Health & Safety Conference Speakers

Helen Atkinson
I am a Senior Environmental Health Officer and Primary Authority Account Manager at Wakefield Council. I deal with Environmental Health issues for our Primary Authority partners including The British Frozen Food Federation. My partner businesses include the logistics/distribution sector, leisure and hospitality and food manufacturers. I began my career in retail before moving to logistics/distribution. I completed my NEBOSH Diploma in 1996 before Environmental Science at Salford University to become an EHO.

Babette Clarke
Babette has eight years of experience in the modern slavery sector, supporting survivors of exploitation. She holds a Master's degree in Gender and Law and has previously volunteered for the Home Office's Multi-Agency Assurance Panels. As Training Manager at Hestia, she equips frontline staff and businesses to tackle this critical issue. Hestia has supported over 7,000 survivors since 2011 under the UK Home Office's Victim Care Contract.

Shaun Lundy
Dr Shaun Lundy is the Quality Assurance and Strategy Director at Tetra, a Chartered Fellow of IOSH, and a Chartered Building Engineer with over 25 years of experience across various industry sectors and academia. He has collaborated with regulators, trade associations, and professional bodies on key issues such as myth-busting, ethics, competence, and leadership, demonstrating his commitment to advancing professional standards and practice. Shaun also serves as Chair of the IOSH Construction Group and as IOSH Vice President.

Steve Hough
Steve joined SoloProtect in 2016 and is Managing Director, bringing two decades of expertise from RAC and VW Group. Passionate about safety, he led the development of innovative touchscreen devices, ensuring optimal protection for lone workers. His commitment drives SoloProtect's mission to safeguard workers globally.

Andy Cartwright
Andy has 30+ years’ experience as an instructor specialising in workplace transport and holds multiple professional qualifications, including CFIOSH.
As Mentor’s Technical Manager, he provides expert guidance on our courses, advice on regulatory updates, training solutions, and more.
Andy is Vice Chairman of AITT, represents AITT on the Accrediting Bodies Association, and assists the HSE as an expert witness on forklift accidents.

Steven Harrison
Steven is a regulatory lawyer with over twenty years' experience of providing advice and defence services to individuals and organisations in relation to manslaughter and health and safety investigations by the Police and Health and Safety Executive. He also handles cases investigated by local authorities, the CQC and Environment Agency.

Chris Brown
A chartered member of the institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH). A 18001 lead auditor, with experience in certified management systems. Qualifications include a NEBOSH diploma, Certificate in risk management and an IEMA certificate, supported by a degree in environmental analysis. Qualifications have also been completed in fire and construction safety.

Jason Burt
Over 30 years’ legal experience of representing private and public limited companies, local authorities and other government-related organisations, charities, and insurers. Frequently presents at training seminars for fellow legal professionals, health and safety practitioners and insurance industry personnel, giving guidance/commentary on corporate manslaughter, social care, occupiers’ liability, and regulatory reform.

Kate Joy is our National Business Development Manager with 9 years of experience at Diphex Solutions Limited - experts in chemical first aid and decontamination.
Her expertise spans chemical first aid, decontamination protocols, and workplace safety solutions, making her a trusted advisor to organisations managing corrosive and irritant substances. Kate is passionate about education and practical safety measures, ensuring that teams are well-equipped to respond effectively to chemical incidents.

Technical Conference Speakers

Graham Christy
I have worked for the past 11 years as Group Technical Manager at Froneri UK Ice Cream Limited with the overall responsibility for the Quality, Safety and Legality of all our products we manufacture within our 3 UK sites, We manufacture well known Ice Cream Brands such as Nestle, Cadburys and Kellys of Cornwall as well as working with all the major Private Label and Foodservices customers manufacturing their branded products. In addition to my role within Froneri I am Chairman of the FDF Ice Cream Association and Vice Chairman of EuroGlace a well-established European Ice Cream Association made up with members from the Nordics to Italy and in between. I currently chair the BFFF Technical Expert Group, which I have been involved with for nearly 11 years bringing the challenges from Ice Cream into the wide ranging debates of this team.
Prior to the world of Ice Cream I have worked for Greencore and Kerry Foods, with experiences in Sandwiches, Ready Meals, Cooked Meats, Ambient Cooking Sauces to name a few.

Tina Potter
Coming from industry, I joined the civil service in 1999, and have a breadth of food safety experiences, from my entry to the civil service as a meat inspector, onto enforcement and project management role, performance management and leadership roles, food crime and joined the world of incident management in 2013, being seconded to Dyfed Powys Police to support the response to Horsemeat incident, before joining the incident team in 2017.
Important to me - to make sure industry and other stakeholders have the right information at the right time to make the right decision to the benefit of consumer protection. Keen to work with businesses and other organisations to prevent incidents, don't leave it to a crises to get to know me and my team. Where we can't prevent, lets minimise the impact for consumer and businesses and maintain trust in the UK food system.
I lead on the operational delivery for management of foodborne disease, Malicious tampering incidents and incident that require inquests, too many of these are allergy related.
Food safety is who I am, not just what I do!

Robyn Smyth
As Senior Policy Lead for the Food Hypersensitivity Team, I lead stakeholder engagement and Codex workstreams. Prior to this, I served as a Stakeholder Engagements Officer in the Incidents and Resilience Division.
Before joining the Food Standards Agency in 2019, I spent nearly a decade in the food industry, with roles ranging from running night labs for species testing to launching new ranges in sous vide, ready meals, and fresh meat. My experience with both large manufacturers and top retailers gave me a great foundation to the food industry which is invaluable for my work in the FSA.

Alison Johnson
Alison Johnson is the Managing Director and founder of Food Forensics a UKAS accredited testing laboratory and solution provider. After working for 15 years in the meat industry from farm to fork, Alison Identified a gap in the market and set up Food Forensics in 2012 to provide solutions for authenticity testing in food. The business has developed into a leader in its field providing testing, insight, and intelligence solutions across the food sector to manage food risk and provide brand protection.

Dr Amer Rashid
I hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Pakistan and an MSc in Meat Science & Technology from Bristol University, UK and other certification and auditing qualifications.
One of my most notable achievements is leading the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Halal Compliance Training (CEHCT). This initiative brought together industry leaders, academics, and theologians to address the growing demand of conscious consumers in the UK and expanding economies, within a halal market valued at approximately $3.5 trillion. Additionally, I am the founder and Technical Director of the Halal Certification Organisation (HCO), a distinguished halal certifier serving the UK and Europe. Beyond this, I serve as a trustee of a charitable organization and as a non-executive director for a group of lamb and sheep abattoirs.

Anthony Baldock
I have been working in Environmental Health and Port Health since 1987. During my career I have worked as Chief Officer in West Sussex, London and Kent and am now a Director in Ashford. I have extensive experience of imported food controls and working with the Food and Veterinary Office of the EU prior to BREXIT and have attended many Better Training Safer Food events in Europe. I was responsible for opening the new Border Control Post situated in Ashford working closely with DEFRA and the Cabinet Office. I am the chairman of the Association of Port Health Authorities and a member of Charted Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) Expert Port Health Panel. I am also a Chartered Fellow of the CIEH and regularly present at national and international conferences regarding port health.

David May
David leads on product development, customer trials, and grant programs. He has over 35 years’ experience in temperature-controlled food supply chains, Quality Assurance and consumer research. This included 23 years at Tesco, and 10 years as head of QA for fresh food. He was Deputy Director of the Lincoln Institute of Agri-Food Technology and has a BSc in Horticulture, (University of Reading).

Dr Jeff Banks
Dr. Jeff Banks is a food quality and safety professional with more than 45 years’ experience. He holds a degree in Applied Biology and a PhD in Food Microbiology. He was Microbiology Department Head at Campden Food Research fpr 13 years. He has deep knowledge and experience in all segments of the food processing sector. He has assessed or audited over 1200 plants in over 80 countries and specialises in root cause analysis and fixing problems.

Graham Robson
After almost a decade of supporting SME business owners in my role of Business Growth consultant, I joined the leadership team of Emissis. There were two main reasons for this decision: the culture of the organisation its values, purpose and vision are aligned to my own and the energy and carbon emissions reduction technology that the company delivers to its clients.

Anna Malek-Woznica
• Promoted to Head of Certification Integrity at BRCGS in 2024
• Before that held the position of Certification Integrity Technical Manager delivering significant improvements in Certification Body performance monitoring and driving the certification integrity activities across the globe.
• Held senior technical roles across fresh produce and processing, where I managed compliance teams, conducted global supplier audits, and trained supplier auditors.
• Originally from Poland, completed PhD in Agricultural Engineering and taught food testing and food quality at the university.

Lianne Pemberton
Having been part of the apparel industry for 17 years, Lianne has worked across various brands and suppliers, including boohoo, Arcadia, Next, Britannia Labels and Byways. As the Head of Sustainability at boohoo, Lianne was responsible for product, performance, reporting, labelling, and packaging. Over the years, Lianne has worked in business development, strategic management and procurement. The UKI Sustainability Lead is a new role which has three key areas of focus, developing UKI Sustainability Goals that dovetail into global targets, engaging and supporting customers on their sustainable journey and providing training and resources to internal teams.

Jonathon Crawford
Jonathon has worked at Smurfit Westrock for 13 years and has spent 18 years within the corrugated industry.
Having started as an Account Manager at the Stalybridge site Jonathon then joined their UK National Team to handle PES & MNA accounts working across several countries.
For the past 7 years Jonathan has worked in the UK Technical team, where he supports our Top 200 accounts and business sites, tackling everything from implementing new business, leading trials and identifying value adding opportunities which yield cost reduction, efficiencies, or sustainability benefits.

Dominic Watkins
Dominic is a Tier 1 listed food lawyer who has advised food manufacturers, retailers and hospitality channels on compliance and regulatory challenges for over 20 years. His clients include household name supermarkets, market disruptor and some of the largest online retailers in the world. He regularly speaks on food law issues across the EU and beyond
