UPDATE ON CERTIFICATION FOR EXPORTS OF FISH & FISHERY PRODUCTS TO INDIA

As many of you will be aware, it was announced earlier this year that an APHA-provided EHC would be required to export fish to India from 1st November 2022.

Please note that the implementation of this requirement has now been delayed until 1st January 2023. 

DEFRA has communicated the fact that the 1st of January deadline is likely to apply to the time of consignments arriving in India, not the date of signature.

ICELAND IS ON A MISSION TO SAVE HOT DINNERS STARTING WITH ‘THE BIG COOKER SWITCH OFF CHALLENGE’

Iceland Foods boss, Richard Walker, says ‘we must do what we can to save hot dinners’ which includes ditching the use of cookers and switching to more energy efficient appliances, as Iceland’s research[1] revealed that over half of Brits (53%) plan on either reducing or cutting out hot meals completely in the coming months.

The study shows that over one quarter (27%) of Brits say they don’t see any alternative to cutting out hot meals because otherwise they simply won’t be able to afford their energy bills.

This figure is nearly double for those in the lowest income group, which is £15,000 or less, of which over 40% gave this answer.

And it seems that the younger population are more willing to take the hit, with 19% saying they would cut them out completely, compared to only 7% of those over 55.

However, an overwhelming 90% of Brits are feeling ‘concerned’ about the impact of rising energy bills, and only 5% are feeling at all relaxed about the situation.

This anxiousness is filtering through to households on the lowest income the most, with over two-thirds (65%) of those on a salary of £15,000 or less saying they’re ‘very concerned’. In comparison, only four in ten (39%) of those earning over £65,000 gave this answer.

The supermarket recently announced its sales of 4L Tower air fryers for an incredibly low-cost price of £35. The products, which launched in stores and online on Saturday 8th October, were snapped off shelves in less than a week and Iceland is hoping these customers can use their air fryers to take on The Big Cooker Switch Off Challenge.

The supermarket is especially keen to do this following their findings that, when asking the British public whether they felt like they had a good understanding of the benefits of using low-cost appliances, nearly half (46.15%) either answered ‘no’ or ‘somewhat, but they would like to know more’.

Richard Walker, Managing Director at Iceland Foods, said: “Choosing between heating and eating shouldn’t be a decision anyone ever has to make, we must do what we can to save hot dinners. This is why we are asking our customers to join us in The Big Cooker Switch Off Challenge, so they can see just how easy it is to solely use appliances that are going to save them money. It’s going to be these small changes that could mean having a regular hot meal this winter.”

Iceland customers can pledge to switch off their cookers for an entire week, starting from 31st October, via this link and the first 1,000 customers to sign up will receive a £5 voucher via email, to spend on one online shop at Iceland.

AVIAN INFLUENZA UPDATE: MANDATORY HOUSING MEASURE FOR ALL BIRDS

The government have announced a mandatory housing measure for all poultry and captive birds, that will be introduced to all areas of England from 00:01 on Monday 7th November, following a decision by the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer.

This new housing measure legally requires all bird keepers to keep their birds indoors and to follow stringent biosecurity measures to help protect their flock from the disease, regardless of their type or size.

The UK has faced its largest ever outbreak of avian influenza over the last year, with more than 200 cases confirmed since late October 2021. The introduction of this latest housing order comes after the disease was detected at over 70 premises since the beginning of October, in addition to reports in wild birds.

HEALTHY SUSTAINABLE DIETS: DRIVING CHANGE

IGD published a report on driving change for healthy sustainable diets on 11th October. The report looks at how the food industry can drive healthier and more sustainable diets in the UK.

Since 2019, IGD have been conducting real-life behaviour change trials with retailers, testing what works and what doesn’t. The research helps the industry build knowledge around how to shift diets, accelerate the pace of change in food retail and healthy policy.

The latest report highlights the findings from three real-life behavioural change trials:

  • Does boosting the value of Healthy Start vouchers help low-income families improve their diets?
  • Should plant-based products be sold alongside meat?
  • Do promotions on fruit and vegetables drive long-term behaviour change?

This report is second to the report released last year, which has resulted in sustainable diets becoming embedded into the government food strategy. Multiple government departments have joined forces to fund research on driving positive behaviour change for health and sustainability.

Now with the additional challenges we face due to the cost-of-living crisis, the urgency of action has been amplified. High inflation is causing a decline in real incomes and health is failing down the priority list for many struggling households. For some low-income households, the cost of travel will limit their ability to shop around and the cost of cooking a meal may become a deciding factor on what, how often and when to eat.

In previous recessions, there has been an increase in levels of obesity and malnutrition, so we must act now to ensure health disparities do not worsen.

COCKTAILS FOR A VERY MERRY FIZZ-MAS

Pornstar Martini

 

Ingredients:

x1 handful Premium Ice

x1 measure vodka

x1 measure Passoa

x1/2 measure sugar syrup

x1/2 measure lime juice

x1 measure pineapple juice

x1 measure prosecco

Garnish: passion fruit half

 

Method:

  1. Add the ice and all the other ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake hard and strain into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Place a passionfruit half on top and it’s ready to serve. If you want to go all out, serve a shot of prosecco on the side.

 

Pink Grapefruit Fizz

Ingredients:

x2 Super Cubes

x50ml vodka

x75ml grapefruit juice

x25ml prosecco

Garnish: grapefruit slice

 

Method:

  1. Add ice, vodka and grapefruit juice to a jug and stir well.
  2. Top up with prosecco.
  3. Pour into a glass over a Super Cube and garnish with grapefruit!

 

Raspberry Martini Fizz

Ingredients:

x1 handful Premium Ice cubes

x1 measure Martini Rosso

x1 measure gin

x1/2 teaspoon icing sugar

x1 handful raspberries

Top up: prosecco

Method:

  1. Add the ice, Martini Rosso and gin to a cocktail shaker and shake for 30 seconds.
  2. Add the icing sugar to a glass and strain in the martini mix.
  3. Top with prosecco, add the raspberries and serve.

 

Berry Spritz

 

Ingredients: 

x3 Super Cubes

x1 & 1/2 measures prosecco

x1 handful berries

x1/2 lime

Juice of lime

Top up: soda water

Garnish: lime slice

 

Method:

  1. Muddle the berries with the lime juice in a glass.
  2. Add 3 Super Cubes and pour in the prosecco.
  3. Top with soda water, stir and serve.
