DAWN’S NEW CAMPAIGN CELEBRATES OUR NATION’S BAKERY HERITAGE

Celebrating the fantastic bakes and inspirational bakers from around the UK and Ireland is the theme of this year’s marketing focus from Dawn Foods.

The ‘Celebrating Our Nation’s Bakes’ campaign will take bakers on a sweet treats tour of the UK and Ireland, discovering traditional and more unusual recipes from England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Different ‘hero’ recipes featuring bakes, such as Empire Biscuits, Monmouth Pudding, Devon Apple Cake and Guinness Cake, all re-created using Dawn ingredients, will be unveiled on a specially created map on the Dawn website.  Throughout the year there will be opportunities for bakers to get involved with the campaign, sharing their own local recipes, and taking part in the social media conversation around each region’s bakes.

There will be prize draws for bakers to win bakery related prizes such as oven gloves, Baker’s Toolkits and other campaign themed items. One lucky baker will also have the chance to go on a UK road trip where they can sample some of our nation’s great bakes, as Dawn is also offering a voucher for a seven-day luxury holiday in a fully equipped motorhome as its top competition prize.

Students on the Bakery & Patisserie Technology degree course at University College Birmingham (UCB) will also be sharing bakery recipes from their home regions and how they can be re-imagined for the modern consumer. These may include making an item vegan, gluten free, reducing sugar or giving it a contemporary twist.

Jacqui Passmore, marketing manager UK and Ireland at Dawn Foods said:

“Reduced travelling brought about by the global pandemic has meant that many of us have had time to focus on what is around us, whether that’s the beautiful rolling countryside, vibrant cities, or the coast, and of course the food heritage that is embedded in our national identity. Traditional British bakery is making a big comeback as consumers take comfort in their own heritage and roots.

“Bakers, of course, have always been the bedrock of every community and we wanted to focus on the sweet bakes that are synonymous with different areas of the UK and Ireland. As well as showcasing recipes that bakers will be familiar with, we also wanted to give them new inspiration to try recipes they may not have heard of, and with the help of UCB bakery students, insight into how they can re-invent those bakes for the modern consumer.

“Also in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year, celebrating Our Nation’s Bakes couldn’t be more appropriate!”

ICELAND FOODS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION DONATES £150,000 TO BRITISH RED CROSS IN SUPPORT OF UKRAINE

Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation (IFCF) has donated £150,000 to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal to help with the Ukrainian relief efforts.

Ukraine has already endured almost eight years of conflict. The current escalation in fighting places millions of people in immediate danger. Efforts are urgently being put in place around the world to help the country’s population in Ukraine and the neighboring countries that people are fleeing to.

The Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are continuing to respond to existing and emerging humanitarian needs. Donations provided to the Red Cross can help those affected get food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter.

Richard Walker, Managing Director of Iceland, said;People are losing their homes and their lives. It is important to me, to the business and to our customers that we help those in Ukraine.

“Central and Eastern European countries such as Poland, where I lived and worked for many years, will face the full consequences of up to 4 million refugees, according to United Nations.

Through our foundation we have donated £150,000 to the British Red Cross. We stand with Ukraine.”

Mike Adamson, chief executive of the British Red Cross: The Red Cross is responding to the unfolding crisis in Ukraine. People are losing their homes and lives; families are being separated, people are fleeing the country.

Donations will help us reach displaced people in Ukraine and those fleeing to neighbouring countries with food, water, medicine, medical equipment and other essentials. We are hugely grateful for this donation from Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation.”

Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation has been in existence since 1973, always committed to raising funds for good causes. Our Iceland and The Food Warehouse colleagues are very passionate about raising funds for IFCF, and their efforts have made possible this donation to the British Red Cross to help those suffering in Ukraine.

URGENT SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE FROM THE UK & IRELAND FOOD & DRINK SECTOR

The world has united to condemn the actions of Russia. We have all seen and read about substantial migration of the population within Ukraine and into the neighbouring countries, especially Poland, which is putting pressure on food supply chain infrastructure, accommodation, transport etc.

We share a desire to support our European partners and are therefore assembling teams from the UK & Ireland to mobilise a fleet of initially 50 trucks to deliver much needed basic supplies of food and drink to the main border crossing points to Poland, in particular Dorohusk and Medyka.

We are now looking for partners to fill trucks with supplies of essential food and drink. We can deliver ambient, chilled and frozen consignments and we can collect from manufacturing sites or warehouses across the UK and Ireland.

Oakland International and Capital Transport will be orchestrating the logistical operation and we will be liaising with the Polish and Ukrainian embassies and Red Cross to agree on the best locations for food and drink dispersal. We do have a large number of Polish and Ukrainian drivers in the transport network who are of course well placed to assist.

How can you help? Please advise on what stock items and quantities (total pallets and approximate weight) that you are able to and prepared to donate.

If you have a full load of 26 standard pallets or 33 euro pallets, we can collect. Short shelf-life stock of under 7 days should be avoided – but let’s remember that we can be creative; bread and pastries and many other types of short shelf-life products can be frozen for transport to extend their shelf life.

If you have less than full loads, please consider talking to partners in your network to see if you can between you pull a load together. We are happy to send a driver to collect from up to three locations to fill a trailer.

Alternatively, you can deliver pallet quantities to our central consolidation sites at Redditch, Bardon, Corby or Dublin.

The Board of Oakland International has agreed to pay for the first 50 loads of stock to get to the borders and/or into Ukraine if we can get in. We know that this situation could be long-lasting but our efforts here are to assist with humanitarian support whilst the initial shock displacement is taking place.

We can move fast and would see your urgent support and commitments to enable us to start shipping stock from Wednesday this week.

SIX TOP TIPS TO AVOID MISLEADING ADVERTISING

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has highlighted that year on year, roughly 70% of the complains they receive related to misleading advertising. This proves that this is an issue that consumers take seriously and that all marketers should be mindful of.

ASA’s top tips to help you avoid the most common mistakes:

  1. Don’t omit key information

All relevant information, including significant conditions to an offer, should be made clear in the ad itself. These should be stated close, or clearly linked, to the main claim. Significant conditions will vary depending on the circumstances, and we have further guidance on Promotional Marketing if you’re looking for more detail.

  1. Make sure your pricing is clear

Pricing should relate to the product advertised, and include all non-optional charges (such as VAT and booking fees). We recently produced new guidance for secondary ticket providers and updated our guidance for the travel sector, and we have specific guidance for other sectors too, but the main principles apply across all sectors.  Also, don’t forget about delivery charges.

  1. Don’t exaggerate the capability or performance of a product

Advertising is all about presenting a product in the best possible light, but don’t over-claim in a way that’s likely to mislead.  Obvious exaggerations that the average consumer is unlikely to take literally (and that are unlikely to mislead) are allowed though.

  1. Ensure any qualifications are clear

Qualifying text (small print or footnotes) can be used to clarify a claim in an ad, but don’t use it to hide important information or in a way that misleadingly contradicts the headline claim. For example, it’s often contradictory to claim “X% Off Everything!*” and then qualify this with “*exclusions apply”.

  1. Have the evidence to back up your claims

Remember that before you run an ad, you should hold adequate evidence to support all objective claims or those that are capable of objective substantiation, bearing in mind the impression consumers are likely to take from the ad. The level of evidence that is required will depend on the type of claim being made and the product in question. For example, for some health, beauty or slimming claims robust clinical trials may be required.

  1. Be careful of claims in product names

OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL LAUNCHES OAKRA, THE 1ST FULLY REUSABLE RETURNABLE PACKAGING SOLUTION

Total supply chain solutions specialist Oakland International has launched a sustainable, fully reusable temperature-controlled packaging unit, for home and business direct delivery. The OakRA unit (Oakland Returnable Asset).

The purpose of the OakRA is to replace large quantities of waste packaging materials and insulate with a new way of sending goods that is stronger, safer and that remains in the economy to be reused indefinitely.

Oakland International Group Innovation Officer Lindsay Winser explained: “Throughout the pandemic Oakland issued over 15 million units direct to homes and it was whilst delivering this service we became aware of the shortcomings of packing in cardboard from a sustainability and practical point of view. We set out to develop a solution that was not just good enough to be recycled, but that would be wholly reusable and able to be fully tracked.”

After 2 years of development and testing different materials for their performance properties, the OakRA was born. Tooled and manufactured in the UK, the units provide significant impact resistance and excellent thermal insulation, whilst being lightweight and strong. The boxes are made secure with tamper evident banding and the water-resistant material makes them ideal for chilled, frozen or ambient produce.

Operating through an asset tracking portal with a unique RFID tag on each unit, the last whereabouts of each OakRA will be known, allowing Oakland and its clients to keep track of the assets and ensure they come back for reuse.

Operational trials have been a total success with positive feedback from both end users and carrier drivers, particularly on the strength, thermal performance, ease of handling and weather proofing, making them ideal for doorstep delivery. An additional significant advantage of a reusable packing solution is the potential impact on customer retention which will be a major influence for the brands signing up to the exclusive scheme.

Oakland is working closely with key customers on this innovative approach to reusable packaging and have a list of sustainably focused clients poised to deploy.

Added Lindsay: “With a substantial reduction in cardboard packaging for each unit used, the OakRA is a gamechanger, offering consumers a completely new experience for their food delivery with a closed loop solution and a simple collection process for the return.”

Oakland International operates 24-hours/7 days a week and is a D2C/B2C/B2B specialist in contract packing, storage, picking, food distribution and a brand development support provider for ambient, chilled and frozen food to the retail, convenience, discount, wholesale and food service markets in the UK, Ireland and via their partner in Spain.

UPDATE ON INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEATHS OF CRABS AND LOBSTERS IN THE NORTH EAST

A thorough investigation on the cause of death of crabs and lobsters that were washed up on the North East coast between October and December 2021 has been completed by Defra and partner agencies.

Following significant testing and modelling to rule out possible causes, they believe the deaths were potentially a result of a naturally occurring harmful algal bloom.

From evidence found during the investigation, it’s unlikely that chemical pollution, sewage or infectious aquatic animal diseases were the cause of the deaths. Follow up work in January 2022 by the Environment Agency has shown live healthy crabs present in the same area.

Evidence gathered by Government scientists and multiple agencies throughout this investigation will continue to be collated and studied. While this is no longer an active investigation, the agencies will continue to work with local fishers and remain on standby to respond if further events occur.

The in-depth investigation considered evidence from:

  • Surveys by an EA boat, Humber Guardian, and shore-based monitoring teams.
  • Traditional and innovative screening methods of samples of water, surface sediments, and crab which looked for over 1,000 potential chemical contaminants.
  • Follow up on any indicative chemical signals, including pyridine, involving further testing of water, sediment, blue mussels and crabs.
  • Washup events reported by the public and fishers.
  • An analysis of crab samples for signs of infectious disease and naturally occurring marine harmful algal toxins.
  • A review of environmental permits and industrial sites for evidence of abnormal discharges.
  • A review of licenced marine activity in the local area (or deemed licence).
  • Satellite imagery and phytoplankton samples.

While there is no food safety risk from eating crabs that have been caught in waters off the North East coast, it is unsafe to eat dead or dying crabs found on the affected coast.

The public are encouraged to continue report any incidents of concern to the EA helpline on 0800 80 70 60 and industry are encouraged to contact NE IFCA on 01482 393 515 or ne.ifca@eastriding.gov.uk.
