EFSA PUBLISHES RE-EVALUATION OF RISKS RELATED TO BPA IN FOOD

EFSA’s Scientific Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) have published a re‐evaluation of the risks to public health related to the presence of bisphenol A (BPA) in foodstuffs.

In 2015, EFSA established a temporary tolerable daily intake (t‐TDI) for BPA of 4 μg/kg body weight (bw) per day. In 2016, the European Commission mandated EFSA to re‐evaluate the risks to public health from the presence of BPA in foodstuffs and to establish a tolerable daily intake (TDI).

The CEP Panel concluded that it is Unlikely to Very Unlikely that BPA presents a genotoxic hazard through a direct mechanism. However, taking into consideration the evidence from animal data and support from human observational studies, the immune system was identified as most sensitive to BPA exposure.

As a result, the Panel have significantly lowered the TDI to 0.2 ng BPA/kg bw per day. By comparing the new TDI with estimates of dietary exposure to BPA, the Panel concluded that consumers with both average and high exposure to BPA in all age groups exceeded the new TDI, indicating health concerns.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE DRAFT FOOD HYGIENE DELIVERY MODEL

The Food Standards Agency has launched a 12-week consultation seeking views on the proposed developments for a modernised food hygiene delivery model (FHDM).

The aim is to develop a model that is fit for the future and ensures that the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) continues to operate successfully and maintains consumer confidence.

Stakeholders’ views are sought on the following proposed developments:

  • A modernised food hygiene intervention rating scheme, including a decision matrix, to determine the appropriate frequency of food hygiene controls based on the risk posed by a food business establishment.
  • An updated risk-based approach to the timescales for initial official controls of new food establishments, and for undertaking due official controls.
  • Increased flexibility as to the methods and techniques of official controls that can be used to risk rate an establishment, including the appropriate use of remote assessment.
  • Extending the activities that officers, such as Regulatory Support Officers, who do not hold a ‘suitable qualification’ for food hygiene can, if competent, undertake.

The consultations for EnglandWales and Northern Ireland are available on the FSA website and will run until 30 June 2023.

They are open to local authorities and district councils, food business operators, third-party assurance organisations for food safety, professional awarding bodies for environmental health and trading standards, trade unions and other interested groups.

LF&E REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT PURSUES ELECTRIFICATION WITH SOLAR-POWERED TITAN FROM MARSHALL FLEET SOLUTIONS

LF&E Refrigerated Transport, one of the UK’s leading specialist refrigerated logistics companies, is joining a growing list of transport companies reducing their environmental impact by adopting Marshall Fleet Solutions’ award-winning 100% solar powered Titan system.

Known for its expertise in delivering pharmaceutical products in compliance with the MHRA and the UK’s strict GDP (Good Distribution Practice) requirements, Leeds-based LF&E has expanded rapidly since its establishment in 2008 and now operates a fleet of over 200 dual temperature controlled light commercial vehicles from a nationwide network of 13 depots.

Last year, the company’s fleet collectively travelled more than 9 million kilometres over nearly 300,000 hours, making over 700,000 deliveries to patients, hospitals and businesses around the UK. As a responsible business with a firm commitment to minimising its carbon footprint, LF&E sees reducing the environmental impact of its operations as a crucial task, especially as the business continues to grow.

LF&E has therefore been exploring a range of options to electrify its fleet while still avoiding practicality issues such as range and charging infrastructure. Since the company has already been working extensively with Marshall Fleet Solutions since 2010, partnering on fleet electrification was a natural fit for all involved.

“We are delighted to be adding a solar powered fridge van to our fleet,” says LF&E CEO Jason Buckley. “Given the practical requirements and demanding operating conditions of our fleet, we needed to find an approach that fits our specific needs. Marshall Fleet Solutions helped us explore a range of options and supported us from start to finish.”

LF&E opted to install the Titan system on a diesel vehicle initially, as this will still substantially reduce CO2 emissions by eliminating the need having to have the vehicles running on “Ignition Key Out” or being plugged in whilst loading or on ferries. The next stage for the company would be to install such a system on a hybrid van, followed ultimately by an electric van. This approach underscores the flexibility of the Titan product, which provides a perfect option for fleet operators who may need to shift incrementally to electrification.

The addition of the Titan system to LF&E’s fleet further deepens a longstanding relationship based on solid fundamentals of expertise and dedication to unmatched customer service: roughly 80% of the current LF&E fleet is comprised of Thermo King vehicles under the Marshall Assist service contract with Marshall Fleet Solutions.

RAPID CLAIMS PROCESS PRODUCES SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT FOR LAKESIDE FOOD GROUP

Intro to the client

The Lakeside Food Group is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of innovative, high quality chilled and frozen products to the retail, manufacturing, and food service sectors. Relationship with Ayming

When approached by Ayming about a potential R&D Tax claim, Lakeside didn’t think they would qualify as they had never claimed for the benefit before. Ayming provided guidance to Lakeside on the types of activities they were carrying out that could qualify as eligible expenditure.

What Ayming did

Due to the size and nature of Lakeside’s business and innovation activity, they were eligible for Ayming’s Rapid Claims service, which delivers an R&D Tax claim from start to finish and submission in just 5 days.

Ayming’s Rapid Claim consulting team worked with Lakeside’s product experts and finance team to identify the qualifying projects to include in the final claim submission. These projects focused on New Product Development activities, including new cooking processes for a Beef and Pork Wellington; how to achieve the correct level of “doneness” for rare beef and well-done pork within the same recipe. Ayming also identified R&D activity in preventing the physical properties of pastry and beef from being impacted in the product’s frozen, defrosted, and cooked states.

The results

The Rapid Claims’ process delivered the R&D Tax final calculation and accompanying report to submit to HMRC in just five days. Lakeside realised a significant benefit, even more so as they had not previously claimed.

We hadn’t previously claimed for R&D Tax credits before talking to Ayming. We didn’t believe that we were eligible. However, when talking to Ayming’s expert Food & Beverage team they were able to identify qualifying projects within our new product development, which meant a significant financial benefit for us. And the extra bonus was that we were able to complete the entire claim and report in 5 days.
