RESULTS OF THE GCA SURVEY

Mark White, who now heads up the Grocery Code Adjudicator, held a webinar on 29th July 2021.

Key highlights are they received a total of 2,598 responses to their survey this year, which was an increase of 60% over the survey held in 2020.

Of the companies, or organisations, completing the survey 29% reported code compliance issues, whilst the lowest since the survey has been run, it still means just under 30% of suppliers have issues.

Sainsbury’s was identified as the most compliant retailer achieving a score of 98%, closely followed by Aldi and Co-op on 97%.

Mark also highlighted that 8 retailers improved their net performance this year, which was 2 more than last year’s report.

The top three issues highlighted by those completing the survey were:

  • No compensation for poor forecasting errors/not preparing forecasts with due care.
  • Delay in payments.
  • Obligation to contribute to marketing costs.

Mark also highlighted that with most retailers reviewing range spacing this has led to concerns about how de-listings are notified and dealt with. There still remains concerns about respective financial audits.

STARFROST HELIX SPIRAL FREEZER DELIVERES ENERGY EFFICIENCY BENEFITS AT MACKIE’S OF SCOTLAND

Cooling equipment experts Starfrost partnered with Mackie’s of Scotland to install highly efficient freezing technology to improve and expand ice cream production at its real dairy farm in Aberdeenshire.

With an impressive and inspiring goal to become the most environmentally friendly company in the UK, Mackie’s of Scotland has invested £4.5 million in new technology and development of its dairy. The recent freezer replacement project from Starfrost forms part of the large scale green initiative implemented by Mackie’s of Scotland.

The Helix spiral freezer is a low carbon design that uses eco-friendly C02 as a refrigerant, which has no impact on global warming or ozone depletion in comparison to HCHC’s, and provides a reliable and future-proof solution for the dairy as CO2 is unaffected by HFC restrictions.

In addition to the energy efficiency benefits, the spiral freezer installed at Mackie’s has enhanced the quality of the ice cream produced at the dairy. Blind taste trials were conducted by Mackie’s own board of research developers, the team compared ice cream frozen by both the Starfrost Helix spiral freezer and the previously used freezing system. The Starfrost freezing system scooped up success in the trials with a unanimous vote based upon taste and texture of the ice cream.

Yzanne, Project Manager of Mackies of Scotland, talks about the freezer project and the benefits the Helix spiral freezer has made to production:

“We have been excited about implementing this innovative technology, we had a much needed requirement to increase freezing capacity of our ice cream to meet increasing demand and took the opportunity to explore equipment that would further improve processes within the dairy. The importance of consistent, rapid freezing is fundamental to the quality of frozen products, therefore the freezing system and the technology we selected was vital.”

“The new Starfrost system means that we now have the most efficient spiral freezer design combined with high performance freezing. The results are improved texture and consistency of Mackie’s of Scotland ice cream, as proven in our taste trial results.”

The Starfrost Helix spiral freezer has provided the dairy with energy efficient freezing technology that meets the ice cream producers long term plan while delivering product quality results. The energy saving design of spiral freezer allows Mackie’s production team to freeze at precisely correct temperatures and control the airflow of the system, using only required refrigeration and power.

The spiral freezer features a dual drum for maximum processing capacities and is designed to freeze over 40 2 litre tubs of ice cream per minute, with an ability to process varying sizes of product which provides Mackie’s with opportunities to develop and diversify production in the future.

NEW INTEGRATION PARTNERSHIP WITH SYNBIOTIX BRINGS ERUDUS FOOD DATA TO LEADING HEALTHCARE ORGANISATIONS

Synbiotix, a single solution facilities management platform covering Catering, Portering and domestic services has signed up as the latest Integration Partner on the Erudus roster.

Food data platform Erudus boasts some 46,000 product specification input directly by 900 Manufacturers and Suppliers, and will aid Synbiotix in their vision of a single source of supplier data for building catering management systems in the NHS.

Synbiotix, whose customers include NHS Bristol and NHS Glasgow & Clyde plan to link the Erudus platform to their MyDietetix nutritional analysis system. This system takes supplier information and uses recipes and menus to calculate available nutrition to patients in hospitals. The system is also used as the allergen data source for hospitals, supplying patients and visitors with up to date and reliable allergen data allowing them to make informed meal choices.

Mark Edell, Projects Director at Synbiotix says: “The ambition is to have one data platform for all suppliers meaning that any one client does not have to approach the suppliers to get data. The format of the data is often PDF or excel and any updates to the system take ages to manage. I am hoping that having one platform (Erudus) for all suppliers makes setting up the system easy and reduces the burden on the catering department to maintain the platform.”

Erudus COO Jon Shayler says: “Synbiotix is a fantastic fit for Erudus, a forward-thinking company who work with some of the UK’s biggest healthcare organisations – a sector which will benefit greatly from accessing our Data Pool.

Like us, Synbiotix pride themselves on technological advancement and innovative software, and the difference a partnership like this can make reinforces our commitment to ensuring accurate allergen and nutritional information is easily accessible to those who most need to see it. We welcome Synbiotix to Erudus and look forward to seeing the rewards of this integration.”

NATIONAL FOOD STRATEGY – WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES?

On 15th July 2021, Henry Dimbleby has published his long awaited review of what is needed to produce a sustainable and healthy national food strategy for England. Part 2 looks at the entire food chain, from farm to fork, examining how changing the way food is produced and sold in England can help address our health problems, including obesity, and protect the environment.

Calling on ministers to “break the cycle” of a diet he claims is dominated by junk food and excess meat consumption, Part 2 makes no fewer than 14 recommendations.

Dimbleby recommends new taxes on wholesale salt and sugar to encourage reformulation (£3 per kilogram of sugar and £6 per kilogram of salt); and he urges the Government to spend at least part of the revenue raised from these measures on policies to promote health, including making fruit and vegetables more available to people on low incomes.

The report also proposes that we should eat 30% less meat by 2032.  It suggests conventional meat could be replaced by “cell-cultured” meat and says that Ministers should invest in research into novel proteins and meat substitutes, including insects and fermented microbes such as algae.  The report recommends more investment in sustainable farming techniques and calls on the Government to protect UK food and animal welfare standards in new trade deals with countries such as the USA and Brazil.

The report also recognises the importance of food education. It calls for a new “Eat and Learn” initiative for all children aged 3–18 and the re-instatement of an A-level in food. In a measure unlikely to be welcomed by the food industry, it also recommends mandatory reporting for large food companies, which it says should publish annual sales reports by food type in both revenue and volume terms, thus revealing the significance of their sales of “unhealthy” food products. The report argues that this would encourage food reformulation, the provision of more healthy options and improve the marketing of healthy products.  Mr Dimbleby also wants the Government to strengthen the Government’s public sector food procurement guidelines to ensure that taxpayer money is spent on healthy and sustainable food.  Defending his recommendations, Henry Dimbleby said that many food industry leaders had told him privately that they would welcome interventions that created a level playing field while enabling them to produce healthier products, so that they could contribute to ending the “junk food cycle”.
