CHRIS MOON CONFIRMED TO SPEAK AT THE TECHNICAL CONFERENCE AND HEALTH AND SAFETY CONFERENCE

The motivational speaker at this year’s Technical and Health and Safety Conference is probably the luckiest person to be alive you’re likely to meet and when it comes to challenging the concept of limitation, he literally walks the talk. Chris Moon’s a former army officer who left to work for a charity clearing landmines.

He’s one of the few westerners to survive as a prisoner of the Khmer Rouge negotiating his release and that of his two Cambodian colleagues. He was blown up in 1995 walking in a safe area losing his right arm and leg. He survived against all odds, taught himself to run again and became the world’s first amputee ultra-distance runner. He has recently completed the Devon Coast to Coast 117 miler and the Badwater Death Valley 135 miles through Death Valley the hottest place on earth. He’s going to share experience and principles that’ll help us be more resilient and make the best of our lives.

Chris has got a film clip to introduce him taken from a drama documentary with the cheerful title ‘I Shouldn’t Be Alive’ If you don’t like gory stuff, look away after the explosion, but as he says, ‘Why should you worry? It was my leg’.

There’s still time to book your tickets for the Technical Conference and the Health and Safety Conference.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM FSA: 3 MORE OILS NOW PERMITTED AS SUBSTITUTES FOR SUNFLOWER OIL

Following an assessment carried out by FSA, 3 more oils:  fully refined palm oilfully refined soyabean oil and fully refined coconut oil, in addition to refined rapeseed oil, can now be used to substitute sunflower oil without a declaration of the change on the label, as short-term measure, with a pragmatic enforcement approach taken by Local Authorities.

A smarter comms enforcement letter has been sent to Local Authorities which you can access here: Update: FSA provides consumer guidance as more fully refined oils may be used as ingredient substitutions  | Food Standards Agency. In addition, the two previous letters (22 March and 14 April) on this subject are also available.

Please note that currently this is a three nation (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) approach.  FSS is working closely with Scottish Government, they are minded to communicating a similar approach next week for Scotland once the queries they are working on are resolved. In light, of the pressures on industry, the FSA with agreement from FSS, decided to make the announcement today.

The FSA will also be publishing consumer facing communications.

Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016

Why do we need it? and what does it mean?

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places a duty upon every employer to provide, as far as is reasonably practicable, a place of work that is safe and without risk to health.

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999places duties on employers and employees including those who are clients, designers, principal contractors or other contractors.

Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016with effect from 1 July 2016, HASAWA was supplemented by CEMFAW

Why is it important?

We help our customers consider the risks from exposure to Electro Magnetic Frequencies and protect from any adverse effects. High levels of exposure and interference can give rise to effects that are irritating or unpleasant. They are as follows:

  • interference with active or passive implanted or body worn devices
  • nausea, vertigo, metallic taste in the mouth, magnetophosphenes
  • nerve stimulation, effects on the CNS & peripheral nervous system – tingling, muscle contraction, heart arrythmia

EMPLOYEES AT PARTICULAR RISK

One who has declared to their employer a condition which may lead to a higher susceptibility to the potential effects of exposure to EMFs.

  • Expectant mothers who have informed you of their condition
  • Workers who have declared the use of active implanted medical devices (AIMDs), passive implanted medical devices (PIMDs) or body-worn medical devices (BWMDs)

How we can help

EEUK Ltd have worked with several members of the British Frozen Food Federation recently on completing EMF surveys. These can be useful for informing your risk assessment or in relation to specific concerns raised towards at risk workers. There has recently been a rise in Medical Consultants requesting a survey be complete before they sign off any patients as fit to return to work following fitting of pacemakers and/or internal cardiac defibrillators. By using a combination of personal monitoring (for at risk individuals) and monitoring equipment at source we have been able to make clear recommendations on how you can protect all your workers from any possible risk.

What to do?

The initial conversation would be around any of the above. If you are concerned about a staff member that could potentially at risk, or you are concerned about a piece of machinery that could potentially interfere with your members of staff, please send an email to Chris.nicholson@eeukltd.com

You could also call on 01782 667820 to catch up about any questions or queries that you have on this topic.
