Reed Boardall Group’s financial performance continues to show resilience

Reed Boardall Group’s financial performance continues to show resilience

Yorkshire-based cold storage and transport business The Reed Boardall Group Limited has once again achieved strong results despite operating in a highly competitive market with rising costs. The company grew turnover to £61.6m in its last financial year (ending 31 March 2018), a 2.3% rise in revenues from £60.2m last year.

Boroughbridge-based Reed Boardall, one of the best-known names in temperature controlled logistics for the last 25 years, was also able to continue its consistent, steady performance by achieving increased volumes compared with the previous year. The company saw adjusted EBITDA hold steady at £3.44m (2017: £3.53m).

“As a trusted partner to many of the leading retailers and food manufacturers in the UK, remaining at the forefront of the sector and continuing to provide high levels of service, implement meticulous safety procedures and invest in the latest innovations remain a priority,” explains Marcus Boardall, deputy chief executive of The Reed Boardall Group.

“Given the fierce competition within the transport industry, along with rising fuel costs, this remains a challenging sector. However, with our long-established customer relationships and strong reputation, we are proving resilient and recently invested in a further 30 bespoke, aerodynamic trailers to complement our 300-strong fleet.”

Sarah Roberts, finance director, adds: “Our strong results are testament to the efficiency of our single site model, giving customers a truly integrated cold storage and transport service, and establishing us as the largest consolidator of frozen food in the UK. Over the last financial year, we have not only been able to improve utilisation of our 142,000 pallet capacity cold storage facility, but also to win additional business on the strength of the ancillary services we offer including blast freezing, picking and packing.

“In such a dynamic and competitive market, customers need a logistics partner which consistently delivers on its promises. With our 25 year heritage serving the UK food industry, we have a depth of experience which sets us apart from competitors and also the vision and commitment to continue innovating for the future.”

Reed Boardall is one of the largest temperature controlled food distribution businesses in the UK, storing and delivering frozen food from manufacturers across Britain, Europe and further afield to all the UK’s best-known supermarkets.  Operating 24/7, its 170-strong fleet of vehicles moves an average of 12,000 pallets a day and it stores around £100m worth of products on behalf of its customers.  It employs over 750 staff at its single site in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire.

Speciality Breads Launches Vegan Society Registered Range

On the back of growing demand for plant-based foods across the foodservice industry and the wider UK, innovative British bakers Speciality Breads has announced the launch of an over 60-strong range of vegan, freshly frozen artisan breads, which The Vegan Society has registered with its much-coveted trademark.

The newly registered range comprises of over 60 existing lines including ciabattas, focaccias, baguettes and sourdough, plus an exciting new product the Eden Burger Bun.

For the full list of The Vegan Society registered products please visit – www.specialitybreads.co.uk

George Gill, CEO at The Vegan Society, said:

“We are delighted to register breads by Speciality Breads Limited with our Vegan Trademark.  As a company they have fully embraced the need to clearly demonstrate the true provenance and integrity of every ingredient.  Speciality Breads primarily supply the foodservice industry so we are delighted that such a broad range of breads carrying our Vegan Trademark will now be available in restaurants, hotels, pubs and staff canteens throughout the UK.”

Simon Cannell, Managing Director of Speciality Breads, commented:

“The number of people adopting a plant-based diet has increased considerably over the last few years and all caterers are looking for ways to enhance the range they provide.  Reasons behind the choice to become vegan are varied but whatever the rationale, people like to know everything about the food they eat.”

“We have taken the time to investigate every ingredient throughout our entire supply chain to guarantee that our breads are 100% vegan but we have not compromised on quality, our breads remain absolutely premium. Our breads can be enjoyed by all, which helps our customers, in turn, keep their customers happy.”

“To celebrate, our bakers have created the new Eden Burger Bun. This new bake cleverly includes a touch of potato to create a lovely soft flavoursome crumb under a rich golden ‘soft top’ crust; this bun performs admirably with relishes and sauces.  We expect it to be a big hit alongside the fantastic beetroot, jack fruit, chick pea and other plant-based burgers we’re seeing.  Each bun weighs 90g and are packed 45 to a case.”

Country Range Offers Potato Perfection with New Crispy Coated Shoestring Fries

With chips of all shapes and sizes continuing to take up space on menus up and down the UK, leading independent foodservice brand Country Range has enhanced its choice with the launch of Crispy Coated Shoestring Fries.

Available through the Country Range Group’s network of independent wholesalers, the new addition comes in 2.5kg bags in cases of 4, giving caterers even more choice when it comes to their potato selection.

Chips or French fries continue to be the most popular potato option for consumers when eating out-of-home with research from NPD Crest showing that they accounted for 59.6% of all foodservice potato servings in the year ending March 2017.

One of the many recent innovations in the potato category has been to make the chip the star of the show by loading them with meaty or cheesy toppings or by serving them alongside a flavoursome selection of sauces and seasonings.

Country Range Crispy Coated Shoestring Fries – guaranteed to stay crispier for longer, these fries are made to a consistent length (7x7mm) and can be oven-baked in around 25 minutes. Suitable for vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs, nut allergy sufferers and lactose intolerant diets, they are a menu must-have.

Country Range’s Trading Director Martin Ward said:

“The popularity of potato products, and in particular fries, doesn’t seem to waiver so caterers of all sizes must ensure they offer their customers the very best. With crispiness and fluffiness high on people’s wish list when selecting their spuds, our latest launch definitely ticks the box and offers caterers a consistent, great quality chip which is delicious on its own or when accompanying any main meal.”

Oakland Int’l DLM Service Helping Keep EU/UK Transport Moving

Oakland International’s DLM Service Helping Keep EU/UK Transport Moving

Reconditioning migrant affected loads for more than 15 years, multi temperature supply chain, distribution and logistics specialist Oakland International has seen a significant increase in requests to deal with contaminated loads in recent months.

Oakland Director, Robert Hardy, commented: “Whatever form of Brexit we end up with the safe movement of goods will still need to continue. All parties in the food supply chain from producers and manufacturers, hauliers, importers and retailers, they all have legal responsibilities under regulation EC178/2002 to ensure our food safety, with heavy penalties applied if these regulations are breached.”

Oakland’s HACCP accredited Distress Load Management (DLM) service minimises losses and food waste for customers, loss adjusters and hauliers on distressed loads due to movement during transit, theft or stowaway incursion. More than 5,000 trucks a day arrive in the UK from continental Europe and due to the sheer volume of traffic Border Force is only able to check around 10% of inbound trailers. During the last 12 months they have detected some 56,000 migrant attempts to gain illegal entry to the UK. Vehicles are regularly sent to Oakland when a risk to food safety has been detected, with load recovery and assessment undertaken same day or the following day in most cases.

Added Robert: “Oakland’s accredited DLM service has built a strong reputation trusted by both brands and insurers and consistently operates a recovery level of 85% of product, with nothing sent to landfill. Any residual food waste is redirected to nominated anaerobic digestion plant centres or recycling centres and used for renewable energy.

“A 5-point check includes, swab tests, thermal imaging and CO2 detection, and although we’re not particularly looking for stowaways, we will detect any contamination if this is the case. Our customers rely on us to protect their supply chain with clean cargo given a HACCP certificate of compliance to be presented on delivery, and contaminated cargo quarantined. Our thorough vehicle check and swift turnaround is making many of our customers consider making it a mandatory process for all inbound cargo.”

Free advice is available via www.contaminatedload.com or by calling their helpline on 0044 (0) 333 014 2850. A multi-award winner, Oakland is BRC double A accredited and EHO approved and as a multi temperature distribution business they specialise in contract packing, storage, picking, tempering and support retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets via hubs and facilities in the UK, Ireland and an overseas partner in Spain.
