Heather White is a leading international expert on all things Networking, Personal Brand and LinkedIn, and just loves connecting people!

The hard truth about networking is that if your contacts don’t ‘get’ you they can’t help you. Networking is about building a strong network of contacts who understand you and are willing to recommend you when the moment arises. It is also about caring for and being of service to those in your network.

For the last 20 years, using a very down-to-earth and practical approach, Heather has helped countless people – to communicate their roles, strengths and value more confidently and to engage more both internally and externally to promote better communications, encourage business relationships and improve career progression.

Whatever your position or field, whether you are a senior executive, a new graduate, a business owner, in sales, in education or in finance, Heather can help you to build an authentic brand, to develop long-term business and career relationships and to become far more confident.

Utilising Heather’s skills, connections and experience, she has created a unique service called Boardroom Ready. The Boardroom Ready programme matches senior executives from FTSE500 and other top ranking organisations with the boards of AIM listed, privately owned and SME companies. By matching each individual’s needs to a development role on a real commercial board, the Boardroom Ready programme aims to contribute to the next generation of leaders.

Over the years Heather has delivered services to numerous high profile organisations such as: American Express, BAE Systems, BDO, Cambridge University Judge Business School, CGI, Christies, Commerzbank, Hult International Business School, Imperial College London, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, IOSH, Just Group plc, KPMG, London Business School, London Chamber of Commerce, Metlife, Motorola Solutions, Nationwide Building Society, PGIM, Royal Bank of Scotland, Siemens, The Law Society, UBM (UK) Ltd, University of St. Gallen and WHU Business School to name but a few.

KFF CELEBRATES ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY

Kent based wholesaler KFF (Kent Frozen Foods) turns 60 this month and it has been celebrating the milestone with a whole host of events and giveaways for customers and staff.

To mark the anniversary, KFF has been helping its customers to keep their staff looking “on point” by giving away dual branded chef’s jackets, whilst it’s own employees have been able to take part in a regular weekly prize draw to win anything from £50 restaurant vouchers to an overnight stay in London, including a Marco Pierre White dining experience.

‘We are extremely proud of the way that KFF has grown over the past 60 years, and the fact that it has now become one of the UK’s leading foodservice wholesalers,’ says marketing manager, James Mills. ‘And, with the ongoing support of our parent company, Sysco, we continue to invest in new products and services that further improve our customer proposition in all areas, from online ordering to sustainability.’

Established in 1962, KFF started life as a supplier of frozen food to local businesses within the Kent area, but it now covers a wide part of the south of England and has grown its product portfolio to include fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh and frozen fish, fresh meat, and a selection of artisan and local products.

IS CHRISTMAS 2022 CAUSING EMPLOYEE STRESS LEVELS TO RISE?

It is officially acceptable to talk about Christmas – even though, from a business perspective, it’s been on all our minds for a while.

Sodexo Engage, part of Sodexo Benefits and Rewards Services, is a leading expert in employee engagement, providing award-winning employee benefits, rewards and recognition, creating experiences that make a real difference to people’s lives, both inside and outside the workplace.

Sodexo Engage delivers powerful employee experience solutions which are developed in partnership with their stakeholders to lift the happiness and wellbeing of their people, which in turn supports their objectives and business performance.

Sodexo recently talked about How to avoid Pre-Christmas Burnout and Recognising and Reducing Stress in the Workplace, but those articles focused on stress predominantly caused by work.

Here, they are focusing on Christmas as the cause of your employees’ stress and, as an employer, how you can provide meaningful support during the festive season.

A TIME FOR STRESSING

It’s worth highlighting the need to be inclusive and mindful since not all employees will celebrate Christmas. For those that do, it can be an incredible time of year. However, businesses must understand that people will experience Christmas differently and be mindful that the festive season will cause additional personal and financial stress for some.

YouGov analysis from 2019 found that in the UK, more than two in five people experienced stress, and one in four struggled with anxiety and depression during Christmas. These figures could include your employees, and their mental wellbeing needs to be a business priority.

Employers will treat this as a time of celebration, but when the lights shine brightly, we need to pay attention to those hiding their struggles in the shadows.

FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS

As an employer, you have information that helps you understand your employees as people. If you only take one thing away from this article, let it be a desire to provide individualised employee support in whatever form it’s needed.

If you have employees who have separated from their partners or suffered a bereavement during the year, Christmas 2022 will look and feel vastly different to how it did last year.

Are your line managers as aware, empathetic, and supportive as they could be?

Do you operate an open-door policy where employees feel confident and comfortable discussing personal problems?

If you’re unsure of the answers to these questions, or you’re inclined to answer in the negative, it’s time to review your organisation’s culture and take steps to support mental health at work.

FINANCIAL CONCERNS

We’re experiencing a cost-of-living crisis, and, on average, with gifts, food, and entertainment, families spend an average of £500 more during Christmas. Most will budget and save for this extra expense, but this year, with energy bills at an all-time high, it’s been more challenging to set aside funds.

Households are making difficult decisions because, ultimately, something’s got to give. Once again, this isn’t a pressure caused by your organisation, but businesses will feel the effects when engagement and productivity levels decline because of personal financial worries.

A COMPLETE APPROACH TO EMPLOYEE WELLBEING

At this year’s EBLive exhibition, Sodexo Engage had the pleasure of sponsoring Ollie Ollerton’s keynote speech on the Power to Perform. His message focused on building people’s mental and physical resilience and the employers’ role in this.

MENTAL WELLBEING

We must move away from focusing on the cost to the business and, instead, understand the business benefits.

“We need to work a lot more on mental wealth, it’s the best investment we can make.” Ollie Ollerton, BreakPoint, EBLive 2022

As Ollie says, supporting employee mental wellbeing or mental wealth needs to be viewed as an investment. There may be an initial payment, but your business will likely see a return.

Here at Sodexo, we have an Employee Assistance Programme designed to support the mental wellbeing of your people. Our EAP service is fully managed and gives you access to accredited counsellors over the phone and face-to-face.

Mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety, are believed to trigger 70% of doctor visits and 85% of serious illnesses, and we’ve established that Christmas can increase anxiety and depression. Starting 2023 by incorporating mental health wellbeing within your business will not only provide vital support to your employees but also boost performance, employee retention and talent acquisition.

PHYSICAL WELLBEING

Add physical wellbeing initiatives, such as a Corporate Gym Membership or our Cycle to Work scheme, and you’re on your way to an all-encompassing employee wellbeing initiative. Also, as a salary sacrifice scheme, your business will make savings on National Insurance Contributions for every cycle purchased through your company.

FINANCIAL WELLBEING

You may think it’s too late to make changes that will provide financial support to your employees before Christmas, but that’s not the case. If you’ve not yet delivered the employee Christmas gift, bonus, or reward, then why not consider our Voucher Cheques?

Voucher Cheques are one of our most popular Christmas reward options because they’re bespoke to your business. You create the look and feel and set an amount, and your employees redeem their vouchers online. There’s a vast selection of brands and retailers to choose from, including supermarkets, so your employees can treat themselves or put it towards the festive food shop.

Better still, we only bill your business for the redeemed vouchers.

Have you considered incorporating a prepaid cashback card into your organisation to effectively support your employees’ financial wellbeing in 2023 and beyond?

Whether your business adds funds as a benefit or reward or leaves your employees to top up themselves, with our Spree cashback card in their hands, your people could earn up to 15% cashback at over 80 retailers.

PROVIDE MEANINGFUL EMPLOYEE SUPPORT THIS CHRISTMAS AND BEYOND WITH SODEXO ENGAGE

As employee engagement experts, we often discuss the importance of employee benefits and rewards as crucial to boosting employee engagement and performance, but providing wellbeing support is equally as vital.

The world is very much focused on the cost-of-living crisis, and many employers are adding to the wage packet to help ease employees’ financial burdens. However, to reinforce the resilience of their employees, organisations also need to incorporate financial, physical and mental wellbeing initiatives.

Boost employee performance by boosting employee wellbeing. Speak with one of our engagement experts today to discover how to get more for less, with maximum impact.

WRAP ANNOUNCES FOOD WASTE ACTION WEEK THEME FOR 2023

WRAP have announced their third Food Waste Action Week (FWAW) will take place 6-12 March 2023, with the theme ‘Win. Don’t Bin’.

The aim of the week is to demonstrate how valuable food is in our lives, how it unites people and how using up everything we buy saves money, time and the planet.

The campaign also aims to increase citizen’s confidence in ‘using up leftovers’ by promoting a range of skills that can be easily adopted but potentially have the greatest impact on reducing food waste in the home.

During the 2022 campaign, WRAP had support from 80 organisations across 12 countries, seeing it go international for the first time.

There are a number of ways to get involved in 2023 and support the ‘Win. Don’t Bin’ campaign, through direct sponsorship, running events and PR, and through helping to spread the campaign’s key messages across your own networks.

Download the Food Waste Action Week Partner Pack to start planning how you can get involved.

A toolkit with assets to download and use will be available in January 2023.

If you are interested in supporting Food Waste Action Week, please get in touch at lfhw@wrap.org.uk.

FSS SURVEY SPARKS FOOD SAFETY CONCERNS WITH CONSUMERS

The Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have found that a worrying fifty percent of consumers in Scotland have admitted to eating food which is passed its ‘use-by’ date, in an attempt to save money.

The survey, which was completed by 1000 members of Scottish public, asked a range of questions linked to behaviours related to food and the cost-of-living crisis.

A total of 70% of those surveyed revealed they were more worried now than in April 2022 about being able to afford food, while 41% were changing cooking behaviours/methods to try and save money.

Around 10% of respondents had changed the temperature of the thermostat in their fridge, with a further 2% turning their fridges off for a period of time to reduce energy bills.

Jacqui McElhiney, Head of Science at FSS, commented: “While we were expecting the results of the survey to demonstrate some behaviour changes in relation to how consumers are buying and preparing food, its concerning that so many people are adopting practices which could put them at increased risk of food poisoning.

“Perishable foods can become unsafe to eat when they are stored past their use by date, especially when they are not kept chilled. Saving energy and avoiding food waste are always priorities , but we must also remember the importance of food safety. There is a range of helpful advice and tips available for consumers on the FSS website.

“This survey has shown us that the cost of living crisis is driving consumer behaviour with the potential to negatively impact public health. As the public sector body for food safety and standards in Scotland, we are here to help protect consumers from food safety risks. While we understand that this is only one part of a much larger scale issue and appreciate the predicament that many consumers face, it makes our own role in helping the people of Scotland to avoid the risk of food poisoning even more important.”

You can access the full results of the survey here.
