CGA MARKET RECOVERY MONITOR – MAY 2021

CGA have shared with us their Market Recovery Monitor and Top 100 Towns report.

This month’s Market Recovery Monitor produced in conjunction with Alix Partners, gives a great insight into the first phase of reopening along with a look ahead at the scope for indoor hospitality.

Some key take-outs are:

  • Britain had 106,548 licensed premises at the end of April—8,560 or 7.4% fewer than it did in March 2020
  • Just under a third (32.9%) of all licensed premises traded during Britain’s first phase of post-lockdown reopening, with just over 35,000 sites welcoming guests since Monday 12 April
  • Across Britain, nearly half (49.0%) of all food pubs and more than a third of community pubs (38.7%) and high street pubs (36.0%) traded in the first phase of re-opening, compared to three in 10 (29.2%) casual dining restaurants and one in six (16.6%) other restaurants
  • In England, 29.6% of venues have traded since venues were permitted to open for outdoor-only service. The figure was slightly higher (31.1%) in Scotland, where operators had to wait until Monday 26 April, but were given the extra freedom to serve food indoors without alcohol until 8pm. Capacity was notably lower in Wales (24.6%)
  • MRM highlights some strong reopening rates in major city centres during this phase, including Leeds (41.7%), Newcastle (37.9%) and Manchester (37.3%), but lower numbers in London (29.1%). It suggests a good first phase of reopening for managed sites, with just over half (52.4%) of these trading—more than twice the number of independents (24.0%)

As the first report of 2021 our UK Top 100 Towns report covers the period from outdoor reopening on April 12th through to 8th May so the market performance represents only outdoor trading accounting for the decline across the board, however the range of performance does indicate that some towns have performed better than others. The weather may have been kinder, more might have reopened, but how does your performance compare to the towns you are in?

Now the market has reopened, the Top 100 Towns report will resume to its regular delivery schedule each month. Please note that in this and upcoming reports we will be calculating % change vs 2 years ago (i.e. corresponding period in 2019).

Shortage of HGV driver’s places business recovery at risk, according to Logistics UK report

Almost one in ten logistics businesses (9.8%) say the recruitment of drivers is an ‘extreme barrier’ to the recovery of their business, according to a report released (21 May 2021) by Logistics UK: The Logistics Report 2021. With the UK facing higher unemployment – predicted to be at least 5.5% this year – Logistics UK is urging the government to take immediate action to unlock access to these careers for new recruits to the sector, in order to support the recovery of UK PLC.

Alex Veitch, General Manager for Public Policy at Logistics UK comments: “Our report shows that 29% of logistics businesses anticipate that they will be unable to fill vacancies for HGV drivers this year; a further 14.5% expect long delays before filling a role. With the logistics industry in urgent need of these workers, Logistics UK is urging the government to provide interest free loans or grants to train or reskill potential employees and help recruit them into the logistics industry. The business group is also urging the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to maintain its fast-track programme to catch-up on at least 30,000 driving tests that were postponed due to COVID-19 between March and December 2020; this has left thousands of potential HGV drivers waiting in the wings when the UK needs them most to support every facet of UK PLC.”

Mr Veitch continues: “With almost one in ten (9.8%) of logistics businesses reporting that the recruitment of drivers is an ‘extreme barrier’ to the recovery of their business, the nationwide shortage of HGV drivers is stalling businesses’ recovery from the pandemic. With a large pool of potential candidates available – owing to the nation’s higher unemployment – we urge the government to make driver training affordable, accessible and attractive for all.”

The report also identified that staff shortages are expected across a range of operational roles in 2021, including fitter, mechanic and technician vacancies: 37% of respondents anticipate being unable to fill vacancies for these jobs this year.

The Logistics Report 2021 also shares insights into the UK’s competitiveness, international trade, connectivity, costs, sustainability, and safety and innovation. The report is available to download from the Logistics UK website here https://logistics.org.uk/logisticsreport

WEBINAR WEDNESDAY WITH JAMES SPICER OF KANTAR

Last week we were joined on our Wednesday Webinar by James Spicer of Kantar who gave us an update on the Retail Grocery Market and provided some insight into the performance of the Frozen Category.

He highlighted how challenging the Retail Market will find it to achieve year on year growth as we lap last year’s incredible performance.

The data also shows, as the Government eases the lockdown rules, consumers are increasing their shopping frequency in store which in turn is driving down the average basket size.

There are some regional variations with the East, London and Midlands above the UK average.

James also highlighted that many consumers are still to return to cafes/restaurants or pubs/bars.

Over the 52-week period to 18.04.21 Frozen had grown by just under £900m and had out-performed the Total Grocery Market in percentage value growth at 13.8% versus Grocery at 11.1%. Volume was up by 10.7% – some 2.9% above Total Grocery.

What was even more surprising, is the Frozen Category saw 1.3 bn trips up year on year by 2.7% whilst Total Grocery saw a decline of -12.4%.

This growth was supported by an increase in sales of freezers and with consumers visiting their freezers more often.

ICELAND EXTENDS FREE FROZEN VEG WITH HEALTHY START VOUCHERS TO COVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Iceland has extended its giveaway of frozen veg to customers using Healthy Start Vouchers in its stores across England, Wales and Northern Ireland until the end of August 2021. The free veg, worth £1 for every Healthy Start voucher used in store, will boost the value of the vouchers ensuring families have easy access to great value, nutritious food right up until the end of the Summer Holidays.

In Scotland, families will receive the same offer of free frozen veg each time they spend £4.25 or more on a Best Start Foods card.

Marcus Rashford MBE said: “Long-term change comes from collaboration and every single one of us stepping up to play a role, big or small. I’m proud of what the Taskforce has achieved in this space collectively and I’m thrilled to see Iceland continue such a vital commitment to the cause with the extension of the Healthy Start voucher top up.”

Frozen veg offers the nutritional value of fresh veg but also helps to reduce waste and lasts longer, helping families manage their budgets whilst ensuring they have healthy food to hand.

Iceland will report its findings and learnings back to the Food Foundation, which is working to support the implementation of the National Food Strategy recommendations. It will be feeding these learnings back to Government to inform the future design of the Scheme. Iceland hopes this will help to make a case for extending entitlement to the Voucher to more families.

Henry Dimbleby, Independent Lead of the National Food Strategy said: “It is fantastic to see Iceland extending its support for Healthy Start.  The evidence shows that supporting families with free fruit and veg can meaningfully improve the diets of children when money is tight at home.”

Richard Walker, Managing Director of Iceland Foods, said: “As a proud member of Marcus Rashford’s Child Food Poverty Taskforce, we are working with the Food Foundation and the Government to further support families by raising awareness of the Healthy Start and Best Start Foods schemes in our stores. We understand the continued pressing need to help from our interactions with millions of customers each week. At Iceland we have a long history of supporting our local communities and offering great quality, low cost food to help families across the country. We will continue to review our commitment to ensure we are able to support Marcus’ campaign to the fullest possible extent.”

Customers can choose from 25 varieties of frozen veg and can redeem the offer every time they use a Healthy Start Voucher or each time they spend at least £4.25 on a Best Start Foods card in store.

Iceland has a dedicated webpage supporting the scheme and is promoting the offer in store and online in a variety of ways. This includes a social media campaign supported by Marcus Rashford, newsletter updates to all Bonus Card customers and community level support via downloadable posters and leaflets for relevant groups. In store there will be dedicated point of sale information on the frozen vegetable cabinets to signpost to the free £1 veg initiative as well as door stickers, digital window posters and word of mouth promotion from in-store colleagues.

UNICARRIERS DELIVERS STATE-OF-THE-ART E-COMMERCE STORAGE CONCEPT FOR LOGISTICS PROVIDER DELAMODE

An enormous boom in e-commerce over the past few years has led to the need for a new warehouse concept for Delamode PLC’s UK warehouse: The freight and logistics management provider’s double-deep storage system had become inefficient, and the ongoing short-term hire of industrial trucks was no longer up to date. Delamode began looking for a suitable provider to restructure its warehouse in Braintree, Essex. Longstanding partner UniCarriers offered a VNA warehouse solution with matching material handling equipment. The global manufacturer of industrial trucks delivered not only a seamless logistics concept but also excellent service quality and a great understanding of Delamode’s needs. Altogether, Delamode benefits from a modern system with a high storage capacity, which is no longer at the expense of immediate selectivity. On top of that, the equipment provided is state-of-the-art and on point when it comes to safety.

Delamode is one of the largest companies of the International freight and logistics management group Xpediator PLC, which is listed on the London AIM Stock Exchange. The Xpediator group specialises in international freight transportation, warehousing and logistics services, ecommerce management solutions and specialist transport support services offered by its Affinity Transport Solutions business unit. The Delamode branch in Braintree, Essex, is a pick-and-pack warehouse covering almost 170,000 square feet with around 150 full-time employees. The focus is on distributing goods for retail and wholesale, fashion and especially e-commerce – a sector that in recent years increased and developed enormously for Delamode. After years of relying on double-deep storage in Braintree, the system’s limitations were no longer acceptable for Delamode. A high storage capacity due to double-deep storage is always at the expense of selectivity. A total of three pallet movements were necessary to reach a pallet in a back location: front pallet out, targeted pallet out, front pallet back in. This is a time-consuming process that potentially results in the damage of valuable stock. Nevertheless, the double-deep system worked for years, as many of the pallets had duplicates which is why they were directly accessible at other storage locations. However, with a growing demand in e-commerce and rising throughput in the warehouse, the number of duplicate pallets decreased over time. Employees had to access the back pallets more often than before with increasing effort. Thus, the double-deep storage system had become unsuitable for Delamode.

The Braintree site encountered further difficulties: With free moving trucks in use, Delamode reported a lot of facility damage causing issues in the racking. Also, the company had relied on short-term hire equipment from UniCarriers and other suppliers for years. As a result, this provided a high degree of flexibility, however, with regard to cost effectiveness, Delamode was looking for a coherent overall concept focussing on the long-term use of material handling equipment.

“UniCarriers provided a complete solution”

Delamode started to hold talks with three suppliers of industrial trucks. UniCarriers were in pole position according to Lauren Collins, Site Manager, Delamode. This is because the long-standing partner had already distinguished itself in the past with a high quality of service. In the event of potential vehicle breakdowns, UniCarriers can react quickly and reliably thanks to the modular vehicle design. The service team responds to questions and difficulties, and the right people are immediately available: “UniCarriers’ response time and communication was top-draw in comparison to other suppliers, who struggled to understand the difficulties we had with their equipment,” says Lauren Collins, Site Manager, Delamode. “UniCarriers, however, did not just offer one standard kit of material handling equipment, but perfectly understood what our specific needs were.” John Clements, Regional Sales Manager at UniCarriers UK, describes the procedure: “We provided Delamode with several solutions to retain their capacity but to give them back immediate selectivity. We talked them through the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.” The decision was made in favour of a VNA storage system completed with the appropriate material handling equipment. UniCarriers convinced Delamode with its consultative approach and flexible working methods: They brought additional partners on board – for example the racking provider System Store Solutions – and took charge of the coordination between all parties. As a result, Delamode received an overall package without having to negotiate between many different contractors. “UniCarriers came prepared to offer more than just the trucks – they provided a complete solution. This made the process a lot easier and therefore convinced Delamode to work with UniCarriers,” Lauren Collins summarises. Another advantage for Delamode became apparent when the project was already underway: At short notice, Delamode had to adjust their order of equipment – to which UniCarriers reacted without any complications.

New very narrow aisle warehouse with matching forklift fleet

For all warehouse tasks – from unloading incoming vehicles to pallet put away and pallet replenishment – Delamode in Braintree now uses a variety of UniCarriers trucks. The keystone of the fleet is the IFOY award-winning TERGO® URS, a versatile very narrow aisle reach truck. Thanks to its swivel fork design, it can work in aisles as small as 1800 mm.  In-aisle steering is automated via a signal wire, and magnets indicate the proximity to the end of aisle bringing the truck to a controlled stop. As a result, this truck can operate safely at high speed without the risk of striking the racking.  The URS also offers diagonal movement of pallets, thus providing simultaneous travel and lift functions, significantly reducing cycle times and improving productivity.  This machine is the workhorse of the operation complimenting the VNA layout and offering both space and handling efficiency. The remainder of the fleet consists of powered pallet trucks with fixed platform that offer more comfort and safety than conventional pedestrian stackers in confined environments and wire-guided EPH high-level order pickers, twice nominated for the prestigious International Forklift Truck of the Year (IFOY) competition.

The new fleet by UniCarriers perfectly matches Delamode’s warehouse requirements and provides them with the highest degree of flexibility. But that is not the only advantage: “The trucks are spot on in view of safety. UniCarriers has equipped them with a lot of valuable features, which provide a safer environment for us to work in,” says Lauren Collins enthusiastically. The issues with free moving trucks damaging the facility is now resolved by guided vehicles with defined movement. Special framework protects the batteries and charging systems of the electrically powered trucks from damage. A light system brings additional safety for the warehouse employees: A blue spot LED light projects onto the floor in front of the moving forklift truck visually warning them of the approaching vehicle.

The inadequate storage system and the unnecessarily high effort in Braintree are now a thing of the past. Instead, Delamode benefits from a modern logistics concept. Thanks to adopting a long-term equipment strategy and an efficient material handling operation in the new very narrow aisle warehouse, the logistics provider is saving costs day after day. The fleet of forklift trucks, the racking, the storage safety, and the related installations are all cast from a single mould under the leadership of Delamode’s partner UniCarriers – well rounded off by a high quality of service.
