HEROIC ICELAND DELIVERY DRIVER IN BIRTHDAY HONOURS LIST

An Iceland supermarket delivery driver who went above and beyond the call of duty during the Covid-19 lockdown, ensuring vulnerable shoppers in his local community received vital supplies, has been awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal), by Her Majesty the Queen in this year’s Birthday Honours List.

Adam, 44 years old, who works as a delivery driver at Iceland’s Rustington store in West Sussex, was surprised and delighted to receive the honour, stating: “I started with Iceland last year in June after moving into the area from Watford. I was very shocked to be nominated and absolutely amazed to hear from the Cabinet Office to tell me that I was to receive the award. My family are very proud with what I have achieved, and when I told my father he was beaming with pride, even more so because he received a similar award over 25 years ago. I am so pleased that I was able to serve my community and give help to people when they had no one else to turn to.”

Identifying that some customers were without a support network, Adam also left customers with his personal mobile and home phone numbers alongside their delivery of shopping, providing vulnerable members of his community with a listening ear in times of need.

Countless letters of gratitude from households across Adam’s local community have already recognised his commitment to his local community. Received by his store, many expressed their thanks for both the practical help and the overwhelming display of compassion that Adam had shown them. Many stated they did not know how they would have coped without his help at the peak of the crisis.

The impact of Adam’s actions has have been huge. Not only to those he serves in his immediate community, but in the wider business and the way we have responded to the crisis in other stores.

Adam’s heroic actions have created a butterfly effect within the wider Iceland business, as staff up and down the nation have protected the most vulnerable in our communities at a time of crisis, and in this generation-defining situation he has proved the true impact that everyday acts of kindness can have on our society.

Supporting Iceland’s recruitment drive to Feed the Nation at the height of demand, Adam also took it upon himself to link up with other Iceland stores, coaching six new Home Delivery Drivers to give the best possible service to the community, and in particular the most vulnerable.

Adam’s Area Sales Manager Mike Jones said: “Everyone at the store feels very lucky to work with Adam and are all so delighted to have such a fantastic colleague, who goes above and beyond on each and every shift.

He is an asset to Iceland and to the community, and lives by a motto ‘never limit your challenges, always challenge your limits’.

“Adam is a shining example of what it means to be a good citizen and we couldn’t be any prouder!”

OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL TO INCREASE DUBLIN CAPACITY READY FOR JANUARY 2021

In readiness for change and the many challenges of Brexit, total supply chain solutions specialist Oakland International is set to increase capacity at its Dublin facility by over 60% as of January 2021.

After launching in Ireland in 2009 and establishing a strong presence via their joint collaboration with Mark Caffrey, Oakland took the strategic decision in 2018 to expand and move to the ideal location of Food Central, which is adjacent to Dublin airport, has excellent motorway links, and is less than 10 minutes from the Dublin port tunnel, placing Oakland Ireland in the right place at the right time.

Oakland International Director Richard Hill commented: “Having moved from a 9,000sq.ft warehouse to a 30,000sq.ft. purpose built facility in 2018 we are delighted to be expanding again in the New Year when we will be in a 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse, servicing all major Irish retailers.

“We’ll also be responsible for the building of a total of 80,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Food Central, all thanks to the hard work of our team and their desire to provide a premium service to support suppliers and Irish retailers.”

Looking ahead, Oakland is prepared for this next busy trading period, which will be challenging both regarding Brexit and the pandemic. In addition they are on target to add to this with a further 30,000 sq. ft. extension in their collaborative partnership with Agro Merchants, as Oakland prepares for significant expansion of their chilled and frozen supply chain consolidation operations for the whole of Ireland over the coming year, with contract packing and direct-to-consumer (D2C) solutions alone expecting significant growth in the first six-months of 2021.

Added Richard: “We’ve learnt from 2020 that retail will be strong particularly if food service is curtailed by Covid, with our plan to continue to invest in our people and our growth strategy, whilst strengthening  and building on our successes.

“Consolidating customer product into all major retailers, we’re able to help and support those who wish to act for themselves, with Oakland ideally located both close to retailers and to the port for imported goods. 2021 provides challenge, but also great opportunity.”

Oakland International is a B2C/B2B specialist in contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution and brand development support provider for ambient, chilled and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain. They are also BRC AA accredited, a double Queen’s Award for Enterprise recipient for International Trade and Sustainable Development and they are working towards becoming the first carbon-neutral business within its sector.

BOARD VACANCIES

The strength of the BFFF comes in part from having a Board that has wide-ranging experience and knowledge. This helps shape the direction we take and provides good governance on behalf of the membership.

We now have two positions that will open on the Board as Nigel Broadhurst steps down from the Board after many years of active support and involvement in the BFFF. We are also sad to see Wayne Hudson step down as his role changes within Nomad.

We, therefore, have two Board positions that are open for a Retailer and a major Manufacturer.

If you would like to be considered for either position then please contact Emma Cranidge who will be able to explain the application process. Alternatively, you can contact Richard Harrow directly and he will be happy to answer any questions.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

In a normal year, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held on the day of the Annual Luncheon.

With the Luncheon unfortunately cancelled because of the pandemic we have decided to hold the AGM on-line via a Zoom meeting.

Therefore, please put a note in your diary for Thursday, 26th November 2020 at 11.30am, when you will have the opportunity to join the AGM, to hear from myself on the work undertaken by the Federation on behalf of our members.

We will be asking members to pre-register for the event so that we can send out the link to the meeting.

I will be joined on the meeting by the Board, with Ian Stone of Wiltshire Farm Foods who assumes the Chairmanship of the BFFF, as Nigel Broadhurst steps down from the Board after many years actively supporting the Federation.

Please note that any member of BFFF is entitled to attend the AGM and we welcome all members, but as non-voting members, our Associate members do not have the right to vote on any matter at the meeting.

Members can register to attend here: https://bfff.co.uk/event/the-bfff-annual-general-meeting/

BFFF EVENTS & MARKETING PLAN 2021

As I am sure many members will be aware Covid-19 has had a massive impact on the event calendar for the BFFF.

To date we have lost three events including our two flagship events of the Gala Dinner Dance and Product Awards Evening and the Annual Luncheon.

It is clear that it is not just the Federation that has been impacted by the pandemic. We are fully aware that many of our members have seen their businesses, and in many cases their livelihoods, decimated by Covid-19.

However, we are now trying to plan ahead into 2021 which we hope will be an environment that will allow physical meetings once again.

As I am sure you can understand it is difficult to plan with a hundred percent confidence, but I feel we need to at least provide members with a plan for the next calendar year, as follows:

EVENT WHEN LOCATION
Health & Safety and Technical Conference Feb/Mar On-line
Business Conference / Product Awards Evening April 21st Chesford Grange
Gala Dinner Dance and People Awards June TBC
Annual Luncheon Nov Hilton on Park Lane

Those of you that are BFFF stalwarts will notice some changes to the traditional BFFF programme.

The Business Conference has been pushed back into April in the hope that we can run as a physical event. We will also combine this with the ‘much delayed’ Product Awards for this year. We know many organisations have run product awards on-line, but we felt it was important to try to make this a physical event so that we can truly celebrate the amazing innovation in our industry.

This will mean that we will not run another Product Awards in 2021 but will bring the Product Awards back in 2022 and will capture products from 2021 and 2022.

New to our events calendar will be a media event hosted in May.  The aim of the event will be to present the short-listed products from the Product Awards 2020 to an invited audience of journalists, bloggers and influencers. This, whilst not open to members, will be a great opportunity to present the amazing products launched on to the market.

We are planning to run our annual Gala Dinner Dance in June, but this will no longer be at the Hilton on Park Lane. We are conscious that over the course of the last few years the venue has become very expensive and does not fit with today’s environment – especially so since Covid-19. However, we still feel it is important that the industry comes together to celebrate. We are planning that this will also be a celebration of some of the people in our industry. We are seeking a venue for this event and will announce this in due course.

We will finish the year off with the return of the Annual Luncheon which will remain at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

We also have one other project we are working on which will launch in January 2021 – this will be Frozen Food Annual Review for 2020. This will be a comprehensive review of the category covering sales, Covid-19 impact, waste, sustainability, consumer views on frozen and much more.

We hope you will agree this is an ambitious plan for the next calendar year.  We also wish to assure you that, given the uncertain future, we are taking all reasonable steps not only to ensure that we deliver this programme, but to be able to revert seamlessly to alternative means of delivery should that become necessary.

Due to COVID-19, businesses are experiencing the biggest changes in operations since World War II. It’s time to think differently about standard processes and procedures. ”
