Gen Z’s FOMO is driving Food Waste

A survey, run by the European institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), has highlighted that the spontaneous and varied food choices made by ‘Generation Z’ are contributing to food waste.

The food-funded project, ‘Cook Clever’, by EIT interviewed 18-25-year olds about their food habits. The survey identified that many of them experience fear of missing out (FOMO), impulsive food cravings and a feeling that they need to be trying new meals on a regular basis. The results also indicated that they weren’t keen on eating leftovers or having a strict meal plan.

“We’ve known for some time that household food waste needs to be reduced, in recent years we’ve seen growing number of initiatives such as community fridges and food sharing apps to try and tackle the issue which is a good first step, however these initiatives are not taking into account different age groups and their specific challenges when it comes to food,” said Dr Natalie Masento, an applied psychologist and lead researcher on the project from the University of Reading.

Findings from the survey suggest that lifestyle has a big impact on their cooking and routines, such as those at University sharing a kitchen, not having access to a car and having a demanding schedule makes it all the more difficult to plan and shop for meals and as a result they rely more on takeaways or impulsive dinner purchases.

“With Gen Z being framed as the sustainability generation we might have expected to see a greater level of engagement with in-home activism, such as trying to reduce food waste,” said Dr Lilly Da Gama, a food waste specialist and researcher on the project. “We can see from the discussions that there is some level of consciousness towards minimising food waste, however these results suggest that a host of personal desires, preferences and day-to-day issues are preventing a greater level of engagement with the issue.”

Dr Masento feels that the previous campaigns encouraging food planning and using up leftovers, have not had the best approach for Generation Z and therefore researchers are looking at new ways of targeting this age group and hoping to find new ways to tackle the issue.

THE BRITISH FROZEN FOOD AWARDS RETAIL JUDGING PROCESS

Last week the British Frozen Food Federation began releasing information on the judging process for the Foodservice products in the British Frozen Food Awards, this week the judging process for the retail judging process are released.

A COVID Compliant Retail Judging Panel

The retail judging process usually takes the BFFF team 7 months to complete using 18 retail panels. All panellists look at the following elements of each product entry in the British Frozen Food Awards:

  • Initial Impact
  • Texture
  • Flavour
  • Product Appeal
  • Product Packaging

The BFFF team were half way through the judging process when the first lockdown was implemented. The BFFF Health and Safety team worked with the awards team to create a COVID safe strategy to complete the judging process sufficiently. Take a look at the below video of the retail judging panel and how the BFFF managed to fully complete the judging process with COVID.

The judges are also required to provide comments for every product entry, so companies can evaluate feedback once the awards night is over.

More information about the British Frozen Food Awards night will be announced shortly.

ANNUAL REVIEW OF FROZEN FOODS – LAUNCHING JANUARY 2021

The BFFF is creating an annual review of the Frozen Food Industry to release in January 2021. The review will focus on the industry as a whole in the last 12 months, including the successes, innovation, challenges, and concerns.

The report is going to be broken down into five main chapters: Retail Industry, Foodservice Industry, Consumer Behaviour, Food Waste, and Sustainability. Within the Retail and Foodservice industry chapters, the report will feature market data from Kantar and CGA, a review of how our members have been impacted by Covid-19, NPD and innovation, combined with trends for the future.

The chapter on Consumer Behaviour will look at consumers’ shopping habits and perceptions on frozen food, freezer ownership and the challenges the industry is facing with the obesity crisis.

Food Waste is a very important topic at the moment and something we can all get involved with. We have been working with WRAP to provide content for this chapter, with further contributions from BFFF members Company Shop and Fareshare highlighting the importance of repurposing food.

Finally, the chapter on Sustainability will focus on packaging reduction, concerns about plastic tax and innovating for the future.

The BFFF would like to take the opportunity to thank the BFFF Young Leaders Forum (YLF) for their help with the report. Holly Jones, Technical Assistant, and Harry Hinks, Digital Membership and Marketing Manager for the BFFF, lead the YLF and pitched the idea of the report to the group in August. The group has since worked together designing the structure of the review and providing important content. Thank you as well to all the other BFFF members for their valued contributions.

We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Newcold who have agreed to Sponsor this comprehensive review of our industry.

Fire Safety Bill Progress 2019-2021

The Fire Safety Bill amends the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and is expected to result in greater clarity over responsibility for fire safety in buildings containing more than one home. Remaining stages of the Bill were scheduled to take place in the Commons on 7 September 2020.
Following the Grenfell Fire in 2017 the Government have taken a number of steps around fire safety, and this Bill forms part of that response. It is part of a series of changes by the Government to both fire safety and building safety more generally, with further primary and secondary legislation to follow.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 consolidated a number of different pieces of fire legislation. It applies to all non-domestic premises, including communal areas of residential buildings with multiple homes. The Order designates those in control of premises as the responsible person for fire safety and they have a duty to undertake assessments and manage risks. The Order is enforced by Fire and Rescue Authorities.
The Bill clarifies that for any building containing two or more sets of domestic premises the Order applies to the building’s structure and external walls and any common parts, including the front doors of residential parts. It also clarifies that external walls in the order include “doors or windows in those walls” and “anything attached to the exterior of those walls (including balconies).” These amendments are expected to provide for increased enforcement action in these areas, particularly where remediation of aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding is not taking place.
This Bill extends and applies to England and Wales. Separate fire safety legislation is in place in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Fire Safety is devolved in Wales but the Bill amends the shared legislation, with the same delegated powers applying to English and Welsh Ministers.
The Bill also provides English and Welsh Ministers with a regulation making power to amend the type of buildings the order applies to in the future.
The Bill has been welcomed, with public and industry bodies noting the expected increase in enforcement action by Fire and Rescue Authorities as a result of the Bill’s clarifications, as well as an expectation that it will impose greater burdens on the responsible person in multi-occupancy residential buildings.
Second Reading of the Bill took place on 29 April 2020. Committee Stage took place on Thursday 25 June where the Bill passed without amendment. Three new clauses were negatived on division. Remaining stages of the Bill were scheduled for Monday 7 September 2020.
Further changes to fire safety law are expected to follow shortly.

Preventing falls from mobile refrigeration

Over the last few years BFFF have been working tirelessly with the industry for finding a system for preventing falls when working on mobile refrigeration units this to protect employees of refrigeration contractors which provide a crucial service for the industry.
In the event of mobile refrigeration breakdown, you can imagine a situation where both time and financial pressure are apparent and where frozen produce is potentially at risk. It is therefore paramount that refrigeration engineers are using safe and suitable work equipment to access and egress over cab refrigeration.
When completing risk assessment there is a hierarchy of control measures to follow, which would start by looking at avoiding work at height in the first place. Many of our members have now opted for underslung refrigeration fitted on their vehicles rather than the over cab type, this does avoid the need to work at height outside the vehicle and therefore eliminates falls.
In some cases, it will not be possible to avoid working at height and the next stage risk assessment is considered and is fall prevention. With fall prevention this means adopting physical barriers such as handrails and this was the area BFFF spend considerable time in finding a solution.
Through much research and development and closely working with our membership, a specialist engineering company, refrigeration contractors and the wider industry we finally achieved this goal.

This fall prevention product was showcased at our working at height seminar. The product utilises a counterbalanced chassis which is used to mount a winch operated ladder and fully protected cantilever work area and handrail system. The handrail system sits over on the cab roof. Access and egress are gained through a spring-loaded safety gate onto the existing vehicle cab roof catwalk which is used as a working platform. The unit then provides full handrail protection while the work is being carried out.
The product was developed by Ajax which are part of Canal Engineering and have supplied to the BFFF membership.

Ajax have developed an extensive range of products to support safer working environments. Our pallet gates, platforms and step units have a proven track record for being easy to operate, and the superior quality of our products ensures a long working life cycle.

COVID-19 update: Periodic tachograph calibrations and new requirements for entering France

Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency October 2020
Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we’ve decided to suspend periodic tachograph calibrations and inspections on vehicles.
All lorries, buses, coaches and trailers with a periodic test of their tachograph (calibration or inspection) due to expire will now be given a 3-month extension.
New certificates will not be issued.
To ensure all tachograph vehicles remain legal whilst the country deals with the coronavirus outbreak, DVSA will be bringing in a relaxation from the legislation.
What this means for your vehicle
If your tachograph calibration or inspection is due in the next 3 months, an extension will be issued automatically.
You do not need to take any extra action.
You’ll still need to keep tachographs operating effectively.
If your tachograph develops a fault, this must be repaired in line with the normal requirements.
New requirements when travelling to France
In order to curb non-essential travel, all those driving to France, including freight operators, must from now on complete an International Attestation form to confirm that their journey meets the criteria for ‘essential travel’.
This is a new requirement introduced by the French authorities in response to the coronavirus outbreak. More information can be found on GOV.UK
