ROYAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING APPOINT STAR REFRIGERATION DIRECTOR AS VISITING PROFESSOR AT EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY

Industrial water source heat pump expert, Dave Pearson, has been honoured with a 3 year visiting tenure to help educate engineering degree students on renewable heat via heat pumps, in an initiative geared towards industry/academia engagement to achieve societal decarbonisation.

Star Refrigeration’s Group Sustainable Development Director, Dave Pearson, has accepted a visiting professorship at Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Computing, Engineering and The Built Environment commencing with immediate effect, as part of a scheme designed to advance student understanding of the potential applications of renewable heat using heat pumps.

Pearson’s tenure follows Star Refrigeration’s longstanding support of the university’s engineering undergraduate programme alongside a number of activities with the university over several years, including a series of guest lectures on industrial heat pumps for district heating and industrial processes.

The three-year professorship awarded by The Royal Academy of Engineering will involve looking at heat pump types and their application, as well as the factors affecting adoption, and will examine future development work to assess how heat pump technology can be improved.

Dave Pearson said, “I am honoured to be the recipient of the Visiting Professorship at Edinburgh Napier University. As we move towards heat decarbonisation, we must prepare the next generation of engineers to create energy infrastructure designed to shift the sector in the right direction quickly enough to achieve net zero”

Pearson has partnered with multiple industry, government and not for profit organisations for over a decade to stress the pivotal role that industrial heat pumps have to play in tackling climate change, inequality and rising energy costs.

Academic Dr Zuansi Cai, an environmental modeller and associate professor at Edinburgh Napier University, is responsible for organising and championing the initiative after securing funding from The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Industrial Fellowship scheme for 2021/2022.

The programme is designed to draw on the experience of Visiting Professors with relevant industry backgrounds, to strengthen external sector partnerships, support sustainability efforts and enhance the employability and skills of UK engineering degree students. Pearson’s primary mission will be to equip students to harness the power of renewable technology to deliver low-carbon, affordable heat to industry and entire communities and help meet the government’s decarbonisation goals.

Dr Zuansi Cai said, “Education must be closely intertwined with the engineering process along every stage, from innovation through to design and deployment. This scheme is important as engineering should not simply have a theoretical focus – it needs practical application and awareness of current social, environmental and regulatory issues to be of most value.”

As part of the Visiting Professorship programme, BEng Energy and Environmental Engineering students will visit a large scale working water source heat pump for district heating designed by Star’s engineering team and take part in a class project evaluating the usage of heat pumps in the community.

Pearson has extensive experience in the sector, having previously worked on river-source heat pump projects around the world, many of which have received wide industry acclaim for their positive impact on sustainability. Recently, two of Star’s district heating heat pump clients have been awarded ‘Heat Pump City of the Year’ consecutively in 2021 and 2022 by the European Heat Pump Association.

One of the award-winning projects involved the implementation of an innovative 5.2 MW water source heat pump system using ambient energy within the River Clyde to provide low-carbon, combustion free heat to homes, offices and businesses in Queens Quay, Clydebank, while another equipped Bristol City with England’s largest water source heat pump.

For almost 15 years, Pearson’s work has been largely focused on the development of industrial scale heat pumps for district heating and industrial business processes. He is a passionate advocate of the technology and regularly advises governments and businesses on the strategic and vital role heat pumps play in delivering a low-carbon economy. He is Chair of the Centre for Education Engineering and Development, a knowledge sharing collective between business and academia with over 160 members in Scotland and member of the Scottish Government’s Energy Advisory Board, Co-Chaired by First Minster Nicola Sturgeon and Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal of the University of Strathclyde.

GUEST MEMBER JUDGE ATTENDS LAST YEAR’S BRITISH FROZEN FOOD AWARDS JUDGING PANEL AT BARNSLEY COLLEGE

For the first time in the history of the awards, the BFFF invited a guest member judge to experience the judging process of the British Frozen Food Awards. Lee Tynan, Food Development Director at Creative Foods, took part in a judging panel at Barnsley food college to understand the complexities involved in judging for the British Frozen Food Awards.

Lee said: “Before I attended the Barnsley panel, I was sceptical of the judging process for the British Frozen Food Awards, so I welcomed the opportunity to attend and understand how the BFFF runs the British Frozen Food Awards judging”.

The British Frozen Food Awards are entering their thirty-fifth edition with some of the biggest names in retail and foodservice taking home the top prizes.

Lee added: “I got the full experience at the panel; the scoring criteria, the way the products were presented by the chefs at Barnsley and the judges assessing each product individually and realistically through the digital marking platform.”

The judging panel marks hundreds of products across two days in Barnsley assessing the taste, appearance, packaging and innovation of each of the products.

Lee’s final comments on his experience of the British Frozen Food Awards judging: “It was a very good eye opener for me. There’s nobody there trying to get you to judge in a particular way. The entire panel was organised and managed by a third-party agency. I don’t think the panel could have been organised any better. The process of the chefs cooking the products and presenting them to the panel to dishing it up to assess the taste was very efficient and can proudly say I enjoyed the entire judging process”.

To ensure full unbiased opinions throughout the judging process, Lee was asked to leave the room in the categories which Creative Foods had entered. By the time Lee came back into the room for the next category, all products were taken away, so Lee did not see any products involved in that category.

The BFFF are very proud of the judging panels for the British Frozen Food Awards and will be looking to invite more guest member judges in the future, to learn about the impressive work the British Frozen Food Award judging panels do for the industry.

Entries are still open until the 30th of November, so make sure you get your products booked – Enter today

STAR REFRIGERATION BACKS NEW CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO CONSIDER TECHNICAL CAREERS

Star’s cooling and heating technicians take part in the Gatsby Foundation’s campaign, ‘Technicians: We Make the Difference’, to help raise awareness of technician careers and the various routes into them.

According to recent reports, the UK needs around 800,000 more technicians and apprentices to meet the economy’s demand for practical science jobs to boost innovation and economic growth. Star Refrigeration is supporting the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s national campaign, ‘Technicians: We Make the Difference’ to inspire young people to consider technical careers across various industries, including industrial cooling and heating.

Technicians are making a difference across society, doing exciting and interesting jobs in almost all industries; from making life-saving vaccines to cooling the data centres that make communications possible across the world. It’s their balance of scientific, engineering, or technological knowledge, along with skills such as attention to detail and critical thinking, that makes technicians special.

Star Refrigeration employs over 100 refrigeration and heating technicians across 11 UK locations and provides technical apprenticeships and fast-track opportunities for young people. Two of the company’s engineers, Sam Gills, and Tom Woolston, who have previously completed Star’s refrigeration engineering apprenticeship, were selected to tell young people aged 11-16 about their fulfilling and enjoyable careers as refrigeration and heating technicians. Their stories have been featured on Gatsby’s new ‘Technicians: We Make the Difference’ website where they both share their experiences as refrigeration and heating technicians to inspire youngsters to consider technical careers.

Sam Gills, Refrigeration Engineer said ‘’I am proud to support Gatsby’s campaign, ‘Technicians: We Make a Difference’. It has been a great experience and I am delighted to have been able to share my experience as a cooling technician and encourage others to consider a career in this rewarding industry. Doing an apprenticeship as a technician is a fantastic opportunity for young people because it allows you to earn a salary while gaining valuable experience and working towards a qualification.

Industrial refrigeration is a great trade to work in. Those interested in making the world a more sustainable place must look no further as the cooling sector underpins the delivery of essential components of many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Research by Gatsby shows that while parents are becoming more supportive of technical education routes and qualifications, such as T-Levels, many (40%) still do not understand what a technician is. Furthermore, two thirds (66%) say their child has expressed an interest in a future career that they know very little about.

Astrid Prado, Head of Marketing at Star Refrigeration said, “Together with Gatsby, we want to help parents and young people learn more about technician careers options and routes available.

Cooling and heating is a key sector for action in the UN’s Race to Zero emissions campaign and the need for qualified technicians is extraordinary. With demand for food, data, medicines and comfort cooling expected to rise in the next few decades to accommodate population growth, there has never been a better time to join this exciting industry”.

Founded in 1967 by David Sainsbury, the Gatsby Foundation also launched ‘Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery’ at the London Science Museum on the 3rd November 2022.

Star Refrigeration offers young people apprenticeships in refrigeration engineering to support them on their journey to becoming a technician.
