LISA RAMOS CONFIRMED AT THIS YEARS WORKPLACE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RISK SEMINAR

This year the Workplace Transport and Road Risk Seminar will be held at the Newark Showground on the 27th January, the first face to face event the British Frozen Food Federation have been able to put on since the pandemic. Lisa Ramos and David Garton are confirmed as the Inspiration speaker at this years show and will be talking about their frank and honest account of Lisa’s rehabilitation, and the long-term struggles, that are part and parcel of adjusting to life, after an accident.

Lisa Ramos was involved in a forklift accident at work, in 2006. As a result of this, she is now an above knee amputee. She had been working alongside her husband and although he wasn’t on the shift on that day, he witnessed the aftermath. They offer a unique insight, into the devastating impact, an accident can have. Not only on the injured party, but their family, friends and work colleagues. #rememberlisabutdontforgetdaveandkieran

Simon Brentnall, Head of Health and Safety, commented “Lisa will share with you the consequences, both mentally and physically of her forklift accident which happened in 2006, this resulted in the amputation of her left leg above the knee. Her husband Dave with also give his account of the journey from a different perspective. I was first made aware of Lisa’s story from Stuart Taylor of Mentor training , Mentor being part of our membership, from our experience of previous events, delegates attending always benefit from the real-life stories.

DELAY ON REQUIREMENT TO USE NEW AHR EHCS UNTIL JANUARY

The EU has voted to delay when traders must start to use the new Export Health Certificates (EHCs), which were due to be introduced from 21 August 2021.

The new Animal Health Regulation (AHR) EHCs were due to be used from August 21 2021 for goods exported to the EU. However, the EU has voted to delay the date the new EHCs must be signed until 15 January 2022. It includes EHCs for all products of animal origin, live animals, germinal products and composite products and also applies to traders moving goods to Northern Ireland.

The EU’s proposal will mean that current EHCs signed before 15 January 2022 can be used until 15 March 2022 for goods on route to the EU. Changes to the rules for the certification of composite products which took effect in April 2021 continue to apply.

We know that businesses have been working hard to get ready for the new EHCs on 21 August 2021. We are currently reviewing options for the use of current and new AHR certificates that have already been made available and will provide updates on this shortly.

NFCU RAISES CONCERNS ON SQUID SPECIATION

We have received official communications from the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) raising awareness of concerns in relation to squid speciation.

These concerns are based on market trends, situational factors and specific intelligence which NFCU is able to share concerning the potential for fraud risks in this area.

This information is for members only and not to be circulated further.

Several species of squid are routinely imported into the UK. These species can be fished by, and transported from, multiple countries. In many cases consignments of squid are subject to a third country tariff. The tariff can vary based on both the species of the squid and the country from which it is being exported.

Certain species of frozen squid can be more sought after than others and as a result command a higher price on the market. Therefore, it can be financially beneficial to incorrectly declare squid to be a particular species owing to its end value, as well as the tariff rates which may apply in line with the species declaration.

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the demand for squid in the UK as the majority of squid which enters the UK goes into the hospitality sector. The disruption to this sector over the last twelve months has resulted in a surplus of frozen product and consequently issues included within this report may relate to historically imported frozen product.

NFCU understands that frozen raw squid products entering the UK from China have been subject to species misdeclaration.

Products entering the UK declared as Illex Argentinus (Argentine shortfin squid) have been found through laboratory analysis to be Todarodes Pacificus (Japanese flying squid). Due to scarcity, Illex Argentinus variety has recently commanded a higher price than Todarodes Pacificus. These two species have differing official sales designations.

This is a practice which has also been noted by European partners, with incorrect details also recorded on catch certificates and health certificates.

More historically, intelligence has suggested attempts by Chinese fishing vessels to meet shortfalls in both these species through the fraudulent landing of Dosidicus Gigas (jumbo flying squid).

We understand that squid speciation can be challenging to perform robustly from an analytical perspective.

Members are advised to confirm due diligence checks relating to product authenticity are in place to ensure that:

  • Frozen raw squid products purchased from suppliers have the correct designation in relation to the declared species;
  • Members are fully content with product traceability.

NFCU requests that any concerns relating to this thematic area – particularly where a large scale of misrepresentation is evidenced or suspected – be raised with them.

NFCU would also be interested in any further reflections from members around any relevant economic dynamics within this sector.

NFCU WARNS MEMBERS TO BE CAUTIOUS OF FAKE CARRIERS

The National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) have made us aware of a potential increase in criminality associated with Freight Auction Websites.

With truck drivers and, therefore, truck capacity in such short supply, more and more companies are naturally turning to online freight exchanges to find available and affordable ways to move their goods.

However, the NFCU are warning everyone to be diligent and carry out the relevant checks because there are reports that criminals are stealing the identity of legitimate transport companies and then registering on freight auction websites, bidding for haulage jobs that are advertised on the auction site, winning the bid, collecting the goods and then disappearing.

What can you do?

  • If you award business, make it a condition that your haulier cannot then subcontract the load to another company.
  • Warn when subcontracting freight using a freight exchange, to carry out extra due diligence checks of the company to be used.
  • Be alert when dealing with transport companies that have a high registration number on the website -the higher the number, the newer they are to the site.
  • Be aware when there has been a recent change of ownership, company takeover or name-change.
  • Always follow up on a delivery, if the truck is exceptionally late and the transport was arranged using a freight auction website: Escalate immediately, if you suspect theft, inform the Police immediately.

DOUBLE NOMINATION FOR STAR REFRIGERATION AT THE RAC COOLING INDUSTRY AWARDS

Star Refrigeration has announced it has been shortlisted for two accolades at the prestigious RAC Cooling Industry Awards 2021. Taking place on 21st October 2021 at the Grosvenor House Ballroom London, the award ceremony is envisioned to be a long overdue industry celebration following last year’s online event during the pandemic.

Known for championing diversity in the industry and taking the lead on external inclusion projects, Star has been nominated for the Diversity Impact award. Additionally the company has been recognised for its Environmental Collaboration with Asda and City FM, an initiative which to date has saved the supermarket chain 1,100 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Dr Rob Lamb, Group Sales and Marketing Director at Star Refrigeration said, “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for these two categories as they really capture our ethos. We are proud of our achievements in the environmental and diversity arenas and hope to add to our growing award collection in October”.

The highly anticipated awards ceremony will be hosted by a surprise celebrity compere and also includes a three-course dinner with wine, evening entertainment, a drinks reception and a private networking area.

The Diversity Impact Award aims to recognise progress by companies who are improving and championing diversity in all its forms – especially encouraging women and ethnic minorities into the cooling industry. Star has taken strides to improve diversity in the sector not only within the company, but also in the local community and with a global outreach as far as Africa. Star’s sponsorship of the University of Glasgow’s FemEng project – to encourage more women into engineering – has resulted in an increase of over 100% in applications to study engineering at The University of Rwanda.

In collaboration with World Refrigeration Day and STEMazing, Star has supported the development of a network of female STEM ambassadors which includes two of Star’s female engineers. The company also providing funding to guarantee places for five women from Africa on the training programme to empower them to reach school children in Africa. In addition, the company continues to lead by example by providing part time and flexible working opportunities, enhanced maternity, paternity and shared parental leave.

Catherine McCombes, HR Manager at Star Refrigeration, said “Traditionally women are the main caregivers which has been shown to have an adverse effect on career and progression opportunities”

“We believe that by providing enhanced maternity pay as well as real part time and flexible working arrangements to support women in the workplace, encourages a return to their roles. Extending this enhancement to both paternity and shared parental leave is normalising shared leave; enabling either parent to take time off to care for children and lessening the impact on career progression”.

Star’s data-driven analysis software Ethos has played a huge part in receiving the nomination for the environmental collaboration. Over just under five years Star has implemented the technology in Asda’s distribution centres across the UK to help drive down the supermarket’s energy usage.

Ethos collects data from refrigeration plants in real time and the cloud-based software then compares actual operating performance with a computer model of theoretical performance at the given ambient conditions and operating temperatures. This comparison of actual performance with the ’digital twin’, highlights any energy gap and enables the Star Data Analytics (SDA) team to identify problems and suggest corrective actions to reduce energy usage to meet environmental goals. Ethos can help owners of temperature-controlled facilities meet their Climate Change Agreement (CCA) targets, ensuring they receive a 92% reduction on the Climate Change Levy.

Anne Flanagan, Business Development Manager at Star Data Analytics, said “We are delighted to have been nominated for the Environmental Collaboration Award. The partnership between Star, City FM and Asda has delivered an extraordinary outcome which has resulted in savings of 5GWh on energy costs and over 1,100 of CO2 emissions over the last four and a half years across six of Asda’s sites optimised with Ethos software.”

“The nomination reinforces our commitment to working together with our customers as a team to meet their environmental goals”.

In this category, judges will be looking for evidence of how bringing together different disciplines has created a successful outcome – demonstrating contributions beyond simple customer-client relationships.
