Sysco companies, Brakes and M&J Seafood, have been rewarded for their passionate focus on the quality, sustainability and provenance of their seafood, collecting the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year award for the 9th consecutive year.

Sysco is committed to supporting customers to create more sustainable and healthier menus, from the way ingredients are sourced and produced, to their handling through the supply chain and menu development. When sourced responsibly, fish and seafood can be a fantastic ingredient with strong nutritional values. Working with organisations and certifications including MSC, MCS and ASC, Brakes and M&J Seafood have developed an enviable range of sustainably sourced seafood, winning the MSC Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year every year since the awards were launched in 2014.

Sysco GB Merchandising Director, Stuart Smith, said: “We have unique expertise in fish, with M&J’s long-established reputation for sourcing the best of the catch and Brakes’ unrivalled scale and foodservice knowledge, providing customers access to an incredible foodservice fish proposition.

“While it’s fantastic that we’ve been awarded Foodservice Wholesaler of the Year for the past nine years, we are committed to continuing to build the category, bringing customers new, exciting and sustainable fish options that will enhance any menu.”

Brakes and M&J Seafood have continued to innovate in the seafood category, including introducing new MSC British coley, Jersey MSC lobster and converting all breaded plaice to MSC certified in the past year.

GOURD NEWS FOR FRIGHT NIGHT FRIES FREAKS!

Here’s some scary Halloween food news for you from Lamb Weston, Cambridgeshire-based producer of potato products and fries for the UK’s most popular burger chain: In the UK up to 8 million pumpkins will come to a grave end this year, with 18,000 tonnes of edible food going straight to the bin!

Only 1 in 3 consumers choose to cook the flesh once carved, meaning the rest (66%) are wasted, not tasted.

Even more horrifying, pumpkins generate up to 448g CO2 equivalent per kilo – so they’re gruesome for greenhouse gas emissions too.

Enter Lamb Weston with a clever trick that could dramatically cut down on food waste and save up to 1.6m tonnes of CO2 per year – carving potatoes instead of pumpkins!

Cheaper to buy and easier to carve, potatoes are the UK’s favourite vegetable to eat^ and much more versatile for turning into a tasty meal after carving!  Plus potatoes generate less than half the CO2 per kilo produced compared to a pumpkin.

Believe it or not, this isn’t a new idea as the original Jack-o’-lanterns were actually made from turnips and potatoes by the Irish!**

So it’s time to rethink old habits that are unhealthy for our planet and all hail the potato this Halloween. Take a look at some of our ideas, carve out some of your own and then love the leftovers in a delicious fright-night feast.  Gourd for you and gourd for the planet too!

ICELAND CELEBRATES 4 MILLION TRANSACTIONS FOR OVER 60s DISCOUNT

Iceland’s over 60s discount is proving popular with over 4 million transactions made since the discount was introduced in May. With over 630,000 shoppers using the discount in the first 4 weeks alone.

Every Tuesday, all those who are aged 60 and over can bag 10% off their shop, with no minimum spend, across Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores. Iceland Foods is the first and only supermarket in the UK to be offering this type of discount as it continues to help its shoppers tackle the rising costs of living.

On the first day of the discount, over a third of shoppers who came through Iceland or The Food Warehouse doors used the discount with over 150,000 eligible customers benefitting.

At a store in Manchester, customers aged 60 and over have been flocking to the store on a Tuesday to take advantage of the discount. One customer said, “when you’re coming for a bulk shop, it is quite a big saving” and another said, “It does make a big difference” regarding their weekly food shop.

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact shoppers baskets, shoppers in Urmston, Manchester, have been changing their habits to cut costs with one shopper saying, “I think everyone is looking to save a little bit here and there”, and another explaining how she tries “to get something that isn’t going to take too long to cook”.

Richard Walker, Managing Director at Iceland, said: “We are so pleased at how well the Over 60s discount has been received by the public and love hearing stories from customers who are benefiting from the discount. The cost-of-living crisis continues to cause distress in the everyday lives of these customers and that’s why we want to keep doing what we can to support them.”

The over 60s offer has also helped to bring communities together. At an Iceland store in Caernarfon, two women who are eligible for the discount were seen by a staff member having a hug, with tears in their eyes, after not seeing one another for a long time.

Iceland has found that almond frangipanes is the most popular item sold on Tuesdays, signalling that the vintage cake is still in fashion with the over 60s.

Shoppers who are craving the classic treat, can get Mica Belgian Frangipanes Almond Flavoured Cakes (4pk) for just £1.00 in-store and online at Iceland and The Food Warehouse.

Mica’s Almond Cakes isn’t the only product flying off the shelves since the discount. All categories have seen uplifts of up to 15% showing that customers are stocking up on groceries as well as shopping for their weekly essentials across chilled and frozen.

The 10% discount is available in-store only and to receive the over 60s discount, shoppers simply need to show proof of age at the checkout, which could be a driving license, senior bus pass, senior rail card or Freedom Pass.

DATA LINES… ITS NOT BINARY BABY!

To audit and reconcile to a high level of accuracy you need to collect the data associated with the thing you want to audit, verify the data collected (so you are sure it is what it purports to be) and then transform that data into something that you can easily work with, or that will provide insights that the original data would not readily provide. In a sense this is the other half of Salitix’s USP, our skill and experience in identifying, extracting (and verifying) and then transforming data for reconciliation, the other being our commercial audit experience, i.e. our ability to understand what the trade is supposed to achieve…

The glory goes to the audit teams who find the money, or defend the high-profile claim. But the real work begins long before there is any glory in sight. It starts with an experienced team of computer scientists, data analysts, SQL engineers and software developers who really understand how an accounting system works, both legacy and new, who write the code to get a required extract, who develop the routines to enable seamless ETL’s and create interfaces that allow an auditor to   interrogate data to deliver the reconciled output.

When a supplier agrees to work with Salitix, they are also obtaining a health check on their systems, their data and way of working – which often reveals useful insights that can be of value to the business in real time. Not only this, but the supplier is also creating a high quality repository for specific kinds of data that can and normally are, lost to the business, but which are crucial for defending the claims they might receive, or for conducting their own sales audit reconciliation.

Nobody wants to dwell on the past but having your past under your control and at your fingertips is certainly good business practice when you’re serious about the future.

ASG SERVICES NEW PROJECTED SAFETY SOLUTIONS

Hot on the heels of its pioneering move into the commercial Solar Photovoltaic (PV) sector, ASG Services, the labelling and integrated safety solutions specialist, is expanding its operations even further with the launch of another innovative new product, Laserglow Projected Safety Solutions.

Projected Safety Solutions has only been launched this summer. The system is the safe and effective way of communicating information onto the floor or wall of a warehouse with pinpoint accuracy. Working in tandem with traditional line marking solutions, the technology helps to create an enhanced safety environment within any warehouse.

The system has been specially designed for high-performance environments, such as warehouses where heavy equipment and machinery can be in constant operation. In such environments it is essential for pedestrian safety that walkways, aisles, or lanes are clearly defined to ensure the safe movement of people, both within the facility and outside.

The solution relies on the revolutionary Laserglow technology, which projects high-resolution beams of light, shapes and signage straight onto the warehouse floor or wall instantly highlighting floor zones and walkways without the need to overlay paint or tape onto the floor surface. In the same way, highly visible safety signage can either be projected onto the floor surface or walls of the warehouse.

Chris Hopkirk, Sales Director, ASG Services said: “The ability to instantly project laser-accurate lines, shapes and signage onto any surface is a gamechanger for the warehouse industry. The high intensity beams of light will never fade, peel, crack or erode saving operators time and money on their repair bills and speeding up their return on investment.

“Working in conjunction with traditional line marking it helps to create an effective safety environment that protects workforces and keeps stock secure.”

The solution adapts to suit the specifics of any warehouse. The VirtuaLine Walkways and Line Lasers solution projects line striping and clearly defined virtual walkways onto any floor surface and while suitable for a broad range of industrial environments, is especially effective in warehouses.

The unique floor marking method uses either a high-intensity beam or a high visibility projector to create a virtual walkway. These can be projected onto any surface, indoors or externally. Using lightweight and flexible units, the system is easy to set up and has an IP65+ rating meaning it has the highest level of dust protection as well as being capable of withstanding low-pressure water jets.

VirtuaLine Key Features:

  • Modular Unit – Easily reconfigure spaces within a warehouse facility without stripping paint or tape
  • Highly Durable – No wear and tear from repeated and heavy foot traffic
  • Cost Effective – Eliminates the need for repainting or retaping
  • Ultra-Visible – Improves safety and overcomes any complacency by attracting more attention because of a dynamic projection
  • Smart Triggered – The optional capability to trigger signage using motion sensors, beam break sensors or a push button

Warehouse floors and other industrial environments often utilise taped, painted or adhesive-applied safety signage. However, these static signs can be easily obscured by racking, pallets, machinery or just wear over time. This poses a health and safety risk to workers who may not abide by the safety signage if it is not prominently displayed.

This scenario can be eliminated with Laserglow’s SafetyCast Virtual Sign Projectors. The system projects highly visible signage onto floor and wall locations where there is high traffic, potential for a hazard, or uneven floors. The SafetyCast projector uses an image lens and a high-output LED bulb to project a clear sign at distances of up to 70m (230ft). The projectors work effectively in almost all lighting conditions and are easy to mount and adjust. As with the VirtuaLine system, once installed, the projectors require virtually no maintenance, and eliminates the need to replace damaged signs.

SafetyCast Key Features:

  • Highly Durable – No wear and tear from repeated and foot traffic
  • Cost Effective – Eliminates the need for repainting or purchasing new signage
  • Ultra-Visible – Improves safety and overcomes any complacency by attracting more attention because of a dynamic projection
  • Smart Triggered – The optional capability to trigger signage using motion sensors, beam break sensors or a push button
  • Easily interchangeable – Simply change the image projection lens when there is a need to project new signage

“ASG Services’ desire to bring the latest innovations in warehouse technology to its customers has seen us deliver some groundbreaking new products. We think our Projected Safety Solutions is a gamechanger for the warehouse industry and we look forward to telling our customers more about it when we showcase the technology during IMHX,” said Mr Hopkirk.

FSA CONSULTATION: PROPOSED CHANGES TO FOOD STANDARDS DELIVERY MODEL

The FSA have launched a consultation seeking stakeholders’ views on proposed changes to the Food Law Code of Practice in England, to implement a new food standards delivery model.

The main proposals involve fundamental changes to the food standards delivery model within the Code, and associated content, namely the introduction of a:

  • new food standards intervention rating scheme that LA officers will use to evaluate the risk posed by a food business
  • new decision matrix to determine the frequency at which food standards official controls should be delivered in line with the outcome of the risk assessment

The proposed policy changes described above are intended to enable LAs to:

  • reduce the number of harmful or non-compliant products on the market
  • more effectively target available resources to the areas of greatest risk within the supply chain
  • have greater flexibility to determine the appropriate official control method/s and technique/s to use depending on the risk posed by a business

To find out more and view the full consultation pack, click here.

The deadline for responding to the consultation is midnight 9th January 2023.
