WHY WE’RE WORKING TOWARDS EARNED RECOGNITION

Nikki Redhead, Managing Director at Keep It Cool

Earned Recognition is not something an operation of our size has to chase. But it is a recognition that matters to where Keep It Cool is heading, and how I want the business to be known.

DVSA’s Earned Recognition scheme is built around larger fleets with the infrastructure to report compliance data automatically. Smaller operators like Keep It Cool are not expected, nor mandated, to be part of it. No one would question us if we left it alone and focused purely on the day-to-day.

But we are working towards it anyway.

What earned recognition actually means

Earned Recognition is a DVSA scheme that recognises operators who consistently meet high standards of compliance. It means integrating technology that reports directly on driver hours, vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness, rather than waiting for a periodic check to confirm it. In practice, it means building compliance into the operation every single day, not preparing for an inspection once a year.

For a business of our size, achieving this is not straightforward. It requires investment in systems, training and the kind of day-to-day discipline that is often much easier to talk about than to deliver. We have already started that work, upgrading technology to integrate with DVSA systems and aligning our processes with BRC accreditation standards.

We are not there yet. But we are working towards it properly.

Why we’re doing this

If it is not an obligation, why bother?

Because the standard we hold ourselves to should not depend on whether anyone is checking. Our customers trust us to move their product safely, on time and to the letter of the law, every single day. That trust is not conditional on scheme membership; it should be earned regardless.

Working towards Earned Recognition forces a kind of honesty on the business. It means looking closely at every part of the operation, from drivers, vehicles and systems, and asking whether it genuinely stands up to scrutiny, not whether it looks good on paper.

What it says about us and where we are now

Pursuing Earned Recognition is a commitment to putting our best foot forward, not because we are told to, but because that is the kind of business we want to be.

It is easy to stay quiet and avoid scrutiny. It is harder to actively invite it.

Earned Recognition is a genuine undertaking, and we are still working through it. But every step we have taken, from upskilling our driver team to upgrading our technology, building compliance into daily operations and conducting more frequent audits, has made us a stronger, more disciplined business.

When we do get there, it will not be because a scheme required it of us. It will be because we decided, as a small business, that the standard was worth reaching for anyway.
