TRADE BODY PUBLISHES AD AND BIOGAS INDUSTRY CLIMATE COMMITMENT TO SUPPORTING THE UK’S EFFORTS IN ACHIEVING NET ZERO

  • Initiated by the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), the UK AD and Biogas Industry Climate Declaration commits the sector to making the greatest possible contribution towards achieving the UK’s Net Zero targets.
  • With the right policy support and fully deployed, the UK anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry could reduce the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by 6% by 2030.
  • The Declaration lists key asks from the British Government to unlock the full potential of the UK AD and biogas sector, which will also create tens of thousands of jobs.
  • It was sent to Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday, 24th June.
  • The launch coincides with the Climate Change Committee’s release of its Progress Report to Parliament 2021, which highlights a huge gap between Government ambition and policy reality.  AD alone can make up 30% of the 5th Carbon Budget shortfall.

Yesterday, 24th June, ADBA submitted to the Prime Minister the UK Anaerobic Digestion (AD) and Biogas Industry Climate Declaration, whereby the industry commits to doing everything in its powers to deliver the greatest possible carbon reductions for the UK and thus support the country in achieving its Net Zero ambitions.

With this Declaration, the UK AD and biogas industry wants to send a clear message to the Prime Minister that it is ready to help the UK Government decarbonise the nation’s economy and meet its climate change targets, but that this will only be possible if his Cabinet creates a supportive policy environment and regulatory framework now.

In its 2019 report, Biomethane: the Pathway to 2030, ADBA established that the AD industry could cut annual UK emissions by 6% by 2030. However, to do so, it needs a coherent and supportive policy strategy across the various departments involved (BEIS, Defra, DfT, Treasury). The Declaration therefore defines what is required from government to unlock the industry’s full potential – fully deployed, the industry would also create 60,000 new jobs.

ADBA and the 48 signatories are calling for the British Government and authorities in cities, regions and nations of the UK to:

  • Create an AD and green gas policy framework as soon as possible that brings together government departments’ work streams into a cohesive support strategy.
  • Support AD in agriculture, through the introduction of a tariff premium for the treatment of manures and slurries through AD and a renewable biofertiliser obligation.
  • Support the use of biomethane in transport, through its recognition as a leading low-carbon fuel to decarbonise HGV operations, and better incentives to promote investment in the development of new biomethane plants for transport and refuelling infrastructure.
  • Support small businesses and community projects in developing a circular economy, using AD to transform local waste into local heat and power.
  • Establish material hierarchies for all organic wastes with AD as the optimal recycling technology.
  • Target innovation funding to support key aspects of the industry that would deliver a step change in performance, reducing or eliminating the need for financial support for the sector and improving its international competitiveness.

Charlotte Morton, ADBA’s Chief Executive, said: “The CCC has just published its Progress Report to Parliament , which highlights a huge gap between Government ambition and policy reality. The UK AD and biogas industry alone can make up 30% of shortfall required to meet the 5th Carbon Budget by 2030, including mitigating especially harmful methane emissions from organic wastes this decade.   However, it can only do so if the British Government acts now. Doing so would enable the Prime Minister to show the leadership we need as host of COP26 to encourage all other countries to follow suit.

We thank and congratulate the 48 signatories who have already come forward. ADBA will work with other industry stakeholders to encourage them to sign the Declaration and further demonstrate the industry’s full commitment to helping decarbonise the UK economy – especially across hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as transport, heat and agriculture – and achieve the UK’s climate change goals.

CGA June 2021 Market Recovery Monitor

The latest Market Recovery Monitor shows that around 25,000 licensed premises were still shut at the end of May 2021 and the delay to a complete reopening of hospitality puts a significant number of them at risk of permanent closure.

Some key take-outs of the report are:

  • 76.2% of Britain’s licensed sites were trading by the end of the month, with the number more than doubling from April’s total of 32.9% thanks to the return of inside service
  • Whilst more than nine in ten venues in segments including food pubs (91.9%), high street pubs (92.9%) and casual dining restaurants (93.9%) are now open, figures are much lower in sectors that rely on late-night trading like nightclubs (49.9%) and bars (72.9%)
  • With strict restrictions like distancing and table service in place, sales have been well below pre-COVID-19 levels in these segments in particular. The four-week delay to a full easing of trading restrictions in England until 19 July, with Scotland likely to follow a similar path, places many closed businesses in jeopardy of failure
  • 81.3% of city centre sites were open by the end of May, more than in suburban (75.4%) and rural (72.8%) areas
  • There was a significantly lower level of reopening by the end of May in Wales (69.8%) than in England (76.5%) and Scotland (77.6%)

Rules on safe use of automated vehicles on GB roads

This consultation sets out proposals to amend The Highway Code in order to create rules on the safe use of automated vehicles on Britain’s motorways.
The consultation is an outcome requirement of the August 2020 call for evidence on ensuring safe use of Automated Lane Keeping Systems.
Automated vehicle technology is set to play a major role in the transport revolution happening today across the UK, helping to improve transport across the nations by making everyday journeys safer, more flexible and more reliable. The UK’s open regulatory regime, world-class research base, and industry and government investment in automated vehicle technology, have made the UK one of the global
leaders in its development.
This consultation aims to ensure that the UK’s first steps towards the introduction of automation to the mass market are done so in a way that is safe, clear on driver responsibilities and supportive of innovation.
The UK has played a vital role in developing international regulations to support the introduction of increasing automation, in particular through Department for Transport’s (DfT’s) work at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The
ALKS regulation was endorsed in March 2020, starting the process to allow vehicles fitted with this technology to come to market. ALKS will be the first approved system designed to perform the dynamic driving task instead of the driver, under certain conditions. ALKS is an important first step towards the development of systems with higher levels of autonomy.
The ALKS regulation sets out the technical requirements for ALKS, but certain aspects of its use require further consideration at a national level.

Responses were sought from a wide range of respondents including academia, representative organisations, industry and the public. The closing date for comments was 28 May 2021.

Tired Driving Trend Revealed in New Research

Company car and van drivers are being urged not to drive for longer than two hours without taking a break, after new research revealed a worrying trend in tired driving.

The survey, from road safety organisation IAM RoadSmart, found that one-in-10 drivers had momentarily closed their eyes because they were so tired.

The same number (10%) of drivers also admitted that they had hit the rumble strip, while two-in-five (40%) had turned down the heating or rolled down the windows in order to stop them from being tired.

Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, said: “Fatigue behind the wheel is a very serious problem, perhaps more concerning than previously thought of.

“The potential carnage that could result from even one accident doesn’t bear thinking about.”

More than half of drivers said they were very concerned about fatigue when driving long distances, while encouragingly around a quarter of drivers had pulled over for a rest or a coffee as the road safety experts advise.

“Driving a long distance needs pre-planning to ensure there are plenty of available rest places and to make sure there’s enough time to complete the journey if delays are encountered,” explained Greig.

“Never drive for longer than two hours without a break and take particular care if driving when you would normally be asleep. This is even more important as the country reopens after the pandemic and not all facilities may be available yet.

“Drivers can then concentrate on staying alert behind the wheel rather than staving off tiredness by trying to reach their end destination without adequate rest breaks.”

“Starfrost’s desire to create the most efficient and sustainable cooling system runs in parallel with the intent of World Refrigeration Day and has led to the significant growth of the business. Our continued growth enables us to create new positions and expand capacity within the business for commissioning and administration roles. The commissioning role is paramount to achieving the optimum efficiency in terms of utility consumption, cooling capacity and operation impact, we hope to encourage more like minded people consider a career in the sector.”

With more than 15 million people employed in the refrigeration sector worldwide, this year’s theme will ensure World Refrigeration Day 2021 inspires the next generation of cooling champions in the form of designers, technician, sales, software developers, managers and consultants, encouraging them to meet the challenges faced in their communities.

The campaign also aims to inform and educate about the significant role the industry and its technology play in modern life and society with around 5 billion refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump systems currently in operation worldwide. Those systems provide the conditions required for health, comfort, worker productivity, manufacturing, and essential environments for food, pharmaceuticals, and digital data.

World Refrigeration Day will bring businesses together in dozens of countries for a series of refrigeration-related activities and events, promoted online and through social media.
