WALES TO ENFORCE HOUSING MEASURES TO PROTECT BIRDS FROM AVIAN INFLUENZA

Wales are introducing a mandatory housing measure to protect poultry and captive birds from avian influenza, coming into force on 2 December 2022. From this date, it will be a legal requirement to keep birds indoors or otherwise separated from wild birds across Wales.

The Welsh government have also said that all keepers must also complete a bespoke biosecurity review of premises where birds are kept.

Since October, there have been five separate cases of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu strain in Wales, with an additional case in Cheshire, which is affecting Wales.

Wales interim chief vet Gavin Watkins said, “The latest data suggests a westward spread of avian influenza to Wales in the coming months, and increased risk of birds being infected outside, through increased viral survival times and a possible further spread in the range of wild birds carrying the virus. Having assessed the evidence, we are taking further preventative action to help protect poultry and kept birds”.

This year has seen the worst outbreak of bird flu the UK has ever seen, having a huge impact on festive turkey and goose supplies. The government has granted a temporary derogation to allow producers to slaughter their birds early, freezing them and then defrosting to be sold as fresh in the run up to Christmas.

FIRST GRADUATES FOR OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

A leadership development programme launched by total supply chain solutions specialist Oakland International in early 2021 is now celebrating the Programme’s first team graduates.

Working in partnership with the Brathay Trust in the Lake District, Oakland’s newest professional development initiative is designed to cultivate and nurture leaders of the future based around a programme of challenging practical indoor and outdoor team exercises of face-to-face workshops and interactive digital sessions, on and offline discussion groups and residential leadership development at Brathay Hall on the shores of Windermere. The programme enhances leadership performance, behaviours, builds trust, inspire collaborative working, change mindsets, boost wellbeing and increases personal resilience.

One of the team of ten employees from across the business to undertake and graduate from the programme is Oakland International Operations Manager Alex Cullen who said: “Oakland’s Brathay leadership and self-development training course aims to increase understanding and aid the emotional growth of the company’s future leaders.

“We, as the first Brathay team, are extremely grateful for the time and effort given to us. It shows a company that cares and wants to secure its future. They trust us to better ourselves and want us to develop and progress and I have really enjoyed my time on the programme, and together with my team we have shown what we are all capable of.”

Continued investment in diversified growth channels Oakland International operates 24-hours/7 days a week and is a D2C/B2C/B2B specialist in contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution, and offers brand development support for ambient, chilled and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain.

Added Alex: “The programme has brought us together as a close-knit group and we have all individually grown with a greater understanding of our roles and what effect we have on others and on the business.

“Looking ahead I want to help build those around me and identify someone to fill my shoes. I want those around me to grow and I am, as all programme graduates are, so grateful to Oakland and the current leadership team for their belief and trust. Thank you!”

Oakland International Group Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Hoare commented: “Graduation day was filled with presentations and projects, and to see each member of our team proudly receiving their individual awards was truly memorable for everyone.

“We are extremely grateful to Brathay for playing a key role in developing and shaping the first cohort of future Oakland leaders. The programme has made a huge impact on programme trainees and on Oakland’s management team, and we’re now looking forward to what the future holds and to welcoming our next batch of trainees ready to take on the leadership training challenge.”

BRCGS AA accredited and a double Queen’s Award for Enterprise recipient for International Trade and Sustainable Development, Oakland has taken the first step to become B Corp certified, joining the fast-growing movement of using business as a force for good, and is working towards becoming the first business within their sector to achieve net-zero.

CALL FOR INFORMATION ON TRIANGULAR TRADE OF POAO

Members will recall that back in March 2022 Defra issued guidance on triangular trade of products of animal origin (POAO) and STAMNI.

Triangular trade is when a product is imported from one country into Great Britain and then re-exported to another.

The guidance articulated the EU’s interpretation of the rules around this type of movement, given the risk of refusal of consignments at EU Border Control Posts (BCPs).

However, despite the UK Government pressing for clarification at SPS Trade Specialised Committees there still seems to be questions around how the EU’s interpretation is consistent with obligations under the Trade Cooperation Agreement (TCA).

At a recent meeting, Defra have once again promised to try and get clarification, but they really need up to date information on what the current picture looks like.

Are members still experiencing issues with triangular trade and if so, what impact has it had on business or is it the case that triangular trade has ceased?

Any feedback or examples would be most appreciated and will help facilitate discussions with the EU. Please send any information you are willing to share through to deniserion@bfff.co.uk and we will ensure it is passed on in complete confidence.

PUKKA SHAKES UP FROZEN AISLE WITH NEW BAKES & SAUSAGE ROLLS RANGE

Pukka, the nation’s number one in chilled pies[1], is bringing warmth, excitement and full on flavour to frozen fixtures nationwide with a new range of Frozen Bakes & Sausage Rolls.

The new launch marks a significant expansion for the much-loved British brand’s frozen portfolio, as it sets it sights on delivering quality, taste and inspiration to the category – presenting retailers with an unmissable incremental growth opportunity.

In addition to launching a new frozen format for its popular Sausage and Vegan Sausage Rolls, the brand has introduced its first ever frozen Bakes range including recipes inspired by some of its most popular pie products, in the form of Pukka’s Frozen Steak Bake, Frozen Chicken Bake and Frozen Vegan Applewood® & Onion Bake. The range also comprises a brand-new recipe for Pukka – a Frozen Sausage & Bean Bake combining baked beans, Pukka’s signature sausage meat and gooey melted cheese all wrapped up in a golden pastry case.

The range launches hot on the heels of Pukka’s successful expansion into Food To Go last year with its chilled Handheld range. Launched in September 2021, the range already boasts the number one branded slice on the market[2], and has helped Pukka contribute more than half of total savoury pastry growth[3].

“Pukka has been lovingly baking pies for the people of Britain for almost 60 years and – in doing so – has become part of the fabric of the nation,” explains Isaac Fisher, Managing Director at Pukka. “Trusted by the people of Britain to deliver full on flavour, taste and quality, we’re continuing our mission of delivering real food for real people living real lives with our brand-new Frozen Bakes & Sausage Rolls.

“Now a leading force within Savoury Pastry, we’re confident that by disrupting frozen aisles and adding taste inspiration we will achieve similar sales success to that of our Handheld range, driving significant category growth in the process.”

Pukka is already well-versed in launching innovative NPD which delivers on both taste and quality. In fact, Pukka’s Frozen Bakes & Sausage Rolls have been carefully crafted following consumer research which saw the brand outperform the category leader – with over 92% of shoppers saying they’d buy a Pukka Steak Bake[4]. Coupled with the fact that Sausage & Bean, Chicken, and Steak were found to be some of the most sought-after recipes[5] , the range is described by Fisher as set to help retailers “tap into shopper demand and drive incremental sales in the process”.

“Aside from that sought after distinctively-Pukka taste, convenience is also key,” adds Fisher. “Cooking straight from the freezer in under 30 minutes means the range is perfect for a whole host of eating occasions – from midweek meals to work-from-home lunches and even breakfast, with our Sausage & Bean Bake.

“By launching Frozen Bakes & Sausage Rolls inspired by some of our most popular recipes, we will turn negative perceptions of frozen food on its head and drive even more shoppers to the frozen aisle by offering a range which ticks the box when it comes to quality, affordability and full-on flavour.”

The new range come as Pukka posts another phenomenal year of sales, which are up +24%[6], meaning there’s no better time to stock-up to drive sales growth in your freezers.

Pukka’s NEW Frozen Bakes & Sausage Rolls are available in Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco stores now, and will continue to roll out more widely nationwide across multiple grocery, convenience and wholesale. Packaging is fully-recyclable.

Nationwide crackdown on drink and drug driving will see all 43 UK police forces step up efforts to catch motorists flouting the law!

Today (21st November 2022) sees the launch of Operation Limit, a nationwide crackdown on drink and drug driving which will see all of 43 UK police forces increase efforts to catch drink and drug drivers.

The 6-week long campaign which coincides with the World Cup and Christmas period is being coordinated by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and National Roads Policing Operations and Intelligence (NRPOII).

It overarching objective is to reduce serious injury and death and disrupt criminal activity on the UK road network by targeting those who engage in high-harm behaviour, specifically driving a vehicle whilst under the influence of drink and or drugs.

The initiative comes as statistics recently released by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) indicate that 206 drug and drink driving offences are committed every day in England and Wales – a total of 75,159 offences.

Further, the newly published data highlights that convictions for drug driving have more than trebled over the past five years from 7,683 in 2017, to 27,962 by the end of 2021.

Worryingly, there has also been a 13% growth in drink driving cases in the past year, with 33,742 motorists appearing in court in 2021.

Ean Lewin, Managing Director of D.tec International, the UK’s sole distributor of DrugWipe, the global leader for police roadside driver drug screening, used by all 43 police forces in England, Wales and Scotland as well as hundreds of corporate clients said;

“It is expected that statistics for 2022, which will not be available until midway through next year, will show that drug driving is now more prevalent in society than drink driving.

In our role working with all 43 police forces, we get to see the enthusiasm of the front line in trying to minimise the dangers and harm caused by the selfish and irresponsible act of driving under the influence.

I have spent 26 years tirelessly working to improve safety on our roads and applaud this nationwide effort and particularly the emphasis being placed around the need to capture accurate data which is vital to highlight the magnitude of the problem and convince Police and Crime Commissioners and the government to better support roads policing”.

D.tec International is the sole UK distributor for the Securetec range of instant readout disposable drug detection products, DrugWipe and DrugID. These are used extensively in the UK, Europe and around the world.

DrugWipe is the global leader for police roadside driver drug screening and is also used extensively for safety critical employee drug testing. D.tec supplies all 43 police forces in England, Wales and most recently Scotland, as well as hundreds of corporate clients, from household names to many small but safety conscious businesses and organisations.

D.tec is a leading workplace distributor for Drager police specification breathalysers. These market leading alcohol testing devices are used around the world.
