sees a key role for the Pod going forward:

“Automated handling and loading are bringing a host of benefits to the deep-frozen supply chain and this new advancement represents a big step forward for NewCold and their customers – in terms of energy saving, faster turn-round and overall product quality.”

The Pod recently won an Innovation Award for Gray and Adams at the annual TCS&D dinner, which was attended by operators and suppliers to the temperature-controlled storage and distribution industry.

NewCold Advanced Cold Logistics added a final phase to their Wakefield plant in the spring of 2018. Now considered to be the UK’s largest facility of its kind and with around £100m so far committed, the facility handles 3,000,000 pallets annually.  Plus, with a total volume of over 4 million cubic metres, it has the capacity to store 143,000 pallets – at a constant, minus 23 degrees. So successful has business been for the company that they are actively seeking a second UK site.

Independent national delivered wholesale company Creed Foodservice has unveiled its Christmas and New Year 2019 product guide

Creed Christmas 2019 features many new products with an increased focus on vegan and vegetarian eating, as well as grab and go options for extending catering throughout the festive season and easy serving suggestions from Creed Foodservice’s Executive Business Development Chef, Rob Owen. There are options available for all Christmas catering opportunities from buffets and grab & go to the ‘main event’.

While consumers still enjoy traditional Christmas food, they are looking for new takes on familiar foods. From Creed Family Butchers there are fresh whole turkeys and turkey crowns available of course, as well as a Turkey Butterfly Lobe which makes large numbers of Christmas lunches easy to carve and serve with minimum wastage. Creed is also offering a range of turkey alternatives from fully cooked Belly Pork portions to Rib of Beef.

When it comes to desserts, although classic Christmas pudding is still popular, consumers are looking for different treats too. This year Creed is offering tempting desserts such as bang on trend gluten free Raspberry Gin Cheesecake, retro-feel Black Forest Roulade, Amaretti & Pistachio Tiffin or Baked Belgian Chocolate Espresso Tart. Many desserts are also vegan-friendly and gluten-free such as the Pumpkin Cheesecake.

According to Kantar, 1 in 12 consumers are now looking to enjoy a meat-free Christmas and this year Creed is offering vegan and vegetarian canapé and buffet products, starters, main course and puddings. New for this year is gluten free Squash, Brie, Beetroot and Truffle Oil Infused Tart, Cajun Spice Sweet Potato Roulade and some delicious vegan puddings including Christmas Pudding Pie and Billionaire Bar, a rich and indulgent chocolate dessert.

Festive themed grab and go items mean that caterers in all foodservice channels can offer portable dishes and snacks full of the flavours of Christmas, so maximising sales uptake of Christmas and New Year fare throughout December.

As well as tempting foods, Creed has expanded its drinks offering for this year too, with more non-alcoholic options available such as Belvoir Mulled Winter Punch or Luscombe  Wild Elderflower Bubbly, to appeal to the 20% of the population who now claim to be teetotal.

apetito, the UK’s leading creator and supplier of meals for the health and social care sector, was yesterday presented with its Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development, by Mrs Sarah Troughton, The Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire.

This award recognises apetito’s commitment to conducting business in a way that impacts positively on the environment, society and economy. From being a member of environmental bodies such as the UK Plastics Pact and Ethical Trade Initiative, to working with customers to reduce food waste and supporting the local community and charities, the food producer puts sustainability at the heart of everything it does.

The Lord Lieutenant was full of praise for apetito on its 3rd Queen’s Award win, “It is incredibly impressive for a business to win three of these awards. apetito is the epitome of what a good business should be, and to present this award today has been an absolute privilege. I am incredibly proud of our county and it is our local business community which keeps it going, both financially and economically. Having Queen’s Award-winning businesses in Wiltshire can only continue to do it good.”

The presentation was attended by over 30 apetito staff, from the CEO, to many of those involved directly with the award entry. The lunch was attended by some of apetito’s ‘Long Service Heroes’, members of Team apetito with over 20 years’ service. Carol Walton, who was presented with this year’s trophy, has been with the company for over 42 years, believes it is the company’s commitment to its staff and customers which makes the real the difference. “I have seen the company progress to become a very employee orientated business, who really look after their own. This commitment was a key reason why we won this award.

“apetito also makes a real difference to the customers we serve. My father, who is 101 for example, would not be able to live independently in his own home if it wasn’t for the food, we provide via our Wiltshire Farm Foods business. It is a great honour to be here today.”

If there’s one thing that’s close to the heart of Lamb Weston, it’s keeping their customers happy with top quality, tasty and versatile frozen potato products but global category leader Lamb Weston also cares about the planet and the people on it.

That’s why they donated the equivalent of 1,400 portions of frozen sweet potato product to help food redistribution charity City Harvest feed the hungry.

City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way by distributing to 260 organisations that feed the city’s most vulnerable people.

While thousands of Londoners go hungry each day, safe, healthy and usable food is being dumped as waste. City Harvest collects this nutritious surplus food from all segments of the food industry including restaurants, grocers, manufacturers, wholesalers, hotels and caterers.

Their nine drivers then deliver high quality, nourishing food to organisations that provide meals to vulnerable people including homeless shelters, soup kitchens, children’s programs, centres for the elderly, and refuges for women experiencing domestic violence.

Lamb Weston’s 20 cases of Sweet Potato CrissCuts were distributed to various regular recipients, including Acton Homeless Concern, which serves up 200 covers every lunchtime to anyone who needs a meal.

The driver sees mums who drop their kids at school then go to Acton Homeless Concern for a lunch. They spend what little they have on feeding their kids but they don’t feed themselves because they can’t afford it,” says Sigourney Merrony-Potton, City Harvest’s Head of Food Development.

About 20% of our food comes from City Harvest, which is about a saving of £100 per week,” says Ian Breen, Director of Acton Homeless Concern. “With the help of City Harvest we can provide our clients with a much more varied and healthy diet to what they were already getting before, i.e. fresh vegetables and more meat.”

More of Lamb Weston’s product went to the American Church soup kitchen which provides up to 250 covers a day to homeless people.

And yet more went to Sands End Adventure Playground, in Fulham, which provides after school care for children. Hot meals can be bought, but not every parent can afford it. City Harvest’s regular trips mean every child gets to eat a hot meal.

The food from City Harvest enables us to feed all of our children equally, regardless of their family’s income,” says Julie Cavanagh, Playground Manager at Sands End Adventure Playground. “This means all the children will receive a hot nutritious meal, that some might not get at home. This also means we have free-up money from the food bill to spend on supplies arts and crafts and other activities.”

The Sweet Potato CrissCuts are a healthier alternative to chips, which is great for us here at the playground because we try and give our kids a hot healthy meal,” says Neda Anderson, of Sands End Adventure Playground. “Some of the kids we have in the playground might not have a hot meal at home, so being able to give them something so tasty and healthy is great, and all the kids loved them and asked for more!! The CrissCuts were so easy to cook and they were an amazing addition to the meal.”

Since City Harvest set up four years ago, they’ve ‘rescued’ 5 million meals. They’re always looking to take on partners, like Lamb Weston and others, to donate on a one-off or regular basis.

We’re improving people’s lives,” says Sigourney. “Most of us take it for granted that we’ll eat decent food when we’re hungry. For some of those who are fed by the organisations we deliver to, it may be the only hot meal they have all week.”

The food we redistribute helps organisations serve thousands of healthy meals each week and reduce their annual grocer bills – freeing up funds that can be reinvested in other vital support services. We divert food from landfill where it would release gases toxic to the environment. To date we’ve redistributed food valued at more than £6 million, free, to our partners and offset 7,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases,” says Sigourney.

What is really important to us is enabling all people to eat great food. City Harvest vans are greeted with excitement because people know that they contain high quality food (and sometimes flowers!) from some of the best providers in London.

Our food both nourishes and transforms lives. Our commitment to solving the issue of hunger goes beyond food donations. Many of our warehouse staff, drivers and volunteers have experienced homelessness and hunger first-hand and their passion for helping others has strengthened our mission.”

Erudus launches steering groups to help shape the future of product data software

Wholesalers and manufacturers are being invited to help shape the future look and feel of the industry’s leading software for food product data.

Erudus is seeking to strengthen its position as the go-to provider of nutritional and allergen information and is holding its inaugural steering committee meetings with a clear emphasis on gathering views and opinions of leading foodservice businesses.

The company will be revealing its plans as well as facilitating open and honest discussions between users and its technical and development teams.

The event will cover product notifications, data integrity, changes to product specifications, and future projects and development.

Jon Shayler, chief operating officer, Erudus, said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Erudus and its users. We have launched several integration partnerships and our reach across the industry has grown at a fast rate as brands continue to take allergen and nutritional data more seriously.

The steering committees are the latest move by Erudus to work closely with foodservice brands, with the company also launching a dedicated Slack channel, a cloud-based collaboration tool allowing free-flowing two-way communication.

Jon added: “We constantly review how we engage with our users and our aim is for each committee to meet twice a year, as well as encourage further use of our Slack channel for year-round conversations about how the software can be improved.”

Erudus has more than 90,000 manufacturers, caterers, and wholesalers using its software, which contains more than 60,000 products.

The world is far behind in the fight against climate change, and all actors, not just governments, need to play their part, especially the biogas industry, delegates to the World Biogas Summit in Birmingham, UK, heard this month.

Four years after countries pledged to limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius and strive for a safer 1.5 degree target, the planet is on a trajectory to 3.6 degrees warming based on a tally of the 183 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted to date from the signatories to the Paris Agreement.

In remarks at the opening of the Summit, Niclas Svenningsen, Manager, Global Climate Action at UN Climate Change, gave this stark overview of the climate emergency and highlighted the value of biogas technology in the mix.

“There is a tremendous potential for biogas to be a significant building block in the climate and energy plans for the UK, EU and the world,” said Mr Svenningsen. “The largest single emission source is by far energy production. Some 70% of global GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions are directly caused by energy generation, and most of that is by burning fossil fuel. Wind and solar are among the most rapidly expanding new renewable energy sources, but too many countries are still subsidising fossil fuel.”

“UN Secretary-General António Guterres has been very clear in stating that the Paris Agreement and investments in fossil fuels are incompatible. Some say it is impossible to stop or even decrease our fossil fuel dependence, but business as usual is not an option, and we have seen these transformations before. Horses replaced by cars, telefax machines replaced by email… It was possible because the need was there, and the technology was there.  And this is where we are with biogas technology.”

“Biogas has all the features of the next generation technology,” said Mr. Svenningsen. “It is a win-win-win-win-win industry: Win for turning GHG into energy; Win by using that energy to replace fossil fuels; Win by turning global waste, that releases dangerous levels of methane gas every day, into a valuable resource; Win by creating jobs and contributing to the new low-carbon economy; Win by offering a stable energy source that can be built and used even at the household scale in remote areas.”

“With the right incentives, the right policies and the right support, biogas can and will offer key opportunities for many countries to help implement the Paris Agreement, while at the same time address several of their Sustainable Development Goals: clean energy, clean water and sanitation, good health, responsible consumption and production, livable cities, sustainable transport.”

“Biogas needs to be at the table when the future policies of governments are designed, when NDCs are reviewed and taken to the next level and other supporting measures, such as targets for banning food waste going to landfill, are set.”

“This work needs to be conducted hand in hand; it needs to put together business, government and civil society.”

He concluded with a plea on behalf of the youth of the world: “the generations that will inherit this planet, our sons, our daughters, their children and all generations to come. We have the power and the responsibility to build the world that they want and deserve.”

The inaugural World Biogas Summit, organised by the World Biogas Association (WBA) in partnership with the UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), took place in Birmingham, UK on 3–4 July 2019 alongside the UK AD and World Biogas Expo 2019.

The event saw the launch of a major WBA report on the Global Potential of Biogas, which was presented to Mr Svenningsen alongside a previous, ground-breaking report on Global Food Waste Management – an Implementation Guide for Cities, published in 2018 in partnership with the C40 Cities network.

David Newman, WBA President, said:

“Niclas has summed up in a few sentences what we have been saying for some time, that biogas production is a win-win for the planet, our economy and social development globally. The report we issued shows we are still only scratching the surface of potential- we have developed just 2% of the industry’s long-term potential so far. At full scale we could reduce some 10-12% of global greenhouse gas emissions and as Niclas says, we need the policies to enable that now, above all by reducing and eliminating fossil fuel subsidies.”
