Wendy Comments: “As the custodian of a business, I believe that my role is to support and empower the people I work with to do their jobs brilliantly every day. This enables us as a business to deliver success through providing excellent quality products and experiences for our customers and the end consumers.”

“My focus will be to continue to steer the business through the challenging economic climate and deliver on the current business strategy, whilst looking at new opportunities for the future.”

Lantmännen Unibake UK’s vision is around providing pleasure through food and creating millions of smiling tummies. This is a vision shared by Wendy who will use her category knowledge, industry experience, customer centric focus, and passion for food and people to continue to build upon this.

Tim Robinson, Chief Strategy Officer and COO BA at Lantmännen Unibake, comments “As I join the Global team based at the group’s Headquarters in Copenhagen and take on this new challenge, I am pleased to be leaving my previous UK role in the very capable hands of Wendy Smith.”

“Wendy is no stranger to the industry, its opportunities and challenges and I have every confidence in her ability to lead the UK business forward. The UK business will continue to be an important part of the business area I will remain responsible for in my continued role as COO Business Area UK, US & Asia Pacific. I very much look forward to the new growth plans coming from the UK team, and will continue to be an ambassador for the fantastic business and people that I have had the honour to lead.”

“I have no doubt that Wendy will enjoy the role as much as I have and I look forward to supporting her alongside the rest of the team.”

SUMMARY OF RESPONSES TO PRN CONSULTATION

Government has now published a summary of responses to the consultation on Reforms to the Packaging Waste Recycling Note (PRN) and Packaging Waste Export Recycling Note (PERN) Systems.

The aim of the consultation was to seek views on several technical and administrative amendments to the way in which the PRN/PERN system operates. These were intended to address some of the issues identified in the current system, including PRN/PERN price volatility, a lack of transparency, and the potential for fraudulent issuing of PRNs/PERNs.

The main policy actions by the governments are:

  • monthly reporting of reprocessing and export data by reprocessors and exporters
  • monthly price and revenue data reporting by reprocessors and exporters
  • amendments to the reporting categories for the revenue received from the sale ofPRNs by reprocessors and exporters
  • a competence test for reprocessors, exporters and Compliance Scheme operators

Defra and the devolved administrations will continue to monitor this approach to the PRN and PERN systems and will review again in 2026 to 2027.

The responses to the consultation, which ran from 26th March to 21st May 2022, can be viewed here.

CALL TO MEMBERS: COULD YOU HOST A DEFRA SITE VISIT?

To assist in the understanding of the complexities of the food supply chain we are calling on BFFF members to ask:

Would you be willing to host a 2-3 hour visit of Defra officials?

Recent visits to other manufacturing sites have proven invaluable in the development of such things as the Digital Assistance Scheme.

All offers would be most welcome, although the more complex the operation the better!

This is our opportunity to ensure that any systems put in place really are fit for purpose so please contact deniserion@bfff.co.uk should you be interested!

SWINE FEVER RISK HIGHLIGHTED AFTER ILLEGAL MEAT IMPORTS DISCOVERED AT DOVER

A shocking discovery of illegal meat in lorries was discovered at Dover Port earlier this month, raising concerns for the threat of African swine fever (ASF) hitting the UK.

Officials from Dover Port Health Authority (DPHA) inspected 22 lorries and found illegal meat imports in 21 of those vehicles during a 24 hour period, which included 2.5t of illegal pork products.

The inspected lorries originated from Romania, Moldova, Ukraine and Poland and included raw animal products loosely stored in carrier bags and tissue without temperate control, refrigeration or labelling. Some products were also found in holdalls, taped up cardboard boxes and sealed cool boxes, which were destined to be sold at markets and independent stores in Britain.

From September 1, it has been illegal to bring pork or pork products weighing over 2kg into the country unless they are produced to the EU’s commercial standards.

Dover MP Natalie Elphicke said “There are up to 10,000 vehicle movements across the channel each day. It is clear that the risk of maggoty meat, meat of unknown origin, which often means horse or other illegal meat, rotting meat due to the lack of temperature controls, as well as fresh blood dripping on to other products, is of real concern.”

Elphicke also highlighted the ASF risk, citing government warnings that the disease ‘poses a significant risk to our pig herd and out long-term ability to export pork and pork products around the globe.’

These findings illustrate just how vital the new sanitary and phytosanitary checks are which Defra instigated in response to the threat of ASF entering the UK. The more we can prevent the movement of contaminated meat (both illegal and via travellers bringing in food) the better our chance of avoiding an outbreak.

DEFRA CONFIRM DEROGATION ALLOWING CERTAIN POULTRY PRODUCTS TO BE SOLD AS DEFROSTED

Due to the significant impact the Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak is having on many poultry keepers and farmers in England, Defra have announced that they will support in principle the freezing down of certain poultry products and the subsequent sale of them as ‘defrosted’ in the run up to Christmas.

This will mean that producers and processors have the option of slaughtering their birds early, which will reduce the risk of AI infection between now and the normal slaughtering time.

This will only apply to whole birds or crown of turkey, duck and goose, capons, and 2-3-bird roasts, as well as stuffed whole and crown of turkey, goose, and duck. No other poultry products such as chicken or processed products are included in the derogation.

Birds can be defrosted for sale to consumers between the dates of 28th November and 31st December 2022 only and should not be sold beyond this date. The use of a ‘use by’ date of 31st December, at the latest, will ensure this.

In compliance with food labelling regulations (particularly EU Regulation 1169/2011 (FIC) ) the designation “defrosted” must be prominent on the front of pack (principal field of vision). There must also, where appropriate, be in-store signage and online information for consumers.

The FSA’s view is that this flexibility does not in itself present any increased food safety risks to consumers, provided that, in accordance with food law:

  • industry freezes and thaws the product under suitable conditions;
  • these conditions are monitored;
  • there are measures in place to ensure that product sold as chilled has been

thoroughly defrosted;

  • the shelf life for defrosted product is appropriate.

Trading Standards Officers are being asked to apply a flexible and pragmatic approach in respect to this and Food Business Operators should consult with their Primary Authority or Trading Standards Officer in making these changes.

We would like to remind BFFF members that we have a series of co-ordinated Primary Authority partnerships with several different regulatory authorities. These include Cambridgeshire County Council Trading Standards and South Cambridgeshire District Council Environmental Health. If you or businesses wish to discuss this latest announcement or the challenges with Avian Influenza, please let deniserion@bfff.co.uk know and we can arrange that for you.

Note: This derogation is for England and is awaiting confirmation in Wales. The Scottish Government are also considering the situation and should be communicating their decision shortly. It will not be available for affected products in NI due to the NI Protocol.

BRCGS WEBINAR ON CHANGES FROM FOOD SAFETY ISSUE 8 TO ISSUE 9

BRC Global Standards (BRCGS) are running a FREE webinar, aimed at all food quality and regulatory compliance professionals, which will explore some of the changes that have been introduced into the Food Safety Standard Issue 9.

The standard was published in August 2022 and is due to be audited against from 1st February 2023.

There have been amendments bringing the standard in line with updated GFSI requirements. Some of the requirements that have been updated are associated with internal audits, root cause analysis, preventative actions, and incident management. There is an increased emphasis and focus in these areas, alongside product safety culture to ensure the effective implementation of good manufacturing practices.

All those who register will receive a complimentary recording after the live event, so it is worth registering even if you are unable to attend on the day.
