PRODUCT RANGE RATIONALISATION FOR PRINCIPAL LOGISTICS TECHNOLOGIES

Warehouse management software (WMS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software specialist Principal Logistics Technologies is introducing new branding across its suite of products. The new identities are designed to remove complexity and promote consistency across the range following the company’s acquisitions of leading WMS and ERP businesses Brentech Data Systems and Chess Logistics Technology.

“These exciting strategic acquisitions added significant capabilities to our business but also resulted in a number of different product identities,” says Peter Flanagan, founder and Managing Director of Principal Logistics Technologies. “This rebranding will create the consistency that differentiates each product while making our solutions portfolio offer clearer to our growing customer base throughout Ireland and the UK.”

The company’s enterprise-level WMS product is renamed as ProWMS: Advanced Warehouse Management.

ProWMS: Advanced Warehouse Management – previously In-DEX WMS and Empirica WMS –  tailored warehouse management software offering no limits to the functionality required by small and medium enterprises to multinational warehouse operators. ProWMS includes globally patented Blockchain-based UR (Unique Referencing) technology for comprehensive traceability and AI for increased automation. It is a highly flexible, modular system designed for 3PL, distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, and retail warehouse operators. The product is robust and highly configurable to exacting standard and non-standard customer requirements.

The company is also rebranding the three other products in its range.

ProSKU: Cloud-based WMS – previously ProSKU WMS Cloud – affordable, SaaS-based PAYG (pay-as-you-go) warehouse management software suitable for all business types especially 3PL, eCommerce and eFulfilment warehouse operators. ProSKU is quick to set-up and easy to use so staff training is minimised. ProSKU connects with a comprehensive range of eCommerce and carrier integrator platforms. It is web-based with an Android-based application for optimised stock scanning and it can be used to manage a customer’s own stock or by 3PLs.

ProSCM: Advanced Supply Chain Management – previously Chess Socretes – bespoke supply chain management software that is highly configurable to address the needs of enterprise customers requiring WMS functionality with added sales and purchase order processing, purchase forecasting, reconciliation, and transport management capability.

ProERP: Advanced Order Management – previously AWARDS-BA³ ERP – an integrated, modular enterprise resource planning (ERP) software solution designed to enable and support the complex business and stock traceability rules around very high-volume purchasing, sales, handling, and storage requirements common to enterprise-level businesses required to follow robust regulation regimes. Principal Logistics Technologies has longstanding specialist expertise in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare sectors that are required to follow stringent compliance rules.

MOD RECOGNISES REED BOARDALL’S SUPPORT OF THE ARMED FORCES COMMUNITY

Reed Boardall has been accredited with a Bronze award by the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) as an employer that supports defence personnel and inspires others to do the same. Already, the Yorkshire-based logistics business has 23 veterans, serving personnel employed part-time and reservists in the team at its Boroughbridge site.

One of the leading providers of cold storage and distribution services to food producers and retailers across the UK, Reed Boardall’s Bronze award is a demonstration of its pledge to advocate support to defence and the armed forces community, and align its values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

Over the last year, the company has formalised its support of former and serving defence personnel, as well as building links with the prison services to increase the employment of ex-offenders. It has partnered with organisations such as Career Transition Partnership (CTP), Army Families Federation, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), HM Prison Service and People Plus, as well as charities Veteran into Logistics and Clean Slate Solutions.

As a result, the company has introduced a number of initiatives both to actively recruit from these communities and also to ensure that it provides adequate support once people join the Reed Boardall team. It also takes part in recruitment fairs and virtual workshops with CTP and local Regional Resettlement Centres, linking with service personnel going through the resettlement process and giving them an insight into the logistics sector, including Reed Boardall’s Driver Academy.

Daniel Delacoe-Eyre, a veteran who served for over 17 years in a number of regiments before joining Reed Boardall in 2020 to lead its HR operation, comments: “As a former soldier and officer myself, I understand only too well the concerns and even fear felt by service personnel as they contemplate leaving the armed forces. It’s vital that businesses do what they can to ensure there is a job for them when they return to civilian life and we have, therefore, embarked on a pro-active campaign to help them transition into a new career in the logistics sector.

“A number of veterans have enrolled into our Driver Academy where they will gain the skills and qualifications they need to become much-needed HGV drivers, and we have also reviewed our employment policies to incorporate some of the specific support those still serving may need, such as additional leave to take part in army training exercises or operational tours.”

BFFF TO HOST FROZEN FOOD PAVILION AT IFE TO CELEBRATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Members of the British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF) will be brought together for the first-ever Frozen Pavilion at this year’s IFE (International Food Event) to showcase the quality of frozen food and innovative new product lines.

Rupert Ashby, chief executive of the BFFF commented: “We are delighted to host the Frozen Pavilion as part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the BFFF. During the past 75 years, we have consistently represented the interests of the frozen supply chain at the highest levels of industry and government, whilst also promoting the benefits of frozen food to consumers.

“This year’s IFE will be my first as chief executive of the British Frozen Food Federation and I am looking forward to continuing our longstanding support for IFE as one of this year’s event partners.”

The line up of BFFF members exhibiting includes Cargill, Meadow Vale Foods, Seafish UK, Sea Products International, SFC, VIČI and Visual Foods. Mouth-watering samples from exhibiting companies will be cooked up at the Frozen Pavilion, meaning visitors can try some of the nutritious, innovative and tasty frozen products on display.

Mr Ashby added: “Our Frozen Pavilion in the Chilled & Frozen section of the event will showcase the incredible selection of frozen foods available, as well as highlighting the sustainability benefits, nutritional value and affordability of frozen products.”

More than 25,000 visitors are expected at this year’s IFE and almost three-quarters of all visitors have purchasing power. The Frozen Pavilion will present an opportunity for members to meet buyers from across the food industry as part of the BFFF’s continuous work to promote the interests of the frozen food industry.

The BFFF will be exhibiting the Frozen Pavilion at IFE from 20 – 22 March 2023 on stand 5951.

STAR REFRIGERATION CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF RECENT GRADUATES AND ANNOUNCES NATIONWIDE INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The UK’s largest industrial refrigeration contractor has launched its 2023 Apprenticeship Programme, announcing new apprenticeship vacancies in London, Oxford, Bristol, Derby, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Star Refrigeration has announced the opening of its Nationwide Industrial Refrigeration Engineering Apprenticeship Programme and the success of two recent graduates, Jack Flinn and Calum Plunkett. Both have successfully completed Star’s three-year apprenticeship programme, demonstrating their hard work and dedication.

In line with one of the company’s five core values ‘Developing Young People’, the company’s apprenticeship programme provides an opportunity for young people to gain hands-on experience, earn a salary, and achieve qualifications in a fast-growing industry. Industrial refrigeration apprentices at Star Refrigeration receive a competitive salary with six-monthly increments based on key performance indicators, starting at £14,460 per annum when joining and rising to £27,720 in year three.

The apprenticeship programme offers a unique combination of on-the-job training and college-based studies. Apprentices will work full-time and receive hands-on training from Star’s experienced engineers, as well as off-the-job training at college alongside apprentices from other industries. As part of Star’s ‘Work, Earn and Learn’ program, participants will graduate as industrial refrigeration engineers with the practical skills and confidence to work independently in their new career.

The apprenticeship covers a range of topics, including service, maintenance and installation of heavy-duty heating and cooling systems. It also covers important learning in health and safety, system optimisation, fault diagnosis and rectification, electrical systems, and customer care. Apprentices will gain qualifications, including an initial engineering qualification and NVQs at Levels 2 & 3 in Service & Maintenance Engineering.

Upon graduation, successful apprentices will be offered permanent employment as Industrial Refrigeration Engineers with opportunities for further progression through Star’s engineering grading system and development into other areas of the business. Access to further education programmes is also available.

With the ability to mould apprentices to meet the specific needs of the company, Star provides training pathways that focus on fundamental learning and modern engineering techniques, ensuring successful completion of the programme for 95% of apprentices.”

GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES EXTENSION TO THE EXECUTIVE FORMATION PERIOD FOR NI

The UK Government have announced an extension to the period for Executive formation to allow time and space for NI parties to work together to return to government as Protocol discussions continue between the UK and EU.

The existing period for Executive formation under the terms of the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation Act) 2022 came to an end at midnight on 19th January 2023.

The new Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Bill, which was introduced on February 9th now extends the period by a year to 18th January 2024, while retaining the power to name an election date any time during the period,

This placed the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt Hon Chris Heaton-Harris, under a legal duty to hold an Assembly election within 12 weeks but, having spoken to political representatives, businesses, and communities in Northern Ireland, he concluded that another election at this time would not be the best course of action.

The following day Mr Heaton-Harris hosted NI party leaders at a roundtable in Belfast to urge them to restore the Executive as soon as possible. He commented;

“Over a year has passed since the then-First Minister of Northern Ireland resigned. Twelve months and one Assembly election later, it is disappointing that people in Northern Ireland still do not have the strong devolved government that they deserve. The restoration of the Executive, in line with the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement, remains my top priority. I will continue to do everything I can to help the Parties work together to make that happen.”

BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL BEES SECURE THREE-YEAR SPONSORSHIP DEAL

Birmingham & Solihull RFC ‘Bees’ were delighted to hear that they had retained the sponsorship support of local family business Oakland International for the next three-years.

The Bees are effectively a small business with significant overheads including energy costs, pitch and estates maintenance, so having the knowledge that Oakland International have committed to supporting them for another three years means they can continue to plan and develop for future generations of players.

Chair and Head of Senior Rugby at Birmingham & Solihull RFC, Dr Arturo Lupoli or ‘Lou’ explained: “Oakland International’s support for the next 3 years is invaluable as it allows us to invest in our youth section and our infrastructure which, given that much of it was built in the 60’s, requires much tender, loving care. It also means we can employ a physio to support the rehabilitation of injured players and work with them to promote injury prevention.”

The club’s first team have a strong history of semi-professional rugby and although those days are now gone the club is still a vibrant community rugby club. Bees have had a successful youth section, with some players signing professional contracts outside of Bees. One of these was Noah Heward, who now plays for Premiership side Bristol Bears, and is formerly a Worcester Warriors player, playing with many of the current squad at youth level.

Added Lou: “Our new squad is made up of players that have overall, come through our youth system with an average age of under 23. Unfortunately, the pandemic has had a significant impact on numbers, but our ambition is still to play at level 7 of the rugby pyramid by 2025, that’s why so much focus is now on returning our youth section to its former cohort of some 250 youngsters spanning all age groups.”

Oakland International’s Redditch Depot Manager Luke Attwell, and son of owners Dean and Sallie Attwell said: “Oakland have been an avid supporter of the Bee’s for over 15 years, both formally and informally, with former chairman Dai Phillips developing the relationship with my parents when I joined just as a M&J player.

“Although at present I’m rehabilitating from a long-term injury, I am proud to be a player on the senior team having come up through the youth section from the age of 11. Receiving so much support over the years from the club, coaches and volunteers it’s an absolute pleasure to know the business is continuing to support the club. It’s vital that local businesses get involved with community groups and sporting teams which then benefit home-grown players of the future and the wider community through sport.”
