NEARLY 200 SICK AFTER SALMONELLA OUTBREAK IN EU AND UK

A multi-country Salmonella outbreak has resulted in nearly 200 people becoming sick since September 2021.

At the time of writing, there are 196 reported cases of Salmonella Mbandaka ST413, of which 8 were in the UK, the remaining cases were spread across Czechia, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Israel. Nineteen of the total number cases were hospitalised and five had septicaemia. One case in the UK resulted in death.

Based on case interviews from Finland and the UK, ready-to-eat chicken products and/or fresh chicken meat are the likely vehicles of infection.

Following investigations, the food safety authority in Finland linked the suspected RTE products to an Estonian company, however, this link could not be verified by the identification of batches nor by microbiological evidence. The Estonian company received processed chicken meat from different suppliers, and its role as a source of infection could not be established.

FOOD AND DRINK SERVICE FIRMS ARE MOST LIKELY TO CUT TRADING TO TACKLE ENERGY COSTS

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published a report on 14 November, which explores some of the businesses hardest hit by increasing energy prices.

The report highlights that food and drink service businesses were more likely than any other industry to say they plan to cut trading by at least two days per week in November 2022 to reduce their energy costs.

More than 1 in 20 businesses in this sector (6%), planned to stop trading for two or more additional days a week in the month. The same percentage of food and drink service businesses said they had already done so in the last three months. It was also reported that they were the most likely to reduce trading hours, even if they were still operating for the same number of days.

During the survey, businesses were asked to describe their current situation and across the hospitality industry, 23% said energy prices were their principal concern for October, which was similar to November (22%). The most recent responses were collected after the UK government pledged to subsidise businesses’ energy bills in September.

The data from the survey also suggests that manufacturers are under significant strain from energy prices, which could then have a knock-on effect for the hospitality industry.

EU TO TOUGHEN PACKAGING WASTE RULES

The European Commission has proposed radical changes to the rules on packaging waste, because on average, each European generated nearly 180kg of packaging waste a year. The EU-wide changes will affect UK companies that trade with the EU.

The Commission are introducing the new rule because 40% of plastics and 50% of paper used in the EU are destined for packaging, so action has been taken to prevent a 19% increase in packaging waste by 2030.

Reusable packaging options are going to be available for consumers to get rid of unnecessary packaging, there will be limits for over-packaging and clear recycling labels will be provided.

The Commission have also said that this change could create new business opportunities, especially for smaller companies, because of less demand for virgin materials, which will boost Europe’s recycling capacity and make it less dependent on primary resources and external suppliers.

The proposed revision of the EU legislation on packaging and packaging waste has three main objectives:

  1. Prevent the generation of packaging waste
  2. Boost high quality (‘closed loop’) recycling
  3. Reduce the need for primary natural resources and create a well-functioning market for secondary raw materials.

The headline target is to reduce packaging waste by 15% by 2040 per Member State per capita, compared with 2018. This would lead to an overall waste reduction in the EU of some 37%.

FANTASTIC AMOUNT RAISED FOR TWO WORTHY CAUSES AT THIS YEARS ANNUAL LUNCHEON

At last week’s Annual Luncheon we asked guests to dig deep for our chosen charities and they didn’t disappoint raising a total of £6,325!

We were delighted to be supporting the Trussell Trust who support a network of food bank centres across the UK and Prostate UK who’s top priority is funding research to stop prostate cancer killing men.

After inviting guests to donate in aid of the Trussell Trust through our Justgiving page and text to donate numbers we closed the event with a very exciting auction of a cricket bat signed by Ian Botham hosted by our excellent speaker, Geoff Miller. After being treated for prostate cancer earlier this year Geoff has gone on to raise thousand of pounds for Prostate UK auctioning signed bats at the various events he attends across the country.

The buzz in the room during the fast pace auction was electric and the amount kept rising until the final bid was made by Oakfield Foods Ltd.  In a major twist, the bat was very generously donated back in order to raise even more money in aid of our two charities!  The bat was then re-auctioned with Westbridge Food Group Ltd, the winners of the bat with another very generous final bid.

Thank you very much to everyone who donated or bid in the auction and helped us raise such a fantastic amount for two very deserving charities.

12 FROZEN TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS

Christmas can be a busy and stressful time as we attempt to juggle socialising, shopping, and food prep. If your kitchen capability falls short of ‘MasterChef’, do not fear because frozen food is here.

To help families make the most of the festive period, the British Frozen Food Federation’s 12 Frozen Tips for Christmas provides a step-by-step guide to making friends with your freezer:

Tip 1: Save money by buying frozen
A study by Manchester Metropolitan University found frozen food offers around a 30% saving compared to fresh or chilled foods. For an average family, this equates to a huge saving of £1,500 a year.

Tip 2: Remove stress from Christmas dinner
Frozen food can remove a lot of the stress from cooking at Christmas, as pre-prepared festive foods are available from turkeys to vegetables. Less preparation means less washing up!

Tip 3: Maximise nutrients with frozen food
When food is frozen as soon as it is picked or prepared, the freshness is locked in. With no need for preservatives, just turn the temperature down to activate ‘nature’s pause button’.

Tip 4: Buy frozen turkey before the rush
Buying your turkey frozen in advance this year means you can miss the rush in the week before Christmas and still have the same high quality and premium taste that you would expect from the centrepiece of your Christmas dinner.

Tip 5: Ready prepared favourites
Almost all the nation’s favourite trimmings are available ready prepared in the frozen aisle – whether you love roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, honey roasted parsnips, or even Brussels sprouts! Buying frozen saves time on preparation and cooking whilst making sure that the flavours on your plate are effortlessly exciting, varied, and festive.

Tip 6: Easy vegetarian and vegan options
The variety of frozen food available means that vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner. Options like nut roasts and sweet potato wellingtons in the frozen aisle mean that alternative roasts are even more straight forward, tasty, and nutritious than you might think.

Tip 7: Out of season foods available all year round
As frozen food is available all year round, you get the pick of the crop from the freezer. Foods like summer berries can be enjoyed in the depths of winter without paying over the odds for imported or forced-grown produce.

Tip 8: Use frozen cranberries for sauce and cocktails
Frozen cranberries are ideal for making your cranberry sauce. With frozen cranberries, the freshness is locked in which will make your sauce the best it can be, and you can also use your frozen cranberries for your favourite Christmas cocktails!

Tip 9: Reduce waste by cooking only what you need
With frozen food we can cook only what we need and save the rest for a later date. Using pre-prepared frozen vegetables also reduces food waste in the supply chain due to the use of ‘wonky veg’ that wouldn’t make it onto the supermarket shelf as ‘fresh’. Reducing the amount of food waste before we have even got to the checkouts is the right thing to do.

Tip 10: Finish in style with frozen puddings
Whether you prefer cold or hot puddings, frozen desserts will please everyone around the dinner table and mean that you can stock up in advance to have sweet treats that will last all the way through the festive season.

Tip 11: Make your list and check it twice
Frozen food allows you to get ahead of the game with your Christmas food shopping, as ‘nature’s pause button’ has been activated so freshness, nutrients, and high-quality taste are locked in. By doing your Christmas food shopping early and buying frozen, you can avoid the busy supermarket rush before the big day, whilst saving money and time.

Tip 12: Freezers aren’t just for Christmas
Buying frozen food is an affordable, nutritious, and convenient way to enjoy great tasting and high-quality food all year round. Not only can frozen food save you money and time, but it can also remove a lot of the stress from trying to fit cooking healthy meals into your busy schedule.

Next time you are in the supermarket, make sure to have a look in the frozen food aisle to see the range of great frozen foods which can become a staple in your weekly shop.
