MAGGIE ALPHONSI CONFIRMED AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE FROZEN FOOD BUSINESS CONFERENCE

Margaret Alphonsi has represented her country an impressive 74 times, scored 28 tries, and helped England win a record-breaking seven consecutive Six Nations crowns. She was a crucial member of the team that won the 2014 Rugby World Cup for the first time in 20 years and was part of the team that was crowned the BBC’s Sports Personality Team of the Year. Being named Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year and having been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame Maggie has become a household name but also a media professional.

Since retiring Maggie has commentated on live rugby matches and became the first ever former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby.

From Southeast London, Maggie has always taken education seriously and is a brand ambassador for SportsAid helping the next generation of British sports stars. In addition to SportsAid, Maggie also represents charities such as Sporting Equals and SKRUM, the latter of which aims to give the youth of Africa hope through rugby.

Maggie is an excellent speaker and is well qualified to share her experiences. Certainly, when she shares those experiences, you don’t need to be a rugby fan to be interested or inspired by how she has become a prominent figure in the challenging world of a male-dominated sport. Maggie has a story you want to hear.

LITTLE MOONS WILL BE STAR OF THE MENU

Ice cream ‘from another world’ could soon be landing on your menu as leading regional wholesaler KFF adds five flavours of Little Moons Mochi Ice Cream treats to its product portfolio.

Little Moons are bite-sized balls of ice cream wrapped in a soft rice dough. Originating in Japan and now hugely popular in the UK, the mochi dough is made from naturally gluten-free sweet, soft and chewy rice flour dough. The dough is steamed and then wrapped around a centre of artisanal gelato ice cream that is made in small batches from British milk and slow-churned for an intense flavour. Free from artificial flavourings and preservatives the ice cream is suitable for vegetarians and a vegan flavour is also available.

The Himalayan Salted Caramel flavour is a blend of sweet and salty caramel ice cream wrapped in a soft mochi layer, while the Honey Roasted Pistachio variety has a rich nutty, slightly sweet taste. The smooth Creamy Coconut Mochi Ice Cream is finished with a dusting of desiccated coconut.

Summer Raspberry Mochi is packed with ripe, juicy raspberries while the Passionfruit and Mango variety combines sharp and sweet flavours, wrapped in a layer of bold purple mochi. Suitable for vegans, the tropical treat is made with cashew milk that gives it an extra creamy texture.

All five Little Moons varieties are supplied frozen in cases of 60 x 32g. Remove from the freezer and soften at room temperature for three to five minutes before serving.

For more information on the Little Moons Mochi Ice Creams, or for details of other products in the extensive KFF range, visit www.kff.co.uk or download the handy KFF app.

BRAKES LAUNCHES CHEF-INSPIRED VIDEO-ON-DEMAND MINI-SERIES

As part of its Virtual Summer Food Festival, Brakes has launched a series of videos aimed at providing a chef’s eye view of practical support and kitchen inspiration, helping operators tap into latest trends and time saving ideas.

The ‘In the Kitchen’ podcast-style series launches with a look at how some favourite multi-application ingredients can help save labour and time, as well as creating a variety of on-trend dishes.

The Labour Saving episode of In the Kitchen will be followed by a look at the post-COVID trend towards nostalgia and comfort food, which is a big theme for 2022.  From familiar flavours with a cheeky twist to inspiration from around the globe, this edition will focus on what’s trending and show some fantastic menu ideas to help.

Other programmes in the series include Mediterranean Stretch, which offers ideas to capitalise on consumer interest in food from the Mediterranean region, with growing interest in the Middle East, Turkey and North Africa, joining long-time favourites like Italy, Spain and Greece.  This will be followed by Easy Experimentation, looking at consumers’ insatiable appetite for the latest flavours and how simple twists on traditional dishes can add excitement to any menu.  The programme culminates with the hot topic of Sustainable Flavours, helping operators understand the sustainability trend and share practical solutions.

Mark Irish, Head Development Chef at Brakes, said: “We wanted to create a series of videos that are presented by our chefs who have the greatest understanding of the unique pressures of today’s kitchen.  By showcasing dishes inspired by the latest food trends, we have created a wide variety of recipe ideas that are simple in their execution, but look and taste fantastic.

“We are facing a perfect storm of labour shortages and increasing inflation caused by global events which are having a huge impact on the ability of chefs to run efficient kitchens.  Our video series takes the findings of some of the research and insight that exists and turns that into practical, chef-led ideas and recipes.”

The first episode is available now, with regular updates over the course of the Brakes Virtual Summer Food Festival, which runs until the end of July.

As well as chef videos, the Brakes Virtual Summer Food Festival will feature a range of new content available to show visitors.  https://www.brake.co.uk/virtual-food-event/video

XPO LOGISTICS TRIALS BRIDGE SAFETY TECHNOLOGY FOR UK ROAD FLEET IN PARTNERSHIP WITH VUE GROUP

XPO Logistics, a leading provider of freight transportation services, has partnered with VUE Group, a Radius business, to trial the Low Bridge Alerting System for commercial transport operations. XPO evaluates the new in-cab truck technology during day and night distribution runs from its Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk depot. UK-based VUE is a specialist innovator of fleet risk management solutions.

The VUE Low Bridge Alerting System uses telematics to automatically warn a truck driver when low bridges pose a strike risk along the route. The solution eliminates the potential for human error and stores data histories of alerts that can be accessed for training and documentation purposes.

Glen Mullins, managing director, VUE Group, said, “We’re extremely excited to be launching our Low Bridge Alerting System alongside XPO, one of our most valued customers. Their feedback has been invaluable, and we’re delighted the trials have succeeded. We hope to keep creating more solutions with XPO’s input in the future, to continue to help fleet owners solve prevalent issues through innovation.”

Around 2,000 bridge strikes happen every year in the UK, costing millions of pounds in infrastructure damages, as well as significant truck repair costs and service interruptions.

Dan Myers, managing director – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said, “Our joint developmental contributions to low bridge, trailer-height technology demonstrate how we live our values of safety, responsibility and innovation. We share these values with our partner VUE Group and are helping to refine their game-changing technology.”
