On the BFFF Business Conference Sustainability Day we were joined by Danielle Mulder from Carbon Intelligence and Annelie Selander from Nomad who explained the challenges and processes for understanding your carbon footprint.
Danielle commenced by explaining that businesses can now access a scientifically backed process to help you understand firstly your drivers and emissions and then what actions you need to take based to help achieve a global temperature rise of under 2°C.
Whilst no one company, organisation, or country, can achieve this on their own, by aligning everyone to the same goal and standards it is hoped we will achieve this. Every business in the UK also needs to take action if the UK is to achieve the target set by Governemnt net zero by 2050.
Annelie said from her experience in Nomad it was essential to understand the drivers of emissions within your own business. This is because unless you can measure – how can you take action to reduce?
She also highlighted that their processes and action taken had resulted in a 21% reduction in emission in 2020 versus 2019.
The biggest challenge going forward is the Scope 3 emissions that come from outside of their business.
If all companies were to undertake an analysis of their Scope 1 (a company’s own emissions that it controls) and Scope 2 (purchase of energy from outside) then the data required by Nomad, or any other company, would be simplified.
The advice from Danielle, bringing in the experts who can help you, even if you are a small business there are resources out there to assist you.
The presentation from this year’s Frozen Food Business Conference will be made available to all attendees. If you were not able to purchase a ticket, please contact Siobhan O’Callaghan.
