Industry Automation Leader Joins Spacemaker to Drive UK Growth and European Expansion
Spacemaker Systems is delighted to announce the appointment of James Smith as UK & European Managing Director, responsible for accelerating the company’s continued growth in the United Kingdom and leading its strategic expansion across Europe.
James joins Spacemaker with an exceptional track record in warehouse automation, intralogistics, and commercial leadership. Combining professional qualifications in Mechanical Engineering with an MBA, he brings extensive experience in building high-growth businesses and developing successful international markets.
Prior to joining Spacemaker Systems, James spent nine years with AutoStore System AS, where he was a key member of the European leadership team. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in developing the UK market before assuming responsibility for a broader region encompassing the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, and the Baltic states.
Reflecting on the similarities between AutoStore’s journey and the opportunity ahead at Spacemaker, James commented:
“When I joined AutoStore in 2017, our technology was largely unknown in the market, with most end users, consultants and integrators continuing to specify traditional fixed-aisle solutions despite AutoStore offering clear advantages. I see Spacemaker in a very similar position today. The market is beginning to recognise that the next major leap forward in warehouse performance will come from intelligent pallet automation, and Spacemaker is exceptionally well positioned to lead that transition.”
James was attracted to Spacemaker not only by its innovative product portfolio, but also by the company’s vision, culture and pace of development.
“From my initial discussions with Paul Bates and the leadership team, I have been incredibly impressed by the focus, energy and agility of the business. What the UK team has achieved in such a short period of time is remarkable, and I feel immensely proud to be leading such a dedicated and talented team.”
“What convinced me that Spacemaker was the perfect fit is that the business has developed far more than individual products. It has created a complete ecosystem of solutions designed to maximise high-density warehouse performance. From a software platform that seamlessly links design, simulation, emulation and operational control, through to the individual hardware modules within the system, everything has been developed with scalability and customer value in mind. With a clear roadmap for product development and innovation, the future is incredibly exciting.”
Spacemaker’s integrated approach to design, engineering and manufacturing provides complete control throughout the development process, ensuring the highest levels of quality, reliability and customer value. This end-to-end capability allows the company to deliver solutions that maximise operational efficiency throughout the lifecycle of each installation.
Looking ahead, James believes the market is entering a new phase of automation adoption.
“Over recent years, the focus of warehouse automation investment has been heavily concentrated on piece-picking efficiency and order fulfilment. Comparatively little attention has been given to transforming bulk pallet storage beyond incremental improvements in conventional materials handling equipment. End users are now recognising that modern pallet shuttle automation can deliver the same levels of optimisation, productivity and space utilisation in bulk storage that automated picking technologies have achieved elsewhere in the warehouse.”
“The real opportunity emerges when these technologies are integrated to create seamless end-to-end workflows that significantly improve operational performance.”
James also highlighted Spacemaker’s unique ability to support both new-build and retrofit automation projects.
“One of the key reasons Spacemaker is rapidly establishing itself as a leader in pallet automation is our technology-agnostic approach. Our solutions can be adapted to suit almost any existing bulk storage environment, making retrofit and upgrade projects achievable for a vast number of customers. Combined with our ability to deliver complete greenfield installations, this positions Spacemaker for significant growth and market success in the years ahead.”
Paul Bates, CEO of Spacemaker Systems, welcomed the appointment:
“James brings a rare combination of technical expertise, commercial leadership and deep automation industry knowledge. His experience of helping transform AutoStore into one of the world’s most recognised warehouse automation brands makes him ideally placed to lead the next phase of Spacemaker’s growth. We are delighted to welcome him to the team and look forward to building our European business under his leadership.”
As demand continues to grow for high-density storage, pallet automation and intelligent warehouse solutions, the appointment of James Smith marks another important milestone in Spacemaker Systems’ ambition to become the leading provider of pallet shuttle automation solutions across the UK and Europe.
