CONTAMINATION OF WHEAT CROPS WITH MUSTARD – FSA REQUIRES FEEDBACK

The FSA have made us aware of the possible contamination of wheat crops with mustard during 2021. They have asked us to share the following questions with our members to help get a better understanding of who has been affected and how widespread this issue is:

  1. We understand that in Europe in 2021 some wheat crops were “heavily infested” with mustard? What caused this infestation? Agricultural practices (e.g. mustard in the rotation, herbicide regime)? Climatic conditions?
  2. Did it affect wheat harvests across Europe and beyond?
  3. Are regular samples being taken from tanks before wheat is transferred to silos to ascertain the prevalence of contamination?
  4. When samples are tested, are both ELISA and PCR techniques employed?
  5. What information are industry TA’s passing to its members – quantitative information from allergen tests or advisory allergen information or both?

Whilst we appreciate the above questions may not be directly relevant to your business, this is an intelligence gathering exercise therefore any information you may have gathered from your supply chain would be welcomed.

Please email any feedback to receiptandmanagement@food.gov.uk, also copying in Holly (hollyjones@bfff.co.uk) to ensure we are kept up to date on the situation.

Alternatively, if you wish to send a response to the FSA but remain anonymous, you can share your comments with Holly (hollyjones@bfff.co.uk), who will then feedback anonymously on your behalf.

ELECTRIC TOP OF AGENDA AS ARCTIC FLEET BUSINESS DOUBLES FOR OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL

With sustainability being top of the agenda, Oakland International’s distribution business doubled in 2021 with further investment planned in sustainable technologies and electric vehicles over the coming 12-months set to bring their fleet to over 100 prime movers.

The total supply chain solutions specialist launched Oakland Distribution in 2020 in response to customer need for supply chain resilience and control at a time when the market was quite tumultuous.

Further Investment plans in electric and sustainable technologies include Ecodrive, Multi-compartment trailers with tail lifts fitted to a number of these and satellite controlled with monitored temperature recordings, all of which form part of Oakland’s focus and drive towards carbon neutrality, with the new fridge units amongst the most efficient in the market. They have also purchased a further 25 trailers from Gray & Adams and invested in 20 new Renault T480 tractor units.

Oakland International Distribution Director Martin Pearson commented: “We have all faced significant changes and challenges due to Covid, but with challenge and change also comes opportunity.

“Last year we opened our transport facility in Bardon which enhanced existing capabilities, and together with further fleet investment, it meant we were able to develop our distribution competences to provide an excellent end-to-end service for our customers throughout the UK.”

Oakland’s temperature-controlled trailers also include the latest carrier vector HE19 multi-temp refrigeration unit, which offers greater fuel efficiency and longer service intervals. Electric trailer trials in August with Gray & Adams and carrier Transicold went exceptionally well, with the technology proving itself the way forward, and in line with Oakland’s carbon reduction goals, which will eventually remove their reliance on diesel.

Through sustained investment Oakland has enjoyed substantial business growth to the point that Oakland Distribution is today a market-leader in its sector, and all achieved in less than two-years.

To promote awareness and to encourage other businesses to not only think sustainably, but to think ethically, their newest addition to the liveried fleet includes trailers branded with Molly Olly’s Wishes, a charity which supports children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

BRCGS AA rated, Oakland International operates 24-hours/7 days a week and is a D2C/B2C/B2B specialist in contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution and a brand development support provider for ambient, chilled and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain.

DAWN FOODS APPOINTS 2022 STUDENT AMBASSADORS

As part of an ongoing partnership with University College Birmingham (UCB) to support young people entering the bakery industry, Dawn Foods has appointed its 2022 Student Ambassadors.

The new Student Ambassadors are Ellen Horsey, a final year student on UCB’s Bakery and Patisserie Technology degree, and Claire Pretty, also in her final year on the same course.  Krystal Jenkins, Dawn’s 2021 Ambassador will continue for the beginning of this year. Vaishnavi Vora, a Dawn Student ambassador in 2019, is now employed by the company as a Junior Product Developer.

Ellen, Claire and Krystal will be working with Dawn’s Application Chef, Robin Loud, to create new recipes using Dawn’s products, as well as blogs and insights which Dawn hopes will be beneficial to professional bakers. With a finger on the pulse regarding the latest bakery trends and influencers, both Ellen and Claire share their bakes and ideas on their own Instagram platforms. Dawn’s social platforms will also be used to share the ambassadors’  blog posts, recipes, ideas, tips and trends.

As vegan is one of the fastest growing opportunities for campus catering outlets, the new Student Ambassadors will be kicking off the year with Dawn, looking at vegan recipes and ideas.

Twenty-year-old Ellen Horsey from Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire says she has always loved baking with family members. She has recently been working in a local care home kitchen, assisting the chef preparing food for the residents and baking yummy treats for them too! Ellen, who has an interest in gluten-free bakery, is keen on pursuing a career in bakery NPD.

Vegetarian Claire Pretty is interested in food intolerances and vegan bakery. Originally an art student, she has found that bakery is a great combination of art and science, and so chose to pursue this for her further education. Alongside her studies, she is currently working as an assistant pastry chef at a bakery in Birmingham to gain further experience in the industry.

Jacqui Passmore, Marketing Manager UK and Ireland at Dawn Foods said:

“Dawn’s partnership with UCB is an enormously beneficial two-way process. We gain some fantastic insight from the students on the latest trends to share with our bakery customers, while our ambassadors gain hands-on experience within the industry to enhance their CVs. The standard of applicants every year is always high, and we are delighted to be working with the students who showed us some new ideas and understanding of current bakery trends in their applications”.
