UK ANNOUNCES NEW ECONOMIC SANCTION AGAINST RUSSIA – SIGN UP TO WEBINARS FOR FURTHER DETAIL!

The UK has today (15/03/22) announced new economic sanctions against Russia.

The new sanctions will deny Russia and Belarus access to Most Favoured Nation tariffs for hundreds of their exports and ban UK exports of high-end luxury goods to both countries. The full press release can be viewed here.

Please note – the press release refers to white fish, but we have been informed by Defra that it will be ALL fish from Russia which fall under the commodity chapter codes 03 and 16. However, what is still unclear is whether that means fish directly from Russia only or fish of Russian origin coming via, for example China, Germany, Poland.

The timing of these new sanctions, which impose 35% tariff on top of any existing tariff, is also to be confirmed. We are told that regulation will come into force sometime next week after it has been laid in Parliament, but a definite date is yet to be communicated. We are also unsure at what point the sanctions will be imposed – at the time goods are customs cleared or will it be at the ‘stroke of midnight’ meaning anything still on the water will become liable.

The EU have already announced a barrage of sanctions which will come into effect once published in the EU Official Journal later today. We are not sure as yet if this will align with the UK approach and include tariffs on Russian goods.

In addition to the above, UK Export Finance has announced it will no longer issue any new guarantees, loans and insurance for exports to Russia and Belarus, whilst retaining £3.5 billion of financial support for trade to Ukraine. You can view the press release here.

BRITISH FROZEN FOOD FEDERATION LAUNCHES FROZEN FOOD WEEK COMPETITION AT IFE

The British Frozen Food Federation is celebrating a return to in-person exhibitions by running an a-pea-ling on-stand competition at IFE (International Food & Drink Event) in March.

To win a starring role for their product in the British Frozen Food Federation’s upcoming Frozen Food Week campaign, visitors are invited to ‘guess how many peas are in the freezer’. There’s also a 10% discount on federation membership to be won.

Announced in the President’s speech at the British Frozen Food Federation annual luncheon in November 2021, the inaugural Frozen Food Week will take place in September 2022. Using social media as the main platform to engage with stakeholders, the sustainability credentials of frozen food will be promoted with reduced food waste, better availability and carbon savings as key topics.

Harry Hinks, digital marketing manager at the British Frozen Food Federation, said: “Frozen food has been re-evaluated by consumers due to the challenges brought about by the pandemic. We’ve seen stratospheric category growth and are looking forward to meeting face-to-face with people to discuss the sustainability, quality and value credentials of frozen food in advance of our first Frozen Food Week.

“With many in-person events cancelled over the last two years, there’s a real feeling of excitement and eagerness to get out there.  We hope to see lots of people on stand to try and guess the number of peas in the freezer!”

The British Frozen Food Federation will be exhibiting at IFE (International Food & Drink Event) from 21 – 23 March 2022 on stand 4525. The competition will also run on social media so that anyone unable to attend in person can take part. Join in on Twitter or LinkedIn.

ENGINEERED FIRE SAFETY SOLUTION FOR MAJOR UK COLD STORE BUSINESS

Patol, working with PWP, is protecting the sites of one of the UK’s largest providers of cold storage, blast freezing and tempering services to the food industry. The project saw the use of Securiton Aspirating Smoke Detection (ASD) and Patol’s Resettable LHDC (Linear Heat Detection Cable) and controllers.

Magnavale is widely recognised as a vitally important cog in the food supply chain. With its three facilities in Scunthorpe, Warrington and Chesterfield, the company offers over 1.95 million square feet of warehouse space and over 200,000 pallet spaces. With the facilities operating at temperatures as low as -20°C, they are a challenging environment in terms of fire protection.

Nottingham based PWP Building Services were appointed to undertake the project through their dedicated Fire & Security Division. Gavin Clarke, Head of Fire Safety at PWP, comments – “The need to effectively protect wide open areas plus the challenges that such low temperatures obviously bring were important considerations in deciding on the most effective fire safety solution. A further factor was the desire to provide early warning with the focus on minimising downtime and ensuring business continuity given the just-in-time service offered by Magnavale and the importance of food security throughout the supply chain.”

The chosen fire safety engineered solution was based on the Securiton range of ASD detectors, supplemented by Patol’s resettable analogue Linear Heat Detection Cable (LHDC) which was employed in the voids and washdown areas. One of the factors in selecting Patol as a partner in the project was the company’s extensive experience in providing cold store solutions. For Magnavale, more than 80 ASD detectors plus the associated air sampling pipework were installed across the sites. The design included heating sampling points to prevent any ice build-up given the sub-zero temperatures of many of the buildings.

The signals from the ASD detectors, along with those from more than 30 LHDC systems, are all routed to a central controller which feeds into the sites’ main fire control panels. This is linked to a CO2 suppression system in the main electrical panels. This is a ‘double-knock’ coincidence two stage alert system which allows Magnavale personnel time to investigate the cause of an alarm before the extinguishant is automatically released.

The ASD detectors employed at the Scunthorpe and Chesterfield sites were a mix of the ASD 535, ASD 532 and ASD 531 panels. The ASD 535 is the flagship detector and designed for use in medium to large scale areas, with an ambient temperature range reaching as low as -30°C, making it particularly suited to cold store applications. The ASD 532 and 531 detectors are more suited to smaller areas, giving PWP the opportunity to address the differing needs of the site’s numerous buildings with the appropriate model.

Based on the success of the Scunthorpe and Chesterfield sites, PWP is now adopting the same approach in an extension at Magnavale’s Warrington facility. This will see the capacity increase from the existing 130,000 square feet of cold storage warehousing space to 164,000 square feet, with a fire safety system which will reflect the new layout. This is part of a significant expansion programme by Magnavale with the business investing not only in its existing sites but also adding new ones to its network of cold stores.

ICELAND ROLLS OUT PLASTIC FILM RECYCLING BINS ACROSS ALL THE FOOD WAREHOUSE STORES

The Food Warehouse – part of the Iceland Foods Group – has fitted plastic recycling bins in all its stores to help its customers recycle plastic film they are not able to at home.

The supermarket has launched the new bins across more than 140 stores across the country following a successful trial in 13 of its stores that received positive customer feedback.

The new bins, are at the front of each store, have been specifically setup to allow customers to recycle flexible plastic film items including carrier bags, bread bags, produce bags and magazine wraps, which typically cannot be recycled at home.

The bin roll out has come ahead WRAP’s campaign dubbed ‘Repeat the Cycle’, that will encourage the recycling of plastic bags and wrappings such as bags for frozen peas, bread bags, and the wrapping around packets of toilet rolls at front of store locations.

Currently, flexible plastic packaging represents more than a fifth of all UK consumer plastic packaging, but only 6% is currently recycled.

Richard Walker, Managing Director of Iceland, said: “Tackling unnecessary plastic production and plastic waste continues to remain the priority for Iceland and The Food Warehouse but we are also keen to offer our customers a convenient solution for recycling the flexible plastics they are not able to at home.

“Following a successful trial period in some of our The Food Warehouse stores, we’re pleased to have fitted these bins across the country following positive feedback and high usage from our customers. The additional bins will ensure that even more flexible plastic is recycled reliably and help contribute to a circular economy.”

The bins have been fitted as part of Iceland’s wider commitment to eliminate plastic packaging from its own-label products and drive down plastic waste.

OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL NAMED AMONGST MIDLANDS’ 100 FASTEST GROWING COMPANIES

Total supply chain solution provider Oakland International has been confirmed as one of the Midlands 100 fastest growing companies.

Insider’s Growth 100 index ranks 100 of the fastest-growing companies who have a registered office in the region and amongst several other factors have increased turnover by more than 18 per cent annually over a four-year period and focusing on companies demonstrating growth in the last year and with over £1m turnover in the first year.

Oakland International Co-Founder and Group CEO Dean Attwell stated: “We are delighted to be recognised as a Top 100 growth business in the Midlands. Oakland has invested heavily in new facilities and new channels of distribution including internet fulfilment which has delivered strong growth during the pandemic especially. Our core business has grown substantially over the years with customers tuning into the opportunities of a single-source solution for multi-temperature and multi-channel supply chain.”

An environmentally minded temperature-controlled international supply chain solution provider, Oakland International is BRCGS AA rated and operates 24-hours/7 days a week, a D2C/B2C/B2B specialist in contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution and a brand development support provider for ambient, chilled, and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain.

With companies on the list described as remarkable, resilient and reliable, Redditch located Oakland International is ranked 92nd with 18.84% compound annual growth, a turnover of £38.2m and pre-tax profit of £2.4m. Since launching in 1998, the company has grown significantly to a group of businesses which expect to break the £100m turnover by the end of 2022 through core activities which encompass supply chain and product consolidation, transport and customs clearance.

Added Dean: “Maintaining margin is a constant challenge as we face rising cost pressures and a competitive market; we are challenging ourselves to drive further efficiencies and marginal gains throughout our business with initiatives ranging from robotics, process re-engineering and marginal gains from investments in renewable energy and improved energy efficiency, waste reduction and transport optimisation.

“Oakland is positioned for further rapid growth in the UK and Ireland through core business models and new initiatives which are intentionally disruptive in the business-to-business multi-temperature parcel delivery arena.”

EVERYTHING YOU LOVE ABOUT MEADOW VALE BUT VEGAN

You won’t believe it’s not chicken… Introducing Meadow Vale’s Original Vegan Chicken Strips.

Made from pea protein to deliver a succulent and meaty bite, Meadow Vale’s Original Vegan Chick’n Strip give you a meat-free alternative to add to your menu.

We created the Vegan Chick’n Strip to meet the current surge in demand for high quality meat and dairy alternatives in the foodservice industry. A whopping 92% of plant-based meals consumed in the UK were eaten by non-vegans last year, so we made sure that no matter of dietary requirements, your customers won’t be disappointed.

Why strips? Why now?

Simple, versatility. Chicken strips have proven to be best sellers for fast food chicken products in the last year. A strip can be used across a menu from a juicy chicken burger to a tasty Thai fusion dish, meaning the need to buy varying vegan products is eliminated and costs are kept low.

It has taken our Product Development team sometime to create a Vegan product that meets the demanding quality standards of Meadow Vale Foods, but it has definitely been worth the wait. Nigel O’Donnell, Meadow Vale Foods’ Managing Director added ‘Feedback from our wholesalers and end-users has been fantastic. Our product analysis and customer testing has shown the quality of the Original Vegan Chick’n Strip is unrivalled’,

The secret

The aim here is not to influence choice, but to offer an alternative runs parallel with our chicken for high quality taste, texture and appeal. We figured out what makes Meadow Vale chicken so delicious, and recreated it using pea protein.

High in protein and a great source of Iron, pea protein is a great fit for any diet, as it is naturally vegan and hypoallergenic. Like many of our tender chicken strips, the protein is hand cut then coated in our signature Meadow Vale batter, making it extremely difficult to separate the meat-free from the meat. Trust us, we’ve tried!

Meat free and stress free!

If you’re looking for convenience, you’re in the right place.

The Chick’n Strips will help the caterer save time, waste and money by offering quick cook times in a variety of methods, straight from the freezer. The quality is all in the strip, simply heat and serve!

What’s more, the product performs great when hot held; the coating will stay crunchy for longer while the core stays succulent for up to two hours… perfect for takeaway and delivery.
