We are also delighted to welcome onto the Board Jose Neto of Cargill, who kindly agreed to be co-opted earlier in the year but has now become a full board member. Jose has already played an active role on the board and will bring a wealth of International experience. We also have a further two new board members, Steve Challouma General Manager of Nomad UK and Richard Pike Technical and Sustainability Director of Cook.

During the last 12 months Nick Redford stepped down from the board when he left Caterforce in January, and at the AGM last week Nigel Broadhurst and Wayne Hudson also left the board. I would like to extend my thanks to Nick, Nigel and Wayne for their support to myself and the Federation over many years, their input has been greatly appreciated.

‘‘2021 is likely to be a tough year for our industry, and I am excited to be able to support and help our members navigate what promises to be a rocky path ahead.

Let’s not forget what a fantastic industry, frozen food actually is….  It is a dynamic, innovative sector that I am certain will continue to develop both its profile and importance within the retail and out of home settings’’

Steve Challouma

Steve Challouma is the General Manager of Birds Eye UK, the leading branded business in UK Frozen Foods, encompassing the Birds Eye, Aunt Bessie’s and Goodfella’s brands. Richard Pike

I have been lucky enough to spend most of my working career of over 30 years working within the food industry. I have enjoyed wide-ranging product experience and have also had the opportunity to work within family businesses, multinational manufacturers and retailers and for the last 13 years of my career I have been working as the Technical and Sustainability Director for COOK.

Whilst I have been at COOK the business has grown from £15 to +£80 Million annual turnover, with a large element of this growth coming from our retail channel, which has seen our shop estate grow from 20 to 90 shops. In addition to our financial growth, our core purpose for why and how we run the business has gone from strength to strength and we became a founding member of the UK bcorp community.

I have led our efforts on improving our ingredient provenance through improving animal welfare and developing relationships with local growers along with driving change in our environmental performance, recently setting science based targets and our goal to be net zero by 2030.

I’m really pleased to be joining the board of the BFFF at a time when the benefits of frozen food are really coming to the fore and look forward to helping to support our industry wherever I can.

NEW BFFF PRESIDENT CALLS FOR FURTHER SUPPORT OF OUT OF HOME SECTOR

Ian Stone, the newly elected president and chair of the British Frozen Food Federation has used his maiden speech to call for renewed government support for members supplying foodservice and hospitality.

Speaking via video link to the Federation’s annual general meeting on Thursday (26 Nov) Mr Stone who is chief commercial officer and managing director of Wiltshire Farm Foods, part of the apetito group, said that many members may go out of business before recovery from the pandemic starts next year.

He commented: “I am particularly aware how challenging it must be for our members with exposure to the out of home market as they continue to bear the brunt of restrictions imposed by the Government.

“Unfortunately, the latest tier changes announced this week will not bring the hope that the out of home market has been looking for. The market is opening in name only and there is now a real danger that restrictions will result in swathes of pubs, restaurants and clubs – supplied by wholesalers and food manufacturers – going out of business before the eagerly anticipated vaccines arrive.”

He added: “We saw a positive impact from the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ campaign in August, only for the position to go into sharp reverse in only a few weeks. Many of our members have had minimal support from the Government and the Federation will continue to highlight these issues to all appropriate stakeholder contacts. We simply must see further support for the out of home sector.”

Mr Stone, who was elected at the AGM, takes over from previous BFFF president and chairman Nigel Broadhurst, who was until July, also joint managing director of Iceland Foods.

He praised Mr Broadhurst’s contribution, saying that the Federation would not be as strong today without his unstinting and unqualified support.

The new president also highlighted growing awareness of frozen food’s role in helping reduce food waste, saying that it is becoming ever more evident that food waste has a massive impact on the environment. From the depletion of natural resources in making food that is then thrown away, to the emissions created by the food waste itself. Reducing food waste will be key if the UK is to meet current net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

He also praised the industry saying: “Let us not forget what a fantastic, industry frozen food is. It is a dynamic, innovative sector that has confounded its critics over many, many years. Look at what Cook has done for frozen food retailing and how Bird’s Eye has revitalised the frozen food offer. And just recently we have seen Poundland acquire Fulton’s Foods frozen food as a key part of its transformation programme.”

The BFFF AGM normally takes place at London’s Hilton Park Lane hotel, ahead of the Federation’s annual luncheon which is attended by over 800 business leaders for the food industry. This year’s AGM was held via video link as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions.

Mr Stone concluded by saying: “Thank you for listening and next year I do sincerely hope to be giving my second speech as president and chair from a stage in the London Hilton on Park Lane.”

TCS&D VIRTUAL AWARDS 2020: UNICARRIERS HONOURED AS MATERIALS HANDLING EQUIPMENT PROVIDER OF THE YEAR

After winning the award in 2017 and 2018, UniCarriers makes a comeback as the Materials Handling Equipment Provider of the Year at the Temperature Controlled Storage & Distribution (TCS&D) Awards 2020. Offering a variety of products and solutions for the cold store and chilled sectors, the industrial truck manufacturer won over the jury with their efficiency-oriented services. The TCS&D Awards honour corporations and individuals in the temperature-controlled storage and distribution industry every year. In 2019, UniCarriers won another TCS&D award in the Customer Service category, for their outstanding service support to their customers.

UniCarriers’ first and foremost goal is to improve their customers’ operational efficiency. In particular, their in-house finance company UniCarriers Leasing UK and their flexible forklift hire who offer an optimal solution to each customer’s specific logistics requirements. Customers who decide to lease the equipment benefit from tailor-made and amendable contracts and packages to match their needs. Furthermore, since UniCarriers is the single point of supply including maintenance, equipment, finance and service, customers only need one contract. However, many customers also rely on the Short Term Hire solution that provides them with a full range of bespoke trucks and equipment to adapt their fleet size and the guarantee of full maintenance cover throughout the hire period. Being an original equipment manufacturer, UniCarriers uses their knowledge and expertise to ensure the best possible service at all times.

With their field service engineers and Short Term Hire team in Thame, and their customizable contracts, UniCarriers guarantees a personalised solution for every customer to help them maintain their efficiency, even during the ongoing pandemic. This not only ensures a trouble-free coordination of the supply chain but also maintains the availability of food, pharmaceuticals and other products that rely on cold storage.

Due to the current crisis and the restrictions that come with it the award ceremony was held virtually as the “TCS&D Virtual Awards” on LinkedIn and Twitter on November 18th.

YORKSHIRE FMCG BRAND WINS SME BRAND OF THE YEAR IN FOOD AND DRINK ‘OSCARS’ – THE GROCER GOLD AWARDS

In one of the biggest award ceremonies in the food industry, Yorkshire-based The Ice Co has won SME Brand of the Year.

The Grocer Gold Awards are held annually by the industry leading publication ‘The Grocer’, and mark the achievements of companies and businesses in the food industry. Previous winners have included Fever Tree, Lily’s Kitchen, Child’s Farm and Bulldog.

This year’s event was held on Friday, 13 November, and due to the coronavirus pandemic was held virtually, with the ceremony filmed for people to watch.

The Ice Co, Europe’s leading ice manufacturer, was commended for its ‘brilliant’ and ‘incredibly smart’ strategy that capitalised on wider trends.

Like many other food and drink categories, ice is undergoing a premiumisation movement – led by people who want quality, premium drinks with equally superior accompaniments.

The Ice Co spotted this trend and added two new lines to its ice portfolio, including Super Cubes and Premium Ice. Super Cubes really impressed judges because of their superior quality, size and premium feel.

The Ice Co’s Premium Ice Cubes were also singled out as being for the more discerning ice consumer, while also addressing a space issue for supermarkets.

One judge said “How clever to take a commodity like ice and market it alongside one of the biggest trends in FMCG – gin.”

The judges also noted The Ice Co’s ‘highly creative’ marketing strategy that saw the ice brand partner with top gin mixologists to craft cocktails, distributing 10,000 copies of its book The Little Book of Gin and adding 13,000 inserts to 13,000 ‘Think Gin’ subscription boxes.

Super Cubes have grown 14.1% in the last year. Ginny Woolhouse, Head of Marketing at The Ice Co, said:“We are over the moon to have won SME Brand of the Year at The Grocer Gold Awards, and it’s testament to our passion for creating exciting ice products that our customers want and love.

“There has been a real step change in the way consumers are enjoying drinks, with many now opting for higher quality tipples like craft cocktails and classics like G&T. By innovating our product range alongside this changing drinks landscape, we’ve been able to keep our ice products relevant and ahead of the game

“We’re really proud of all of our ice products, but Super Cubes have definitely been the biggest winner of the year. Customers love that they’re three times larger than the average ice cube, they melt slowly, cool quickly and look fantastic served with a G&T in a Copa de Balon glass.”

Polly Metcalfe, Managing Director at The Ice Co, said, “Winning SME brand of the year is one of The Ice Co’s greatest achievements. Our strategy has been educating everyone and anyone that ice is not just frozen water – it is so much more.

“Ice is at the core of the occasion and I believe our products reflect that feeling. We aim to see our products at every occasion in every household, garden or venue, and this recognition with winning this award is one step closer to that goal.

“Winning Grocer Gold SME brand of the year has certainly made our year… and we all know what a year it has been! To be even nominated against these well known and loved brands was fantastic enough, but then we won!

“It is for achievements such as these which make all the hard work worth it. It wouldn’t have been achieved without our fantastic team of ice heroes! Congratulations to you all and thank you for being a part of our journey…”

BRAKES WINS NATIONAL WHOLESALER OF THE YEAR AT THE GROCER GOLD AWARDS

Brakes, the leading UK foodservice wholesaler, has been named National Wholesaler of the Year at the 2020 Grocer Gold Awards. The award, presented at a virtual ceremony on Friday (13 November), adds to the widespread industry recognition for food and service Brakes has achieved this year, including being named Foodservice Operator of the Year for the second year running, at the Quality Food and Drink Awards.

The Grocer award takes a holistic look at a wholesaler’s business and it was awarded to Brakes as a result of the company’s all-round performance across its core focus areas of food, service and expertise.

It recognised Brakes’ ‘customer first’ strategy, which puts the customer at the heart of how it runs its business.  This was based on a significant investment of around £300m by 2025 in infrastructure to enhance customer service and a renewed focus on food, particularly developing the business’ fresh offer.  This strategy has seen customer satisfaction levels grow significantly, contributing to Brakes winning more than 40 awards for its food and its service in 2020 alone.

In addition, Brakes identified a number of areas where customers needed additional support.  Key among these was CSR, where Brakes embarked on a market-leading campaign, which included removing hard-to-recycle black plastics, becoming the first wholesaler to sign up to the Plastics Pact and minimising waste, particularly food waste.

The company also launched an internal wellbeing programme, which encompassed mental, physical and financial health.  The company has been widely praised for leading the way with its Mental Health programme, which it has extended through the COVID-19 pandemic to support colleagues.  These activities helped the company deliver record colleague engagement scores across the business.

Hugo Mahoney, Brakes CEO, said: “Throughout a challenging year, Brakes colleagues have gone to extraordinary lengths to support one another, our customers and the community. Winning this award is testament to the huge steps forward we have made in the last couple of years. We have focused on innovation and invested in technology to help us service our customers more easily and efficiently, while never losing sight of our passion for food. Being recognised with this award is a tribute to the dedication and team spirit of Brakes colleagues across the country.”
