Workplace Transport and Road Risk Seminar

BOOK NOW

Thursday 27th January 2022
Newark Showground, Nottinghamshire. NG24 2NY

Workplace transport was the second highest cause of fatal injuries in GB between 2020-2021
18% of all work-related fatalities reported were from a moving vehicle in 2020-2021 and with more employees returning to work as well as the roads, the topic of this event becomes all the more essential for industry Health and Safety professionals.

A thought provoking programme built with the safety of attendees in mind

The programme covers talks and demonstrations from HSE, Mentor Training, Brakes, A-Safe Barriers, D.tec, Brake UK and Highway England with an inspirational talk of a forklift accident from Lisa Ramos and David Garton.

The COVID protocol for the event has been built around the seminar programme to ensure all attendees are completely COVID safe throughout the day. If you have any concerns about the safety of this workplace transport and road risk event, please get in touch with our Head of Health and Safety, Simon Brentnall.

Workplace Transport
With workplace transport being the second cause of fatal injuries in GB with 25 deaths between 2020/21, it is crucial we make workplace transport the topic of this seminar.

On the day we will be joined by our expert Nina Day from HSE to explain more. With many workplace transport incidents caused by fork lift trucks we are joined by Mentor training to go through the 7 deadly sins and a practical session on forklift truck pre-use checks.

From our own membership Sue Rowland from the Brakes safety team will give us an insight of managing dock loading safety and key control.

The importance of vehicle and pedestrians separated with be demonstrated by A Safe barriers.
Finally, our keynote speakers Lisa Ramos and David Garton take us through their journey following Lisa’a workplace transport accident in 2006 in which she tragically lost her leg.

Work Related Road Risk
In terms of work-related road risk, the industry is currently experiencing driver shortages and fatalities reported in 2019 showed 66 goods vehicle fatalities (including heavy and light goods vehicles) not including drivers of company cars; therefore another pertinent topic.

BFFF will start the road risk session by delivering a real-life case study involving company car driver fatigue which Simon Brentnall personally investigated. NFU mutual will follow with the pitfalls of grey fleet with employees using their own vehicles.

With drugs and alcohol being a contributing factor in many road traffic collisions D.tec will provide an interactive session on how companies can protect themselves through solutions such as screening.
We will then be joined by the Brake, the road risk charity, to discuss behavioural risks and road safety for fleets.
Finally, Jim Magner from Driving For Better Business – Highways England, introduces their road safety campaign available for companies followed by the one fateful day film.

COMPACT TRUCKS ROUND OFF UNICARRIERS MX SERIES

With the MXS3 and MXS4, UniCarriers are expanding their successful MX series of electric counterbalanced trucks with new models that set benchmarks in agility, performance and intelligence. All the new models are characterised by their compact and robust design, excellent manoeuvrability and intelligent control systems. This makes them ideal for dynamic handling tasks in demanding, confined environments.

The MXS3 line is made up of 3-wheel forklifts with capacities from 1.4 to 2 tonnes, while the 4-wheel forklifts from the MXS4 line have capacities of 1.6 to 2 tonnes. With this expansion, the MX series now covers all categories of logistical tasks, from the MXS all the way to the heavy-duty MXL range. It means that warehouse operators can find a one-stop solution for every application, from a single supplier.

The MXS3 and MSX4 combine the heritage of their award-winning predecessors, the TX3 and TX4, with the advanced technology of the MX series. All systems and components are specified for robustness, ease of maintenance and high operating efficiency, as well as excellent ergonomics.

Agile and manoeuvrable, safe and smooth

With their compact design, amazing manoeuvrability and intelligent control systems, the MXS3 and MXS4 are ideal for handling tasks in cramped, fast-paced environments. The latest steering technology maximises agility and productivity in tight spaces.

Four-wheel steering with +100° rear turning axle provides the MXS4 with smooth and agile manoeuvring, including instant side turns with no pushback. The MXS3 features 360° steering that allows the truck to turn 180° without stopping. The unique UniCarriers S3 – Stability Support System – adapts rapidly to pedal operation, and ensures all movements are smooth. Advanced curve control enables the fastest safe cornering speed in every situation. To ensure safe operation whatever the lift height or load, advanced hydraulics keep load handling steady and precisely controlled.

A truck for drivers

The system performance of a truck is defined by the interaction between vehicle and operator, and the MSX3 and MSX4 are both optimally tuned to their driver. Among their most outstanding features is a set of intelligent assistive technologies that ensure maximum driver comfort and safety.

Advanced safety features, ergonomic controls and comfortable working conditions enhance driver confidence, performance and satisfaction. The ProVision design with its unique transparent front panel gives the driver excellent vision in all directions, ensuring safe handling. An advanced full-colour display visualises data to ensure that the driver always has the most important information available at a glance. Spacious operator compartments offer comfort and easy access features for drivers of all sizes, in any of the perfect-fit cabin solutions – including optional cold store modification.

Suitable for all applications

Built to cope with the harshest conditions, this truck range is suitable for deployment in food and beverage manufacturing and wholesale, fishing and fish processing, chemicals, textiles or general and refrigerated warehousing and storage, just to name a few examples – or wherever a powerful, intelligent and agile handling solution is required.

The MXS3 and MXS4 are available now from the manufacturer and all UniCarriers dealers.

COP26 – WHAT’S THE OUTCOME?

Now that the dust has settled on COP26, it is time to reflect on the content and outcome of the event. It is clear from a recent membership survey that sustainability is now the number one concern of members.

We are fortunate that BFFF member, Inspired Energy, have provided us with a summary of COP26 with two features on the BFFF website.

The first covers key takeaways from the event and then a piece asking if it achieved its goals.

Inspired Energy have also launched a COP26 insight hub for business. BFFF members can access this portal to gain insight on the impacts of the announcements from COP26.

BFFF RETURNS TO LIVE EVENTS WITH ANNUAL LUNCHEON

On Thursday 25th November 2021 we held our first live event since the pandemic hit us in March 2020. Over 600 BFFF members and guests met at the Hilton on Park Lane for the Annual Luncheon, the iconic networking event of the frozen calendar.

The atmosphere was really enjoyable as people celebrated being able to get together again.  The Federation team had also ensured that all those attending had either a full vaccination record or proof of a negative LFT. All those attending were given a green wrist band to show checks had been completed. Whilst the checks did cause some ques, BFFF members and guests were happy we had done everything we could to make the event Covid safe.

BFFF President, Ian Stone, gave a first-class speech, his inaugural one in front of a live audience. I think it is fair to say that Ian has an amazing passion for our industry which came across strongly when he spoke. His theme of this is a “pivotal moment for our industry” certainly resonated with many in the audience. Despite Covid and Brexit, consumers and professional kitchens have re-discovered frozen and we need to seize the moment.

“Britain has fallen in love with frozen.”

Ian Stone, BFFF President

We would like to thank the companies who have sponsored and supported the event:

Headline Sponsor: Vine Meats Ltd.

President’s Reception Sponsor: JBT (John Bean Technologies)

Wellington Reception Sponsor: GXO Logistics UK Limited

Partner Sponsors: Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd, Freiberger UK Ltd, Seara

This year, our chosen charity partner was Nottinghamshire Mind. With the pandemic having such a major impact on people’s mental health, we thought it was a good and worthy choice.

As those stalwarts of the Annual Luncheon will know, this year’s event broke a long-standing tradition by being held on a Thursday. Rest assured, next year we will be returning to a Tuesday so be sure to put 22nd November 2022 in your diary now.

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to mention Mr. Peter Day. Peter is our only honorary life member and at 90 years of age was still spritely enough to attend this year’s event.

It was so fitting that Ian Stone praised Peter’s long-standing support to the Federation and it was heartwarming to hear the round of applause that he received from the room.

HSE -The Wear It Study – Call To Action

HSE are looking for participants to help understand COVID-19 virus transmission risk, by studying physical interactions in the workplace.

The Wear-It Study, part of the PROTECT COVID-19 National Core Study, aims to collate and generate highly detailed data on workers’ interactions to support national efforts to better understand and control the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus which causes COVID-19).

To that effect, small wearable proximity devices will be provided to willing workers at participating workplaces to generate the quality contact data which is needed but is currently lacking. Small static beacons will also be deployed in the workplace to provide an indication of the location of these contacts.

Workplaces of interest include food and drinks manufacturing, warehouses and distribution centres, general manufacturing sites and large offices.

Your help is needed

  • If your organisation is willing to take part, then HSE would seek volunteers from your workforce to wear a device while at work
  • If you are already using similar technologies to help maintain social distancing on your sites, HSE would be very grateful if you were willing to discuss the possibility of sharing anonymised contact data with the study team

If you are interested, please read the invitation letter or contact the study team by:
