LF&E REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT PURSUES ELECTRIFICATION WITH SOLAR-POWERED TITAN FROM MARSHALL FLEET SOLUTIONS

LF&E Refrigerated Transport, one of the UK’s leading specialist refrigerated logistics companies, is joining a growing list of transport companies reducing their environmental impact by adopting Marshall Fleet Solutions’ award-winning 100% solar powered Titan system.

Known for its expertise in delivering pharmaceutical products in compliance with the MHRA and the UK’s strict GDP (Good Distribution Practice) requirements, Leeds-based LF&E has expanded rapidly since its establishment in 2008 and now operates a fleet of over 200 dual temperature controlled light commercial vehicles from a nationwide network of 13 depots.

Last year, the company’s fleet collectively travelled more than 9 million kilometres over nearly 300,000 hours, making over 700,000 deliveries to patients, hospitals and businesses around the UK. As a responsible business with a firm commitment to minimising its carbon footprint, LF&E sees reducing the environmental impact of its operations as a crucial task, especially as the business continues to grow.

LF&E has therefore been exploring a range of options to electrify its fleet while still avoiding practicality issues such as range and charging infrastructure. Since the company has already been working extensively with Marshall Fleet Solutions since 2010, partnering on fleet electrification was a natural fit for all involved.

“We are delighted to be adding a solar powered fridge van to our fleet,” says LF&E CEO Jason Buckley. “Given the practical requirements and demanding operating conditions of our fleet, we needed to find an approach that fits our specific needs. Marshall Fleet Solutions helped us explore a range of options and supported us from start to finish.”

LF&E opted to install the Titan system on a diesel vehicle initially, as this will still substantially reduce CO2 emissions by eliminating the need having to have the vehicles running on “Ignition Key Out” or being plugged in whilst loading or on ferries. The next stage for the company would be to install such a system on a hybrid van, followed ultimately by an electric van. This approach underscores the flexibility of the Titan product, which provides a perfect option for fleet operators who may need to shift incrementally to electrification.

The addition of the Titan system to LF&E’s fleet further deepens a longstanding relationship based on solid fundamentals of expertise and dedication to unmatched customer service: roughly 80% of the current LF&E fleet is comprised of Thermo King vehicles under the Marshall Assist service contract with Marshall Fleet Solutions.

“Our relationship with Marshall Fleet Solutions goes all the way back to the delivery of its first Thermo King vehicle,” adds Jason. “Due to the delicate nature of the goods we carry, minimising vehicle downtime is absolutely crucial. We are always in safe hands with Marshall Fleet Solutions thanks to their thorough servicing, excellent technical ability, and prompt assistance.

“We are excited to take this important next step towards fleet electrification with the Titan system, and are grateful to Marshall Fleet Solutions for their support and partnership.”

“LF&E’s decision is a resounding validation of the strength of the Titan system and our broader approach to providing customers with a wide range of renewable refrigeration solutions. We look forward to continuing to assist LF&E as they embrace electrification within their fleet.” Commented Marshall Fleet Solutions National Sales Manager, Maria D’Andrea.

RAPID CLAIMS PROCESS PRODUCES SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT FOR LAKESIDE FOOD GROUP

Intro to the client

The Lakeside Food Group is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of innovative, high quality chilled and frozen products to the retail, manufacturing, and food service sectors. Established in Norfolk in 1989, today they employ more than 40 colleagues across the UK, EU and Asia. Lakeside is a significant player in the food market with a reputation for quality, innovation and integrity.

Relationship with Ayming

When approached by Ayming about a potential R&D Tax claim, Lakeside didn’t think they would qualify as they had never claimed for the benefit before. Ayming provided guidance to Lakeside on the types of activities they were carrying out that could qualify as eligible expenditure.

What Ayming did

Due to the size and nature of Lakeside’s business and innovation activity, they were eligible for Ayming’s Rapid Claims service, which delivers an R&D Tax claim from start to finish and submission in just 5 days.

Ayming’s Rapid Claim consulting team worked with Lakeside’s product experts and finance team to identify the qualifying projects to include in the final claim submission. These projects focused on New Product Development activities, including new cooking processes for a Beef and Pork Wellington; how to achieve the correct level of “doneness” for rare beef and well-done pork within the same recipe. Ayming also identified R&D activity in preventing the physical properties of pastry and beef from being impacted in the product’s frozen, defrosted, and cooked states.

The results

The Rapid Claims’ process delivered the R&D Tax final calculation and accompanying report to submit to HMRC in just five days. Lakeside realised a significant benefit, even more so as they had not previously claimed.

We hadn’t previously claimed for R&D Tax credits before talking to Ayming. We didn’t believe that we were eligible. However, when talking to Ayming’s expert Food & Beverage team they were able to identify qualifying projects within our new product development, which meant a significant financial benefit for us. And the extra bonus was that we were able to complete the entire claim and report in 5 days.

Bullying in the workplace: Lessons to be learned

After being accused of eight bullying complaints involving 24 civil servants over four years, Dominic Raab resigned from his positions as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary last month. These complaints alleged he was verbally abusive towards staff, undermined their work and created a hostile working environment, which were partly upheld by independent investigation reports.

We outline the actions employers should take to prevent bullying from occurring in the first place, and how to respond appropriately once aware of such behaviour.

Ensure anti-bullying and harassment policies are in place

To ensure a safe and inclusive environment, a decisive and strong approach must be taken. Employers should aim to have clear policies in place that outline what behaviour will constitute bullying and harassment, and what employees can do should they witness or experience such behaviour. The policy should be communicated to all employees and strictly enforced.

Conduct regular training and make sure managers lead by example

Leaders and managers have a significant impact on their team’s culture and behaviour and should lead by example by treating their staff with respect, listening to concerns and providing support where needed. Regular training to all employees, including those in managerial or supervisory roles, should be undertaken to recognise and prevent bullying and harassment. This training should cover the policy, reporting procedures and the consequences of violating anti-bullying policy.

Encourage a respectful workplace culture

One of the allegations against Raab is that he subjected Foreign Office workers to “abrasive, intimidating and undermining treatment.” Employers should encourage an open culture of respect, inclusivity and clear communication, in turn reducing the likelihood of bullying and harassment in the first place. This may be achieved through active efforts from employees, regular employee feedback, surveys, and team-building activities.

Investigate and respond to complaints

Employers should take all allegations of bullying and harassment seriously, confidentially, and impartially. This includes conducting a thorough investigation and taking appropriate disciplinary action if necessary. This has also been highlighted by the recent events with the CBI and the investigation carried out into significant concerns raised there.

One of the more controversial elements of Raab’s resignation is his comment that the inquiry into his behaviour was “setting the threshold for bullying so low… a dangerous precedent.” This perhaps demonstrates little remorse from the former Deputy PM and serves as an example of what to avoid when addressing complaints.

Employers should provide support to employees affected by bullying and harassment. This could include access to counselling services or making reasonable adjustments to working arrangements.

We’re here to help

We are assisting more and more clients with investigations, so if this is something that you require assistance with, and an independent and expert approach to investigations of such serious issues, do get in touch and we can support you with this.

By incorporating the above practices, employers can create a positive work environment free from bullying and harassment, ensuring that all employees are treated with respect and dignity. Raab’s resignation and the recent concerns troubling the CBI should serve as a reminder that workplace bullying and harassment are serious issues that can have hugely damaging consequences.

Employers should take proactive steps to prevent bullying and harassment from occurring, and if allegations are made, they should be handled promptly and fairly.

STARFROST AUTOMATED FREEZING SYSTEM BOOSTS BLOCK FREEZING CAPACITY BY 60% FOR NEWBURGH FOODS

Newburgh Foods, a UK-based provider of high-quality retail, foodservice and wholesale poultry products, has increased its poultry block freezing production capacity by 60% with the installation of an automated Starfrost Helix spiral freezer.

The company, which supplies major supermarkets and restaurants across England, had an existing contract with a fast food chain that recently increased its capacity requirements. This led Newburgh Foods to review its freezing process capabilities and seek a solution that would fulfil the substantial increase for its customer.

After a thorough evaluation of different freezing methods, Newburgh Foods awarded the contract to Starfrost, a leading manufacturer of mechanical freezing and chilling equipment. Starfrost supplied and custom-built a Helix spiral freezer that was designed to fit seamlessly within the existing production layout at Newburgh Food’s Warrington based factory.

Using natural refrigerant CO2, Starfrost’s equipment freezes up to 20 tonnes per day and has enabled Newburgh Foods to significantly increase its production capacity while delivering the additional benefit of increased efficiency for the firm by reducing freezing times to less than 85 minutes. This is a substantial improvement from the previously used blast freezing method, which took between 12 to 15 hours.

Newburgh Food’s Operations Manager, Phil Trew discussed the project: “We chose mechanical freezing over a nitrogen cryogenic alternative because it better suited our criteria and, of course, due to the soaring, unstable cost of gas. We needed to produce more product in less time if we were going to meet our new contract target and Starfrost worked with us to provide a freezing system that would perfectly suit our needs and the needs of our customer while being a cost effective solution.”

He further explained: “The spiral freezer has allowed us to significantly increase production capacity by 60% and substantially reduce freezing time. The quality of the engineered equipment and specification provided by Starfrost has impressed the team at Newburgh Foods.”

The installation of the automated Starfrost spiral freezer has allowed Newburgh Foods to meet the increased capacity requirements of its customer and maximise production efficiency. The success of this project showcases Starfrost’s ability to design and deliver customised solutions that meet the unique needs of their clients.
