PRINCIPAL LOGISTICS TECHNOLOGIES ACQUIRES ERP AND WMS SOLUTIONS SPECIALIST BRENTECH DATA SYSTEMS

Warehouse and supply chain management software specialist Principal Logistics Technologies continues to bolster its growth plans during these challenging times with the acquisition of Dublin-based Brentech Data Systems. Principal Logistics Technologies has purchased the entire share capital of Brentech Data Systems which includes its intellectual property rights.

Peter Flanagan, Principal Logistics Technologies’ founder and managing director, commented “I am excited that our longstanding experience in deploying warehouse management software technology into the healthcare supply chain sector, as well as into a range of other sectors, will be increased by this strategic acquisition. I am also impressed with the power, scalability and functionality of Brentech’s AWARDS-BA³ technology platform, and by the fact that our mutual technologies utilise both the Progress OpenEdge and Microsoft .Net platforms and skillsets. This provides continued and assured customer support and also grows our already strong OpenEdge and .Net knowledge pool.”

Flanagan continued, “In-DEX WMS technology supports single-site operations, SME and multinationals with complex multi-site, end-to-end, supply chain operations across multiple industry sectors. AWARDS-BA³ offers complex sales and purchase order processing functionality needed by pharmaceutical and healthcare product distributors.  It also offers the capability of managing automated and robotics-based warehousing systems. We look forward to adding these products to our portfolio as well as enhancing our pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chain sector expertise. We are now a team of over 30 professionals delivering solutions to businesses across the UK, Ireland, Europe and Australasia.”

John Brennan, Brentech Data Systems founder commented, “We developed our blue-chip client base over many years and a key issue in considering the sale to Principal Logistics Technologies was the assurance of ongoing high levels of professional support to our valued customers. Additionally, we’ve a great team and we needed assurance that our highly-trained resources remained in place to support our customers. I’m comfortable in the knowledge that both our customers and team are in good hands.”

Luke Mooney of Duff & Phelps acted as financial advisor to Principal Logistics Technologies.  Lorcan Tiernan and Conor Keaveny of Dillon Eustace provided the company with legal advice. Tax advice was provided by Bernard Doherty of Grant Thornton. Financing was provided by The Firmament Group and Harwood Private Capital.

OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL DISTRESS LOAD CAPACITY INCREASED

Oakland International has deployed further resources for their distress load management (DLM) solution across their UK sites at Redditch, Corby, and Bardon.

BRC AA accredited and an EHO approved solution for same day or next day treatment of distress loads, the company typically recovers more than 85% of product and is trusted by major insurers who can attend and witness the distress load management process to verify exact waste and consignment recovery levels.

Oakland International’s Lee Whiting Chief Operating Officer commented: “By investing in a dedicated facility for distress load management, which incorporates a CCTV monitored rework area as well as dedicated multi-temperature chambers, means we can store work in progress and in quarantine product.

“Brand owners and insurers are quite rightly very aware of the potential risks associated with stowaways damaging or contaminating stock in transit, and the approach of simply throwing away the whole consignment and then seeking to claim off insurers was commonplace and resulted in an ever-increasing burden on insurers and hauliers with significant food waste, which otherwise would be fit for human consumption.”

Offering inspection and sorting of consignments where product safety is potentially challenged by stowaways or other contamination issues, Oakland International was the first DLM registered and recognised service which encompassed approved scientific methods for measuring surface contamination, working with, and treating damaged loads, metal contamination, shot loads, temperature abuse and pest contamination such as flies as part of its service offering.

With the onset of Covid-19 the company installed sanitising facilities which offer additional reassurances for brand owners and removes the potential for secondary risks of pandemic transfer via stock, with instant digital reports ensuring rapid information transfer flows to key stakeholders.

Lee added: “Commonly accepted risks of clandestine infiltration increase sharply when trucks are queuing or stationary near to the ports of loading. Delays in crossing times brought about by slower than normal border control checks and customs entries may result in increased numbers of clandestine activity, and with winter temperatures, the urge to use trucks rather than risk sea crossings is compelling.

“Offering a de-branding solution for brand owners allows stock to be re-distributed through to discount wholesale, foodservice and foodbanks so that good quality food does not go to waste.”

A total supply chain solutions specialist Oakland International offers contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution and is a brand development support provider for ambient, chilled, and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain. A double Queen’s Award for Enterprise recipient for International Trade and Sustainable Development, Oakland is working towards becoming the first carbon-neutral business within their sector.

XPO LOGISTICS TO PROVIDE LOGISTICS AND TRANSPORT OF DNANUDGE PORTABLE COVID-19 TEST KITS

XPO Logistics, a leading global provider of transport and logistics solutions, has been awarded a contract by DnaNudge Ltd to pack and deliver rapid, lab-free COVID-19 tests to National Health Service (NHS) distribution points, patient care homes and other healthcare facilities across the UK.

XPO will perform the services from its Amber Park site in Derbyshire, which has the required quality control systems in place. The DnaNudge polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for clinical use and has received the European CE mark for conformity with health, safety and environmental protection standards.

Professor Chris Toumazou, co-founder and CEO, DnaNudge, said, “XPO responded to our requirements with a highly reliable, customised solution that integrates logistics and transport with a single point of contact. This efficiency is essential, as demand for our lab-free COVID-19 PCR test has increased from an initial average of 100,000 per month to 1.5 million per month.”

Gavin Williams, managing director, supply chain – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said, “We thank DnaNudge for entrusting us with critical support for the NHS and other UK healthcare providers during COVID-19. We designed an agile, scalable solution that leverages our capabilities in the healthcare sector to meet DnaNudge’s specific needs.”

UPDATED GUIDANCE ON FOOD FACTORY HYGIENE HELPS MANUFACTURERS PRODUCE SAFE PRODUCTS

Campden BRI has updated guidance on the design, implementation and control of cleaning and disinfection of food factories. The revised version will help food and drink manufacturers ensure their factories are cleaned and disinfected effectively so that they maintain a high hygienic standard and continue to produce safe products.

It comes as a result of close collaboration with industry experts to align it with changes in the management of hygiene in food production ensuring it reflects the most up-to-date thinking, research and developments.

Phil Voysey, senior microbiologist at Campden BRI and editor of the updated guidelines, said:

“The coronavirus pandemic has seen factory cleaning prioritised like never before, but even prior to the public health crisis food businesses needed to comply with the EU regulations related to the hygiene of foodstuffs to remain in business. We’re excited to release this revised version because it is not only up to date with the relevant regulations but is also refreshed with recent developments in the area of factory hygiene, including new controls and cleaning chemical products.”

Food manufacturers, retailers and regulatory bodies prepared the new guidance in conjunction with Campden BRI scientists to provide a single source of information on cleaning and disinfecting a food factory. It will help the industry understand when to clean, how to clean and what chemicals to use to remove physical, chemical and microbiological contaminants. To achieve this, the comprehensive guideline covers a number of specific areas, including:

  • how to select the appropriate chemicals – based on differences in equipment, facilities and ingredients/foods being handled
  • how to eliminate the virus that causes COVID-19 from a factory environment
  • the various methods of cleaning and disinfection
  • the equipment needed to carry out effective cleaning
  • how to build cleaning schedules
  • the timing and frequency of cleaning, and
  • how to monitor factory cleanliness and verify that cleaning has been carried out successfully.

Voysey continued:

“Incorporating the combined experience of industry leaders into this single document provides food and drink manufacturers invaluable guidance at their fingertips. This includes the best approaches to dealing with cleaning particularly tricky areas including drains and floors, and how to avoid common hygiene mistakes.”

Campden BRI collaborated with a working party made up of the food industry to ensure the guideline document – Cleaning and disinfection of food factories: a practical guide (Second edition) 2020 – is relevant to manufacturers and covers many of the cleaning-related challenges that they will come across. The new guidance is now available from Campden BRI.

BFFF FROZEN FOOD REVIEW

We are just putting the finishing touches to our Frozen Food Review that will be published at the end of the month.

It is 5 years since the Federation last produced a comprehensive overview of the Industry. We had started to plan this before Covid-19 hit and it will be no surprise when members read the Review that the Pandemic and its ‘fall out’ is a large part of the Review.

It is our intention to produce this review each year, as it is an ideal way to keep the Industry at the forefront of the media, influencers and bloggers

In line with our Digital Strategy the report will only be available online.

We would like to thank all those members that have provided us with support and content for the review.

A special thanks also, firstly to NewCold for sponsoring the Review and then the Young Leaders Forum, many who have provided amazing content to help us produce such a comprehensive review.
