FSA update on mustard contamination of wheat

The BFFF Technical team recently attended an FSA meeting where an update on mustard contamination in wheat was provided. Below is a summary issued by the FSA following that meeting:

  • Italy have confirmed their position is precautionary: based on anecdotal evidence from Ireland and concerns around the accuracy of existing tests for identifying the presence of mustard within foodstuffs.
  • We will not be producing any guidance on this specific issue: our understanding is that it is based solely on anecdotal evidence; there have been no RASSF or INFOSAN reports of European consumers experiencing adverse reactions; no compelling explanation has been provided as to why the 2021/2022 harvest would be significantly contaminated; ELISA tests for mustard cross-react and there is concern that certain confirmatory PCR tests may also cross-react. (However, our scientific methods colleagues have assessed validation reports from Eurofins for their mustard PCR test and have confirmed it does not cross-react with oil seed rape),
  • It is the responsibility of food businesses to risk assess allergen cross-contact within their supply chains.
  • The FSA does not set thresholds for deterministic risk assessments and food businesses can apply other forms of risk assessment (e.g., probabilistic) – as long as the food they sell is safe.
  • We are commissioning a literature review of analytical methodologies available for allergen testing (for the 14 regulated allergens), including limitations of the methods, cost effectiveness, reporting units and analytical threshold levels for different matrices, which will be completed this financial year.
  • We are conducting a review of the Codex Expert Committee’s full report of recommendations for threshold levels for the Codex priority allergens that is due to be published this autumn, which will help inform a consultation on a workable system for applying PAL to prepacked foods planned for 2024/25.

STAR APPRENTICE MAKES RAC AND IOR STUDENT OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST

Refrigeration engineering apprentice based at Star Refrigeration’s Derby branch, Kelvin Clamp, has been shortlisted for the prestigious RAC Magazine and IOR Student of the Year award which will be announced at a ceremony on 22nd September in London.

The highly regarded RAC and IOR Student of the Year award recognises an apprentice who has gone above and beyond their expected duties and has shown exceptional ability in the field of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating. The award is a partnership between the Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) and RAC Magazine, judged by a panel of industry experts.

Announced as one of the six finalists shortlisted for the award, Kelvin Clamp joined Star Refrigeration’s Operations team in Derby in August 2020 as a refrigeration engineering apprentice. Opting for the ‘earn as you learn’ route, Kelvin attends Derby College to undertake his academic learning.

His drive for building a successful career in Industrial Cooling and Heating has not gone unnoticed. Both his lecturers and his colleagues at Star Refrigeration have been impressed with his knowledge, enthusiasm and keen work ethic.

Dave Bartlett, Operations Training Manager at Star Refrigeration said “As Kelvin’s training manager, attending regular training provider review meetings has been a pleasure. Always polite, timely in arrival and working to deadlines, Kelvin has been referred to on many an occasion as the ‘perfect student’. It came as no surprise when feedback from his lecturers were that he is already working to level 4 standards having not yet completed his level 3. I’m sure Kelvin will prove a great asset to the business and will have a long and rewarding career ahead of him.’’

On his apprenticeship experience so far, Kelvin Clamp said ”I’ve always been a hands on person who likes tinkering and finding out how things work – working within the industrial refrigeration field allows me to do this. Since I’ve been at Star Refrigeration, I’ve had the opportunity to carry out maintenance and service works on plant and equipment, with the assistance of senior engineers. In the last 6 months I have been working onsite. In this time my knowledge of ammonia systems has developed immensely and I feel confident in undertaking a variety of tasks’’.

Star Refrigeration advocates training and promotes youth employment through its top rated apprenticeship scheme which has produced award winning engineers since 1970. More recently, Star apprentices have received a number of accolades including The IOR Scotland Apprentice of the Year Awards, Bronze Medal at Worldskills UK, Student of the Year at the RAC Cooling Awards and ACR Trainee of the Year.

The RAC and IOR Student of the Year winner will be announced at an award ceremony in London’s Grosvenor House Ballroom on 22 September and will receive a cash prize of £1,000 along with a supercar thrill driving experience. The top three entries, who will each receive cash prizes starting at £150 will also be recognised, along with their employers during the award ceremony.

Attendees that are focussing on healthier reformulations, going vegan or reducing their ingredient cost base should pop by the AAK stand to discuss their challenges with our team. We will also be sampling our delicious vegan fudge made with our plant-based butter alternative, which is suitable for use wherever butter is currently used. CELEBRATING 34 YEARS OF PARAMOUNT

This month it’s our 34th birthday; find out what’s new at Paramount this year, from sustainability and community support to our latest product awards.

Paramount started with an investment of £3,500, second-hand machinery, determination, and a lot of faith! We now supply a range of innovative vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and seafood products across the globe.

Sustainability and community support have always been at the heart of what we do. But, this year, these have been more important than ever.

2022 marks our first year as an accredited Living Wage employer, committing to paying all staff the real Living Wage. This is a voluntary rate, the only rate based on the real cost of living.

This year Paramount has also been working with FareShare to reduce food waste and fight hunger. FareShare is a charity that redistributes surplus food to charities and community groups across the UK. So far we have donated over 19,000 meals, reaching over 800 charities.

As well as helping to reduce food waste, donating surplus products can also have a positive environmental impact. Paramount’s donated meals saved over 12 tonnes of C02e and over 120 million litres of water from going to waste.*

Over the year, we’ve also celebrated a Gold Taste of the West award for our new vegan Pea & Mint Fritters, Silver for our new vegetarian Mozzarella Bites, as well as our MSC Smoked Haddock & Mozzarella Fishcakes, and a Highly Commended for our Butternut, Goat’s Cheese & Beet Burger.

Despite the challenging times, we’re excited about the year to come, and building on the recipe we’ve created for success.

For more information on Paramount products, to request a call from our sales team or any other enquiries, get in touch at info@paramount21.co.uk.
