ACQUISITION BY NICHIREI LOGISTICS OF NORISH (N.I.) LIMITED AND NORISH LIMITED COMPLETED

Nichirei Logistics Group with headquarters in Tokyo announced in a notice of September 30, 2021, the acquisition of temperature-controlled logistics company Norish (NI) Limited and Norish Limited in the United Kingdom. We can now inform that the procedures for the acquisition were completed on October 29, 2021.

With this acquisition, Nichirei Logistics Group can realise a full-scale entry into the cold store logistics business in the United Kingdom, and at the same time, aim to further expand its business by creating group synergies. Nichirei Logistics Group is already active in the UK through its European subsidiaries Thermotraffic UK Ltd. and Kevin Hancock Ltd.

Norish cold storage is a third-party temperature-controlled storage and logistics provider with extensive expertise and with locations on strategic places. All sites offer storage (including bonded), handling, de-vanning, picking, and packing, cross-docking, and distribution with freezing and other temperature-controlled services available from the cold stores.

“We welcome the Norish team to the Nichirei Logistics Group and are very much looking forward to the future. We are convinced that the combination of Norish, Kevin Hancock and Thermotraffic UK will enable us to offer a one-stop solution to our customers. Besides, we share the same values where people, quality, a can-do mentality, and business partnerships are key. There are great synergy effects, which will boost all our businesses but most important, will give our customers that single point of personal contact together with a high-quality and customer focus level. It is clear for us that by joining our forces we will be the preferred partner for the food industry,” said Rob Haesakkers, managing director of Thermotraffic and the new CEO of Norish Ltd. Kevin Hancock is appointed as COO.

This acquisition will allow all customers but also the wider market, the opportunity to benefit not only from Thermotraffic freight forwarding, import–export (customs) clearing -and supply chain optimisation experience but also from Kevin Hancock with its extended knowledge on blast-freezing, tempering, and microwaving. “Essentially any customer will now be able to take product from anywhere in the world through to storage and final delivery in the United Kingdom but also the EU continent, using only one company for their entire supply chain,” Haesakkers continues.

Holiday Inn Express Fined for Health and Safety Breach

The Holiday Inn Express in Dunstable, Bedfordshire has been fined following a serious health and safety breach.

On 11 November 2018, a Holiday Inn Express employee was instructed by a manager to empty and clean the commercial oil fryer in the kitchen. The member of staff picked up the filled container and was immediately burned from oil melting through the thin plastic container that had been provided for the job. The individual dropped the container onto the floor, slipped and fell into the hot oil, receiving second and third degree burns to their arms, legs and torso, covering approximately 10% of their body.

As a result, the employee is physically scarred and has not worked since, subsequently suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It is a legal duty to ensure the use of a hot oil fryer is risk assessed, control measures put in place, and staff trained and provided with written information and instructions.

The member of staff had not been instructed or trained fully in how to empty the oil fryer in a safe manner. During the emptying, the member of staff was not wearing adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent burns and was given a plastic container to empty the oil into.

The investigation found there was a possibility that the fryer had not been fully switched off from the previous evening’s use and therefore had not cooled down as expected and there was no working thermometer on the fryer to indicate how hot the oil was.

Central Bedfordshire Council prosecuted The Gateway Hotel, Dunstable (known as The Holiday Inn Express) and RBH Hospitality Management for failings under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, sections 2(1) and 3(1), following a breach in their legal duty of care towards a member of staff. Both companies pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay £16,830 in fines and costs.

Councillor Ian Dalgarno, our Executive Member for Community Services, said: “Our investigations found that there were inadequate control measures in place, the correct PPE was not provided for the task and there was a lack of training. As a result of poor health and safety, an individual has been left with permanent physical and mental scars.

“This prosecution sends a message to businesses that, if health and safety laws are breached and members of staff or the public are placed at risk, we will investigate you and prosecute if in the public interest.”

Ray has also been part of the education process regarding BSI’s PAS 13:2017 Code of Practice, which is the first real benchmark for much-needed industry standards, where manufacturers have to demonstrate their dynamic impact testing results and certification.

Ray’s presentation covers workplace transport topics not solely relating to barriers, with a number of published statistics that highlight the importance of identifying risks, and implementing solutions, particularly in shared space environments.

BFFF Lowers its Carbon Footprint with LED Lighting

With the recent COP 26 climate change conference at the forefront, we thought we would update you on the federations contribution in lowering its carbon footprint.

The old office lighting had become significantly less effective with many fluorescent tubes starting to fail and replacement lighting units obsolete, so we have replaced our office lighting panels fitted by local company LS Electrical.

We turned to LED panels which use 85% less energy than the previous fluorescent tube panels. We believe the new LED units will prove a significant cost saving for the federation, with the maintenance free LED lighting paying for itself within 3 years.

To put this into perspective, just replacing a few office lights has the potential to give the Federation a Carbon Saving per month of 0.072 tonne’s CO2 or 0.86 tonne’s CO2 per annum. In addition, there are other advantages such as providing employees with an improved working environment and also reduction in fire risk due to old light fittings failing/overheating.

PREMIUM DOG FOOD BRAND INVESTS IN STATE OF THE ART FREEZING EQUIPMENT

Butternut Box is on a mission to “put the food back into dog food”, using freshly prepared human-quality meat and vegetables for the nation’s much loved pets. Delivered direct to the doors of the pet owners, the company offers homemade, healthy meals that are tailored to the requirements of each individual dog, intended to improve their health conditions and well-being.

The premium pet food brand has a 5-year business growth plan to double sales year on year, a strategy that has driven the company’s success since start up in 2016. A move into a recently acquired industrial unit measuring over 150,000 sq.ft has enabled Butternut Box to invest in the latest technology as the business continues to grow. When it came to expanding production capacity and upgrading its entire static freezing system, Butternut Box selected Starfrost to provide a turn-key cooling solution.

Working in partnership with parent company Star Refrigeration, Starfrost implemented an end to end cooling solution for Butternut Box that has delivered benefits of energy efficiency and improved product quality.

Starfrost designed, manufactured and installed a Double Helix spiral freezer for Butternut Box that operates using an ammonia refrigeration plant supplied by Star Refrigeration. The project benefited from the expertise of the worldwide cooling solutions supplier and the UK’s leading industrial refrigeration company.

The Double Helix spiral freezer has been designed to freeze c.4000kg per hour of vacuum packed dog food pouches, which has assisted Butternut Box in doubling its processing capacity. The automated spiral freezer provides a continuous freezing solution that has allowed Butternut Box to significantly reduce freezing times and improve the quality of its freshly prepared products.

Marco Attanasio, Head of Strategic Projects at Butternut Box says: “Butternut Box has recently made a large investment to implement new technology within our processing line to drive continuous growth of the business.  Our new spiral freezer and refrigeration plant forms part of that strategy and has assisted the business with doubling production this year. The design specification also supports our overall growth plans allowing for future expansion.”

“Since the installation of our new freezing equipment, we have considerably reduced our freezing times in comparison to the static freezers that were used before and the method of freezing is consistent which has greatly improved the quality of our end product.”

Starfrost worked together with Butternut Box to design a freezing solution with high efficiency and low carbon footprint in mind. The Double Helix spiral freezer operates with two separate temperature zones which significantly reduces the total number of kW’s of low temperature refrigeration Butternut Box require to freeze the produce. This reduces the overall operational cost of the refrigeration system and emits less carbon into the atmosphere, whilst improving quality of the packaged products.
