THE AUTHENTICITY AND TRADITION OF PORTUGUESE MARKET

The Gamma Saudade is part of Europastry; originating in Lisbon. It consists of Portugal’s most iconic products, such as the Pastel de Nata. This is a flaky puff pastry cake made with egg yolks, milk and sugar encasing a special custard crème brulee filling. Europastry uses a production process which allows them to obtain an even crispier puff pastry, laminated with 100% butter.

The Pastel de Nata is undoubtedly Portugal’s most emblematic product, following a traditional recipe, they also come in a range of varieties that can be adapted to different consumers.

Europastry has a large range of different flavours and sizes of the Pastel de Nata. They have the Pastel de Nata Caprice an Artisan style cream puff pastry, made with butter and a traditional recipe for the filling, which is characterized by its softness and notes of lemon and cinnamon.

Europastry also have a Cheesecake version, The Pastel de Nata Cheesecake is crispy and light, with a delicate filling of Philadelphia cheese and red fruit compote, which provides a delicious flavour and contrast; the filling being 70% of the entire pastry.

Introducing the Forest Berry Pastel De Nata. This pastry is made with vegetable margarine and no partially hydrogenated fats. A perfect combination of the Europastry crispy puff pastry, with velvety cream custard tart infused with fruits of the forest. This has a 69% filling that gives the aroma and flavour of freshly picked fruit.

Using the inspiration of fruit; the Pastel de Nata Manzana has 70% filling, with real pieces of Jonagold apples (13%). Puff pastry base laminated with margarine, very light and crispy. Made with free-range eggs.

For the customers who prefer a vegan option, Europastry have created Vegan Pastel de Nata. With no less than a 69% custard filling, this is also an ideal pastry for those who are lactose intolerant.

BRAKES SWITCHES ON LATEST RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIATIVE

Brakes has taken the next step in its ambitious plans to harness natural energy across its estate with a solar array at the company’s Aylesford depot, following a successful installation at its Harlow depot last year.

The new, 2,400 solar panel system will provide almost a quarter of the site’s energy requirement and will save the equivalent of approximately 200 tonnes of carbon every year. It is the latest step towards the science-based targets set out by Sysco, Brakes’ parent company, to cut carbon emissions by 27.5% between 2019 and 2030, and to move to 100% renewable electricity.

The Aylesford project is part of a phased programme of renewable energy projects that will see the company generate renewable energy at sites across Great Britain.

Peter Owen, Sysco GB Engineering and Environment Director, said: “We are helping to meet Sysco’s challenging global carbon reduction goals by tackling the energy consumption in our own transport and infrastructure here in Britain. We’ve seen this work well in Harlow with our first 1MW solar array. Now, our ambition is to roll this out and install solar wherever possible across our estate – generating our own source of renewable, clean energy. This is key to our decarbonisation strategy.”

The new installation supports Sysco’s ambitious, science-based climate goal to reduce emissions across its global operations and the company’s entire value chain. It will see the company reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 27.5% by 2030, and ensure that suppliers covering 67% of Sysco’s Scope 3 emissions establish science-based targets by 2026.

UPDATE: FIRE RISK ON LPG FORKLIFT TRUCKS – HSE HAS NOW RELEASED SAFETY NOTICE!

Following a BFFF member company raising concerns over an LPG fork lift fire, we contacted the HSE in early May and raised concerns that this issue had not been heavily publicised. The HSE outlined ongoing investigations and assured us of an imminent HSE Safety notice which is now available.

The notice is aimed at anyone responsible operating, supplying, inspecting or maintaining LPG powered forklift trucks.

The action for companies and operators includes:

  • Review your safe system of work in relation to the use of all LPG powered lift trucks and similar vehicles
  • provide information, instruction and training for all operators about the hazards raised in this alert
  • park LPG vehicles in well ventilated areas free from flammable material, particularly when parking overnight or for longer periods

If you are presented with an LPG powered truck with a starting problem:

  • do NOT follow the normal starting procedure
  • isolate the LPG supply by closing the shut off valve
  • ensure that the area is well ventilated
  • disconnect the battery
  • release LPG pressure trapped in the fuel supply system
  • follow the manufacturer’s guidance for inspection of the LPG system

FROZEN FOOD SECTOR’S WASTE EFFORTS SHOW NO SIGNS OF FREEZING, ACCORDING TO COMPANY SHOP GROUP

The UK’s largest redistributor of surplus food, Company Shop Group, has today revealed that by working in close partnership with frozen food businesses in 2022, it helped to save more stock from going to waste than ever before.

Since 2020, the Group has seen a 22% increase in the frozen stock it has handled and redistributed for the sector, providing a financial return on otherwise costly waste streams, whilst benefiting people and planet.

The Group works in close collaboration with flagship businesses across the frozen sector, including Birds Eye, Moy Park, Unilever, and McCain to provide bespoke and sustainable surplus solutions which guarantee brand integrity. Further supporting the sector to advance on its ambitious sustainability targets, the Group has recently extended its reach by joining forces with the likes of SFC, General Mills (inc. Haagen-Dazs) and Lotus Biscoff.

To achieve significant progress in the tonnes of food being prevented from waste each year, Company Shop has helped businesses across the cold chain to unlock the social, environmental, and financial potential of otherwise costly waste streams. This includes performing a range of expert technical interventions on surplus stock to ensure it is safe to eat and can reach people’s plates as intended, whilst helping businesses to maximise their assets during an economically challenging time.

Some of the most utilised surplus solutions for the frozen sector in recent years include the relabelling of products for life extensions; handling market delists, seasonal lines and product specification changes; taking food service products, and having own label approval for all retailers.

As one partnership example amongst many, the Group has worked in close collaboration with an ice cream producer to relabel products that were originally destined for international markets, to ensure that the products would meet UK trading standards upon redistribution.

The UK’s frozen food sector is renowned for its innovation, alongside its long-standing commitment to sustainability, with 98% of BFFF members recently declaring this as their top business priority. With the frozen sector forecasted for growth in the coming years, aided by an increase in consumer preferences for the sustainability and affordability of products, Company Shop Group is urging frozen businesses to remain forward-thinking and ahead of the curve when it comes to their resource and waste management processes.

To build on last year’s impressive food waste reduction efforts, Company Shop Group is standing ready to support even more frozen businesses to identify sustainable solutions for their surplus stock which will help to protect profit, people and planet when its needed most. This includes through its commercial redistribution offering via Company Shop – which returned £39million to the industry last year – and by donating stock to its award-winning social enterprise, Community Shop, to help transform communities and lives.

The BFFF Technical Expert Group will be holding their second hybrid meeting of the year on June 7th at the Newark Showground, in Lincolnshire.
