ETHYLENE OXIDE CONTAMINATION – UPDATE ON TESTING

On October 25th, we reported that the FSA had written to Local Authorities (LAs) relating to Ethylene Oxide (EtO) residues detected in xanthan gum and informing of the actions to be taken.

On the back of this, we contacted the FSA to highlight to them that currently, there are NO laboratories in the UK accredited to test for EtO. This will obviously have an impact on how effectively and quickly products can be identified and withdrawn from the market.

In light of this, the BFFF would recommend in the first instance trying to get assurance from the suppliers of the ingredient in question as although accredited testing facilities are available in the EU, exporting samples to the EU is proving extremely difficult and fraught with problems.

The FSA’s Scientific Sampling and Laboratory Policy (SSLP) Team have responded to our communications and have confirmed that conversations have been occurring with Fera who have confirmed that they will be offering an EtO method commercially soon (within the next few weeks).

SALMONELLOSIS OUTBREAK LINKED TO IMPORTED SESAME-BASED PRODUCTS

There have been reports of salmonellosis infections linked to the consumption of sesame-based products such as tahini and halva imported from Syria.

Since January 2019, up to 121 people have been affected in five European countries, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Several types of Salmonella are linked to the outbreak – S. Mbandaka, S. Havana, S. Orion, S. Amderdam, S. Senftenberg, and S. Kintambo.

The products are sealed and ready to be consumed, which suggests that contamination occurred before they reached the European market.

Control measures on the involved batches have been implemented since August 2020. Nevertheless, cases were still being reported as recently as September 2021. This could be because the products have a long shelf life and are being stored in people’s homes.

EFSA and ECDC scientists concluded that there is still a risk of new Salmonella infections related to these products in the EU/EEA.

 

ENDING THE NEED FOR FOOD BANKS: CONSULTATION ON A DRAFT NATIONAL PLAN

The Scottish Government have published a consultation seeking views on their vision and approach to ending the need for food banks as a primary response to food insecurity and invites further suggestions on what more can be done to shape a national plan.

Their approach is weighted towards prevention firstly and responding where emergencies or crises arise. This would include:

  • Minimum income Guarantee and Universal Basic Services
  • Strengthening the protection of human rights, including the right to food as contained within the right to an adequate standard of living
  • Investing in cash-first local partnership work to make food banks the last port of call
  • Piloting the use of shopping vouchers in place of food bank referrals
  • Developing shared values between national food insecurity funders on access to emergency financial assistance and holistic support services
  • Working with the Trussell trust and independent Food Aid Network to support their food bank transition and exit strategies.

The Scottish Government are inviting people to respond by 25th January 2022 using the consultation hub, Citizen Space.

NEW EU FARM TO FORK STRATEGY TO MAKE FOOD HEALTHIER AND MORE SUSTINABLE

Parliament welcomes the Farm to Form Strategy and underlines the importance of producing sustainable and healthy food to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal, including on climate, biodiversity, zero pollution and public health.

MEPs highlighted the need for enhanced sustainability at every step of the food supply chain and reiterated that everyone – from farmer to consumer – has a role to play in this. To ensure that farmers can earn a fair share of the profit made from sustainably produced food, MEPs want the Commission to reinforce efforts – including through the adaptation of competition rules – to strengthen the position of farmers in the supply chain.

Other recommendations include:

Healthier food

  • EU science-based recommendations for healthy diets, including a mandatory EU front-of-pack nutritional label
  • Overconsumption of meat and highly processed foods with high salt, sugar and fat content must be addressed, including by setting maximum intake levels.

Pesticides and protection of pollinators

  • Improvement of the pesticides approval process and better monitoring of implementation to protect pollinators andbiodiversity
  • Binding reduction targets for pesticide use. Member states should implement targets through theirCAP Strategic Plans

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

  • “Fit for 55 in 2030 package”must regulate and set ambitious targets for emissions from agriculture and related land use, including strict criteria for biomass-based renewable energy
  • Natural carbon sinks must be restored and enhanced.

Animal welfare

  • Need for common, science-based animal welfare indicators for stronger pan-EU harmonisation
  • Current EU legislation must be evaluated to see if changes are needed
  • Gradual end to theuse of cages in EU animal farming
  • Non-EU animal products should be allowed only if their standards are EU-aligned.

Organic farming

  • EU’s organic land should be increased by 2030
  • Need for initiatives – promotion, public procurement and fiscal – to stimulate demand

BRAKES ANNOUNCES CSR DEVELOPMENTS

-new packaging policy leads new initiatives-

Brakes has announced further developments to its market-leading CSR programme, with the introduction of a new, comprehensive packaging policy and the completion of a roll out of new energy efficient lighting aimed at minimising the company’s impact on the environment.

The introduction of the new packaging policy builds on the successful completion of Brakes’ 2ZERO20 black plastics commitment which removed hard-to-recycle black plastics, equating to more than a thousand tonnes, from its supply chain. It also follows hot on the heels of Brakes’ latest CSR Award, where, for the 8th year in succession, Brakes and Sysco specialty business, M&J Seafood were awarded the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year.

In October, the business completed a roll out of new LED lighting across its UK-wide network of depots which will save around 500 tonnes of carbon, the equivalent of driving a lorry around the world 14 times.  Brakes is now focusing on advanced plans to introduce its own sources of alternative energy, which it hopes to launch shortly.

The creation of the new packaging policy sees Brakes reinforce its commitment to ensuring that suppliers maximise the use of materials that are recyclable, reusable or compostable where appropriate, underpinning Brakes’ CSR requirements. They also cover the minimisation of waste, reduction of carbon to produce and transport packaging and minimisation of the use of resources throughout the production process.

STAR’S DR ROB LAMB RECOGNISED FOR INDUSTRY ACHIEVEMENT AT THE RAC COOLING AWARDS 2021

Star Refrigeration’s Group Sales and Marketing Director has received a prestigious accolade at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London during the RAC Cooling Awards 2021. The Fred Jamieson award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the industry and has been influential with both colleagues and customers in the cooling and heating sector.  It recognises Dr Rob Lamb’s achievements over his 27 year career in refrigeration.

 

Dr Lamb studied with Prof Geoffrey Haselden at Leeds University for three years before beginning his career at Star in 1998. Over two decades he has focussed his efforts on sustainability; developing international initiatives for the sharing of knowledge regarding natural refrigerants and energy and carbon reductions in the industry, with an emphasis on the transition towards net zero.

 

The judging panel were looking for the following qualities: entrepreneurial flair, innovation, determination and passion for the industry and the people within it. They agreed Dr Lamb has been instrumental in supporting the sector’s transition to net zero emissions and continues to provide guidance to both customers and peers alike.

 

Dr Lamb has authored technical papers on topics related to efficiency and sustainability and has presented at symposiums and conferences around the world including the Cold Chain Federation, the International Institute of Refrigeration and the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration.

 

Dr Lamb said of receiving the award, “I am honoured to be presented with the Fred Jamieson award. It is very special to receive recognition from others in the industry for the work I’m involved in.

I would like to thank Star Refrigeration, a company which has offered me many opportunities. Thanks to my colleagues, customers and industry peers for the nomination and everyone who has supported me throughout my twenty three years in the sector. It is the people I have worked with both at Star and across the industry who have enabled me to enjoy my career”

“I hope I can carry on making a difference to the industry for two more decades, a time which will bring us many challenges but hopefully also many triumphs.”

 

As a prominent and respected individual within the industry, Dr Lamb has been a Trustee of the Institute of Refrigeration and currently chairs the Membership Committee. Additionally, he is the chairman of the Steering Committee of eurammon e.V. and serves on the Council of the British Refrigeration Association.

 

His passion for the industry he works in extends to the people working within it, and future generations of refrigeration specialists. He constantly endorses initiatives which promote diversity in the sector, including the STEMazing programme which supports female refrigeration and air conditioning engineers from Africa. Dr Lamb also encourages STEM awareness events with local schools to encourage children to consider exciting careers in engineering. Moreover, he has promoted the introduction of diversity initiatives in the workplace for the benefit of employees.

 

Group Managing Director, Dr Andy Pearson, said, “I am delighted that Rob has been recognised for his significant contributions to our industry. He covers a very wide range of activities, writing and presenting research papers as well as developing new products and projects for our customers. It is particularly appropriate that this recognition comes from his peers in the industry and highlights the broad range of contributions he makes behind the scenes that often go unnoticed.”
