PLANET AND PEOPLE AT THE TOP OF OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL’S AGENDA

Since launching in 1998, Oakland has grown substantially to a group of businesses which expect to break through the £100m turnover hurdle by the end of 2022 through core activities including temperature-controlled supply chain and case consolidation, co-packing, D2C fulfilment, transport and customs clearance.

Oakland International has always had a core belief that growing the business should never be to the detriment of its people or the planet. Public awareness of the importance of sustainable supply chains has probably never been higher and it is progressively becoming a major point of difference when brands are selecting their supply chain partner of choice.

Oakland International’s Co-Founder and Group CEO, Dean Attwell, comments: “We are proud of the industry sector within which we operate and the way in which we have all adapted and supported the nation during the pandemic, but we cannot be complacent when it comes to doing the best we can for our people and our planet.”

Oakland International is starting the journey to become Net Zero and a B-Corp approved business, which will support their next 5-year journey plan. But why bother?

“There is a lot of talk about ‘greenwash’ and CSR where businesses talk a good story about caring for the planet and their people, but don’t really live by these values; it is seen as mainly marketing value. We have always believed that a strong environmental and people focus is not only the right way of doing business, but it is also good for the bottom line.” commented Dean.

Oakland have focussed on a range of initiatives which include solar PV generation, EV car schemes of which they will have around 50 in the family by the end of 2022, low carbon construction, ground source heating, LED lighting, energy efficient cooling, adiabatic cooling, green travel plans, electric fridge trailers, packaging design, recycling, zero to landfill and road miles reductions to name just some. Oakland’s latest environmental innovation, OakRA, is ground-breaking. Launched this month, OakRA will see huge savings in home delivery packaging waste by replacing 80% of cardboard and insulate with fully returnable insulated assets. The reusable OakRA’s will help solve issues for many D2C clients concerned about how much packaging waste is generated.

BRCGS AA rated, Oakland International operates 24-hours/7 days a week and is a D2C/B2C/B2B specialist in contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution and a brand development support provider for ambient, chilled and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain.

Added Dean: “The results of this environmental focus are threefold. Firstly by providing a great reputation for being one of the most proactive pro-environmental operators in our sector, which is a great USP, which is not inconsequential when securing new business.

“Secondly a major consequence is that we see far greater engagement from team members in both the environmental initiatives and the social responsibility initiatives, which strongly overlap into our local communities. And finally our team members share the same concerns about the planet and communities as we are all affected by the same issues; our direct involvement to make improvements calls for team support and engagement which leads to higher retention levels and leads to higher productivity and quality of performance.

“As a consequence of all of this we have lower energy costs, less waste, higher productivity, higher engagement, higher growth levels and therefore higher profitability levels. So if businesses need to have three sound reasons why to invest in their people and planet, there they are!”

BFFF CALLS FOR URGENT RESOLUTION OF FISH IMPORT RED TAPE

Richard Harrow, CEO of the British Frozen Food Federation has written to Defra expressing concerns that new red tape will cause unnecessary delays to imports of frozen and fresh fish into the UK from the EU.

In his letter to the Department, Mr Harrow, who is also chairman of the Seafish Importers Forum, raised concerns about additional health certification requirements, delays to the introduction of electronic certification and problems with IUU (illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing) catch certificates.

From November, health certification requirements will apply to seafood from the EU and Mr Harrow believes that this will cause delays by adding additional paperwork to the current extremely efficient paper-based transport arrangements.

He said: “Many UK businesses, especially those based in North Lincolnshire and the Humber area, are dependent on timely and efficient delivery of fresh and frozen fish. Adding a cumbersome certification stage, involving the physical stamping, and signing of paper certificates by veterinary officers, will require the consignments to be diverted over several hours to certification centres in the exporting countries. This will add unnecessary costs and the fresh product will suffer unless a planned electronic certification system is implemented.

He called on Defra to redouble its efforts to develop and implement a trusted trader scheme or electronic certification system as soon as possible.

Mr Harrow added: “Trusted trader or electronic certification, if implemented, would ease much of the anticipated disruption. We are aware within the Importers Forum that Defra is developing electronic health certification and fraud-resistant digital signatures. However, we are concerned that the electronic certification process will not be in place before the November 2022 deadline. If they cannot be made available before November 2022, we ask Defra to consider other mitigation measures to ensure that the trade in fresh fish continues without hindrance.”

He also raised concerns about IUU catch certificates. As it currently stands fish caught by EU boats and landed in EU ports do not require IUU catch certificates. However current UK legislation requires all fish imports from the EU to have a IUU catch certificate, creating more complexity and delay.

“These are examples of the knock-on effects of Brexit and additional complexity that has been added to the UK food system which BFFF members now have to deal with on a daily basis.”

UK ANNOUNCES NEW ECONOMIC SANCTION AGAINST RUSSIA – SIGN UP TO WEBINARS FOR FURTHER DETAIL!

The UK has today (15/03/22) announced new economic sanctions against Russia.

The new sanctions will deny Russia and Belarus access to Most Favoured Nation tariffs for hundreds of their exports and ban UK exports of high-end luxury goods to both countries. The full press release can be viewed here.

Please note – the press release refers to white fish, but we have been informed by Defra that it will be ALL fish from Russia which fall under the commodity chapter codes 03 and 16. However, what is still unclear is whether that means fish directly from Russia only or fish of Russian origin coming via, for example China, Germany, Poland.

The timing of these new sanctions, which impose 35% tariff on top of any existing tariff, is also to be confirmed. We are told that regulation will come into force sometime next week after it has been laid in Parliament, but a definite date is yet to be communicated. We are also unsure at what point the sanctions will be imposed – at the time goods are customs cleared or will it be at the ‘stroke of midnight’ meaning anything still on the water will become liable.

The EU have already announced a barrage of sanctions which will come into effect once published in the EU Official Journal later today. We are not sure as yet if this will align with the UK approach and include tariffs on Russian goods.

In addition to the above, UK Export Finance has announced it will no longer issue any new guarantees, loans and insurance for exports to Russia and Belarus, whilst retaining £3.5 billion of financial support for trade to Ukraine. You can view the press release here.

Upcoming webinars:

BRITISH FROZEN FOOD FEDERATION LAUNCHES FROZEN FOOD WEEK COMPETITION AT IFE

The British Frozen Food Federation is celebrating a return to in-person exhibitions by running an a-pea-ling on-stand competition at IFE (International Food & Drink Event) in March.

To win a starring role for their product in the British Frozen Food Federation’s upcoming Frozen Food Week campaign, visitors are invited to ‘guess how many peas are in the freezer’. There’s also a 10% discount on federation membership to be won.

Announced in the President’s speech at the British Frozen Food Federation annual luncheon in November 2021, the inaugural Frozen Food Week will take place in September 2022. Using social media as the main platform to engage with stakeholders, the sustainability credentials of frozen food will be promoted with reduced food waste, better availability and carbon savings as key topics.

Harry Hinks, digital marketing manager at the British Frozen Food Federation, said: “Frozen food has been re-evaluated by consumers due to the challenges brought about by the pandemic. We’ve seen stratospheric category growth and are looking forward to meeting face-to-face with people to discuss the sustainability, quality and value credentials of frozen food in advance of our first Frozen Food Week.

“With many in-person events cancelled over the last two years, there’s a real feeling of excitement and eagerness to get out there.  We hope to see lots of people on stand to try and guess the number of peas in the freezer!”

The British Frozen Food Federation will be exhibiting at IFE (International Food & Drink Event) from 21 – 23 March 2022 on stand 4525. The competition will also run on social media so that anyone unable to attend in person can take part. Join in on Twitter or LinkedIn.
