XPO Logistics Expands Use of Intelligent Robotics

XPO Logistics Expands Use of Intelligent Robotics in the UK Ahead of Holiday Shopping Season

XPO Logistics, the largest outsourced e-commerce fulfillment provider in Europe, has increased its use of intelligent robotics in the UK in anticipation of holiday retail volumes. The robots work alongside XPO’s employees to help manage inventory for distribution during the seasonal peak. The automation is manufactured by 6 River Systems, Inc., part of leading global commerce company Shopify and one of XPO’s key robotics partners in the US.

The autonomous, mobile robots collaborate with employees and adapt quickly to changes in fulfillment. The robots guide employees to the correct inventory area, validate the items picked and transport them to designated packing stations. The technology uses machine learning to double productivity rates on average and improve accuracy by as much as 40%. Safety is enhanced by reducing repetitive employee movements and time spent walking.

Mario Harik, chief information officer of XPO Logistics, said, “Our successful collaboration with 6 River Systems in the US has led to a seamless roll-out of the robots at our UK sites. Based on our pilots with retail apparel, the system handles peaks in consumer demand with near-perfect accuracy by complementing the work performed by our employees. The synergies are ideal for retail and e-commerce fulfillment this holiday season.”

“Our collaborative fulfillment robots are a strong fit with XPO’s high-volume warehouse environments,” said Jerome Dubois, co-founder and co-CEO of 6 River Systems. “This partnership has already delivered significant benefits for XPO customers.”

NEW DONUT DELIGHTS FROM DAWN FOODS

NEW DONUT DELIGHTS FROM DAWN FOODS

Dawn Foods has launched new frozen, ready to thaw plain ball donuts, ideal as the base for a range of creative decorating ideas to capitalise on the current trend for indulgent eye-catching premium donuts.

These classic plain Berliner donuts mean bakers can save time on preparing them from scratch and allocate more creative efforts towards adding different fillings and toppings. The donuts are made with Dawn’s authentic American Donut mix too, meaning consistent quality and delicious taste every time.

After thawing the donuts, they can simply be enjoyed on their own with a dusting of sugar. However, to capitalise on the indulgence trend, Dawn has developed a range of inspirational ideas to transform the donuts into a treat. They can be paired with Dawn Delifruit fillings in classic flavours such as strawberry or cherry or more exotic options like passion fruit for example. For a luxurious creamy filling, Dawn’s Neutral Fond can be combined with Dawn Compounds – concentrated flavouring pastes, and cream, or fill the donuts with custard for a classic all-time favourite.

When it comes to toppings, Dawn’s recently launched Dip Quik White Icing is a convenient option as it is ready to use – simply dip the donut in the icing for a professional finish. Dip Quik can also be easily customised with different flavours and colours to create truly eye-catching treats.  Dawn’s hot glazes, icings and ready to use buttercream style frostings can also be used to finish the donuts which can then be decorated with colourful curls, chocolate shavings or even fresh fruit or sweets.

Recipe for Chocolate Hazelnut Indulgence Donut:

Directions

Thaw the Dawn® Berliner Plain Donuts.

For the filling:

Add 200g Dawn® Neutral Fond to 200g water (min 22˚C) and mix until fully dissolved. Add Dawn® Cocoa Compound to taste/colour, mix in thoroughly.

Prepare 1000g whipped cream and add 1/3 of the cream and fold it in. Add the other 2/3 of cream and fold it in until fully combined. Make a hole in the side of each donut to allow for the filling.

Place the prepared Cocoa cream filling into a piping bag and pipe 20g into the centre.

For the icing:

Place Dawn® Glossy Icing Chocolate into a microwavable bowl and heat up to 45°C. Then dip the top of the donuts and leave them to set. You could achieve an even more indulgent taste with Dawn® Chocolate Belgian couvertures, which require melting to a dipping consistency, then pour over the top of the donuts.

To finish, sprinkle with crushed hazelnuts, decorate with chocolate treats and to top off, add a Dawn® Chocolate Glossy Icing drizzle.

Committee on Climate Change CEO Chris Stark to headline ADBA National Conference 2019

Committee on Climate Change CEO Chris Stark to headline ADBA National Conference 2019

  • ADBA National Conference 2019 will feature an “In Conversation with” session with Chris Stark, CEO of the UK Committee on Climate Change.
  • Conference will focus on how anaerobic digestion and biogas can contribute to addressing the climate emergency over the next decade.
  • ADBA will also celebrate its 10th anniversary

The UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) has confirmed that Chris Stark, CEO of the UK Committee on Climate Change, will join the line-up of keynote speakers to discuss the issues to focus on after the forthcoming General Election in an eagerly anticipated “In Conversation with…” session at the ADBA National Conference 2019 in London on 11th December.

A major highlight of a conference, this will emphasize the critical role the anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry needs to play in addressing the climate emergency and contribute to achieving the UK’s Net Zero greenhouse gases emissions target set up by the Government. Other eminent keynote speakers on the day include Stuart Roberts, Vice-President of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), who will review the NFU’s recent Achieving Net Zero – Farming’s 2040 Goal report, in which AD delivers the biggest contribution, and Hilary Tanner, Policy Adviser at the Local Government Authority, who will share the LGA’s views on the implementation of mandatory separate food waste collections, and how biogas and biomethane can be utilised by local authorities.

The next 10 years are our most critical to act against the climate crisis, and AD can be rolled out now to cut emissions in some of the hardest to decarbonise sectors of our economy. Entitled “There’s no Net Zero without Biogas”, the conference will feature sessions discussing:

  • How to realize the full potential of AD in the Climate Emergency decade
  • The role of AD in developing a Net Zero circular economy
  • Delivering sustainable heat and transport through AD

The conference will also cover more operational aspects such as optimising the use of digestate and the financial impact of replacing and/or upgrading equipment.

Expert panellists include:

  • Dr. Keith Simons, Principal Scientist, SHV Energy
  • Jonathan Scurlock, Chief Advisor -Renewable Energy, NFU
  • Olivia Midgley, Editor, Farmers Guardian
  • David Hurren, CEO, Air Liquide
  • Alan Midwinter, Head of Renewable Development, SGN
  • Amaya Arias-Garcia, Engineering Design Manager, Suez
  • William Mezzullo, Head of JLEN AD, Foresight Group

ADBA will also take the opportunity to celebrate its 10th Anniversary and reflect on the achievement of the industry over the past decade.

Charlotte Morton, ADBA Chief Executive, said: “Whilst we’re very proud of the industry’s achievements over the last 10 years, there is so much more that AD and biogas is needed to deliver, particularly in the context of the climate emergency.  The next decade will be crucial if we are to fulfil our potential to decarbonise the UK economy and help achieve Net Zero targets, as well as food security through recycling the nutrients essential to food production.  We believe that the UK AD industry can reduce the UK’s greenhouse gases emissions by 5% annually by 2030.  But it is urgent that we act now, and we are therefore delighted to welcome Chris Stark, Stuart Roberts and Hilary Tanner to our conference. We want to make this event a turning point in raising awareness of AD’s potential among decision makers, movers and shakers and in securing the policy and financial support that the industry needs to flourish. Their presence will greatly help.”
