Campden BRI to explain blockchain and bowtie with workshop

Campden BRI to explain blockchain and bowtie with workshop

Richard Leathers and Andrew Collins, food safety management systems leads at Campden BRI

A one-day workshop that will help the food industry understand how blockchain and other emerging approaches, such as bowtie, can support food safety and risk management systems will be held at Campden BRI on 31 March.

Campden BRI’s food safety management systems lead Richard Leathers said:

“Blockchain and bowtie are currently buzzwords in the food industry. However, few know what they actually are and fewer still understand their potential in the food and drink industry. This has led us to organise this workshop that will provide the industry with a thorough understanding of blockchain, other emerging approaches and bowtie.”

A blockchain, in simple terms, is a growing list of records, called blocks, that are linked using cryptography, which means that the records of a product’s journey throughout the supply chain are secure, traceable and cannot be tampered with. However, the applications of this technology can go beyond traceability. It can provide us with assurances on authenticity and provenance; product yields and waste reduction; and raw material and water usage efficiencies; as well as quickly giving us visibility of food safety and quality in complex supply chains.

The workshop will provide delegates with:

  • an understanding of new food safety principles
  • guidance on how to practically implement these systems
  • a practical workshop on bowtie, and
  • the opportunity to work with and discuss new concepts and techniques

While performing recent research, Andrew Collins, another Campden BRI food safety management systems lead, identified challenges with risk management and looked at approaches in other industries.

He added:

“The applications of this approach stretch far beyond what most in the food industry realise. This workshop will help us share what we’ve learnt about these approaches with the industry, especially those who manage food safety and risk. Food safety management systems have evolved in recent years from discrete studies, such as HACCP evaluations, to a more holistic approach based on the consideration of risks arising from threats, vulnerabilities, hazards [in a HACCP context] and their mitigation through the identification of effective controls implemented through in process management systems. A key challenge is in the communication of this holistic picture. HACCP while a very good tool, is used to manage the different categories of hazards – namely biological, chemical, physical and allergens. It is common that the requirement for risk analysis can be challenging and it uses a repetitive approach to look at each process. Bowtie takes a wider view on these risks and looks at the levels of control.”

Campden BRI will be joined by keynote speakers James Flynn, founder of Global Food Blockchain Initiative, Alistair Cowin of CGE Risk and Stephen Whyte of QADEX (industry leaders in digitisation of supply chain control systems).

Leathers continued:

“The digitisation of food and drink supply chains is here to stay. For those who work in manufacturing, technical, retail or logistical roles, you’ll want and need visibility of data for products and raw materials from the moment they are planted in the ground to the time they are consumed.”

The workshop is most suited to technical and quality managers in the food industry, and those who manage food safety, quality, authenticity and risk in the food supply chain including growers, manufacturers and retailers.

Mentor launches flexible e-learning option for managers

Mentor launches flexible e-learning option for managers

The Managing Forklift Operations online course is available from January 2020.

Mentor FLT Training has officially launched its new Managing Forklift Operations e-learning course. Accredited by AITT, the online course provides a flexible way for managers to gain the necessary skills to meet their responsibilities for safe forklift operations.

“We have trialled the e-learning course with customers across a variety of industries and had a great response from taster sessions at IMHX 2019, so we’re excited for more companies to see the benefits in 2020,” said Stuart Taylor, Managing Director of Mentor FLT Training.

According to Mentor, these benefits include significant financial gains. “Accidents, damage, disruptions and the resulting costs — both tangible and intangible — can be devastating to businesses, especially under the latest sentencing guidelines,” explained Stuart. “So now, more than ever, managers need the understanding and confidence to proactively reduce risk within their operations.”

The Managing Forklift Operations e-learning course contains comprehensive content divided into five manageable modules:

  • The Importance of Good Management
  • How a Forklift Truck Works
  • Safe and Unsafe Driving
  • Safe Non-Driving
  • Managing Safely

Each module includes engaging information and interactive videos, and finishes with a summary and quiz to confirm the delegate’s understanding.

Via the new online platform, training can be completed remotely, enabling managers and supervisors to fit training around their daily schedules and deadlines.

“We’ve found that people in managerial roles often struggle to find time to arrange and attend an off-site course, away from their post for a full day,” explained Stuart Taylor.

“But it’s vital that they can easily access suitable training — not just because it’s a legal requirement, but because it helps them reduce risk and boost productivity as a result. We wanted to make training for managers as convenient as possible, and by introducing an online solution, they can train at a pace, and place, that suits them.

“Managers and supervisors are instrumental in ensuring that forklift operators and those who work alongside forklifts follow company policies and stay safe. They must be able to identify bad practice, rectify it and ensure bad habits don’t take root. To do so, they need access to the relevant training, and we believe that our Managing Forklift Operators e-learning course is the cost-efficient, forward-thinking format that businesses have been missing.”

The Managing Forklift Operations e-learning course is available now. For more information and a video preview, visit: https://mentorflttraining.co.uk/courses/managing-forklift-operations-elearning

XPO Logistics Weighs In with Seven-Tonne Donation for 35 Food Banks in the UK

XPO Logistics Weighs In with Seven-Tonne Donation for 35 Food Banks in the UK

Employees of XPO Logistics, a leading global provider of transport and logistics solutions, helped families in need over the holiday season by delivering more than seven tonnes of food to 35 food banks. The donation is equivalent to providing an estimated 9,500 meals for vulnerable people across the UK.

Over 8,700 XPO employees supported the initiative by collecting or donating food, raising funds or volunteering at local food banks. This was the fifth consecutive food drive for the company and set a new record for its annual United in Giving campaign.

“XPO’s donations have enabled us to take care of vulnerable people in Clifton and other communities of Nottingham, including Ruddington, Beeston and West Bridgford,” said Wendy White, Clifton foodbank coordinator. “As part of the Trussell Trust Network of foodbanks, we have seen our figures multiply from this time last year. We supported 82 families in the 12 days leading up to the holiday season, and we were able to help the homeless and organisations such as the Refugee Centre with several soup kitchens. The food banks are extremely grateful for XPO’s support.”

Malcolm Wilson, chief executive officer at XPO Logistics Europe, said, “During the past five years, we have donated more than 32 tonnes of food through our United in Giving campaign. This has provided about 39,000 meals for vulnerable individuals in our communities. Our 2019 donation signals a significant step forward in our CSR strategy to reach those who are in critical need of help.”

Government Coronavirus Action Plan

Government Coronavirus Action Plan

The Government has today issued a Coronavirus action plan outlining what has been done to date to tackle the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, and what it plans to do next.

This plan can be found here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-action-plan.

Key things to note:

  • It is more likely than not that the UK will be significantly affected.
  • Given that the data are still emerging, they are uncertain of the impact of an outbreak on business.
  • Up to one fifth of employees may be absent from work during peak weeks. This may vary for individual businesses.
  • Planning draws on “reasonable worst case (RWC)” scenario.
  • The nature and scale of the response depends on the course of the disease, which cannot be predicted accurately at this point.
  • If the disease becomes established in the UK, we will need to consider further measures to reduce the rate and extent of its spread.
  • Actions could include population distancing strategies (such as school closures, encouraging greater home working, reducing the number of large scale gatherings)
  • For businesses facing short term cash flow issues (for example, as the result of subdued demand), an effective mitigation already exists in HMRC’s Time To Pay system. This is offered on a case by case basis if a firm or individual contacts HMRC about falling behind on their tax
  • The UK Government is advising businesses to build their own resilience by reviewing their business continuity plans and following the advice for employers available on GOV.UK – https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19
  • Businesses should also ensure that they keep up to date with the situation as it changes, at: www.gov.uk/coronavirus
